Joy Church Needs Your Help!

Joy is looking for a small group of people interested in and with the skills to archive and digitize the history of Joy!  We have the information in boxes and books and needs it to be combined and digitally archived for generations to come.  If you are interested in helping with this very important project, please contact the Church Office or Pastor Steve.  Thank You!

Time to Register for the WELCA Triennail Gathering!

The Women of the ELCA Triennial Gathering will soon be here!  It will be held July 13-16 at the Minneapolis Convention Center.  Women of the church won't want to miss this special gathering so plan to register SOON.  The deadline for ONLINE registrations is July 12, 2017.  Cost to attend all days of the Gathering is $350.  Day registrations will be accepted on-site at the Registration Desk once the Gathering has begun.  Day registrations for either Friday or Saturday, July 14 or 15 are $175 or 12 cents a minute!   Registration by mail has closed.

One day registration gives you plenary sessions, including music and speakers, workshops and servant events, and full access to all the exhibitors and vendors.  It also offers you fellowship with 2500-3000 other women of faith.

Every day of the Gathering is packed with the following opportunities:
  • Bible Study, exploring the "All Anew" convention theme
  • Choice of 14 workshops with topics ranging from Sabbath-keeping to ending human trafficking, from facing shame to building cultural competency
  • Servant Events where Gathering participants can gather and sort in-kind gifts for agencies in the Twin Cities area that reach out to help people or make quilt kits or hygiene kits or choose from other hands-on projects that will benefit agencies of the church
  • Worship opportunities with the opening worship being led by ELCA Presiding Bishop, Elizabeth Eaton
  • Huge room full of displays of every kind imaginable with full access to all the exhibitors and vendors
  • Selected films, including Emmy winning "Beauty of Their Dreams" with its message that girls plus education equals increased economic growth, improved well-being of women and extended life span

In addition to these opportunities, the Gathering has secured the following speakers to enlighten participants:
  • Leymah Gbowee, Nobel Prize winner and peace activist from Liberia, Africa who assembled thousands of women who prayed in the streets of Liberia, putting an end to the Liberian Civil War of 2003
  • The Rev. Alexia Salvatierra, an ELCA pastor anda national leader in the areas of poverty and immigration.  She will reflect on a session of the Bible study that emphasizes the Bible is filled with people who challenged unjust systems.   She will examine systems that we should challenge and outline the counter-cultural, justice-making actions we are being called to take.
  • Kelly Fryer, a pastor, teacher, author, entrepreneur, and communicator who will explore the "All Anew" Triennial theme in the Bible Study she wrote for the Triennial Gathering.  She is the Executive Director of the YWCA in southern Arizona and works in the areas of women's health, gender equity, ending human trafficking, racial justice and poverty.
  • Brenda Myers-Powell, co-founder and director of the Dreamcatcher Foundation. She is a survivor of sexual abuse, drugs, and prostitution.  Her passion is to help young women avoid the trauma she faced for 25 years as an abused teenager and prostitute.
Place article copy here. Be sure to make the articles short and concise as people tend not to read much more than a couple of paragraphs.

Please note that our JWELCA will give some monetary help to those women from Joy who will be attending the Triennial Gathering.  Please let Marcia Lindseth know if you will be attending this special Gathering of sisters from all across the USA.  Visit www.welcatg.org to learn more or consult the Triennial Gathering bulletin board in the narthex hallway!

Help with in-kind gifts  and hand warmers

All women of Joy are invited to join our ecumenical sisters from the other churches in Prescott for Joy's Annual Summer Bible Study Retreat.

This year it will be held on Wednesday, August 2 from 8:30 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. in the Joy Lutheran Church Fireside Room.  This year's Bible study is called "All Anew: Ready or Not."   It is written by Kelly Fryer, a pastor, teacher, entrepreneur and communicator.  She has taught leadership at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN and co-founded A Renewal Enterprise, a national firm that helps values-based organizations work more effectively.  Currently, Kelly serves as the executive director of the YWCA in southern Arizona. The Bible studies will focus on renewal in our churches, communities, society, and our own lives.  Three women from Joy Lutheran will lead the three sessions. The sessions for the morning study are as follows:
Session one is "Say Goodbye to Nice." Nice is not the same as good.  Making nice is what you do to avoid upsetting people.  But Good knows there are more important things than your reputation, your balance sheet and whatever else it is you count on to make you comfortable.  Good does what matters.
Session two is "Stand with the Least of These."  God requires of those who live in privilege and comfort to recognize what God is up to and join in.  God is on a mission to love, bless and save the world.  If we are going to be a part of that mission, here is where it begins: Among he poor and those who have been displaced and disenfranchised.
Session three is "Upend the Tables." What is our responsibility when the very systems that have been put in place to protect people and make sure justice is done become tools to oppress?  Do we just stand by and allow injustice to continue?
Bring a friend.  Hope to see you there!

Help Collect In-Kind Gifts for the Tenth Triennial WELCA Gathering

The Women of the ELCA's Tenth Triennial Gathering will be held July 13-16, 2017 in Minneapolis.  We are praying that many women from our church will be able to attend this inspiring Gathering.  Check out the bulletin board in the narthex hallway for information on registration, speakers, workshops, tours, worship opportunities, and servant events.  The Gathering theme, All Anew, calls us to look at life in a new way.  Our Women of the ELCA purpose statement calls us to be there for each other.  God call us to make a difference in the world.   Through in-kind gifts, we can do it all:   We can see into the lives of our gift recipients in Minneapolis and around the world.  We can be there for them in relationship and in partnership, and we can make a difference in the world.   Our JWELCA would like to invite our Joy congregation to get involved with us as we make/collect the in-kind gifts we will take to the Gathering this summer.  The recipients of these gifts will be agencies and partners in Minneapolis and also oversees.

The In-Kind Gifts we will be collecting include the following:
  • Quilt Kits (See directions for making these on flier on table in narthex)
  • Gift Cards (to Target, Walmart, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, Visa)
           - $10 minimum - give to Emilie Horken
  • Hygiene Items (see list below - deposit in box in narthex)
  • Clothing (Socks and Underwear in every size and color; white T-shirts for
women, children, men - deposit in box in narthex)
Please use the box in the narthex to deposit In-Kind gifts for the WELCA Triennial Gathering.  We are collecting the following items:  Ethnic hair products, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, bar soap, razors, and skin lotion for women, children, teens and men.  Also needed are hand soap, toothbrushes, feminine hygiene items, towel sets (bath, hand washcloth), baby wipes and diapers in all sizes. Please deposit clothing items, also, in the box.  Following clothing items are needed:  white T-shirts for women, children, teens and men and socks and underwear in every size and color.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP IN THIS IMPORTANT MISSION OUTREACH!

People Needed to Make Pairs of Hand-Warmers for the WELCA Triennial Gatherin g
At every Triennial Gathering of the Women of the ELCA, women attending from the various Synods hand out a "token" gift to new friends at the Triennial.  The Synod Women's Board of Northwest Wisconsin is asking for people to make these hand-warmers as gifts.  Many are needed so if you can help with this project, please note the direction sheets on the table in the narthex or on the Triennial Gathering bulletin board in the narthex hallway and make some hand-warmers that we can distribute at the Triennial Gathering in July.  If you have questions about this project, contact Marcia Lindseth or Emilie Horken.  Thanks for your help!

Church Directory

The directories (both picture and address) are ready to pick up...they are also available on the church web page on a password protected page (please call the office for the password).
If you have corrections please let the office know.

Name Tag s... are a great way to help people remember your name.  We are working on a system to have more permanent name tags available, but for now any time you can wear one helps the rest of us get to know you. Thank you.

Church-to-Go

The church is not a building, it is the people of God,
wherever they are.  For many of us, our lives are more mobile and family commitments may find us traveling on the weekend. So we have collected some resources to help you worship and be the church where you find yourself.

If you have access to WiFi the lots of resources available at your fingertips.  If you are trying to unplug and get away from electronics you just need to prepare a bit ahead of time to print some resources.
One size does not fit all.  If will be different if you have young kids or are on your own, so use what is helpful and adapt.  Worship doesn't have to be an hour on a Sunday morning, it can happen when you are gathered around a meal table, or around a campfire at the end of the day, but a few minutes of focused attention can make a big difference.

Pastor Steve's  Church-to-Go Podcast (still under development)
Click here for a short worship guide (will be available by Sunday)...they are themed but not linked to any particular day or order, use them as you find helpful.

How are we doing financially?

We have had a very generous response to our capital appeal which exceeded our goal of $30,000 in just a few weeks. Thank you. Thank you.  Unfortunately our giving for our general, day to day operating of our ministry has not been able to keep up with the challenging budget we set for ourselves.  Since the beginning of the year we have had about $1000 more expense than income each month, which is starting to add up.  If each of us do a little we can meet the need.  If you are on the go this summer and not able to be with us, remember we still need your support. Thank you.

If you would like to give electronically you can do so through our web page
