Congratulations - and thank you to all! Pictured below are Metro North ABE volunteers, including three of our MLC awardees who were recognized at our Journeys Reading Event.
Journeys Reading Event
Thursday morning, May 25, 18 adul t learners from Metro North Adult Basic Education's (ABE) participated in the first Journeys Reading event at Blaine Le arning Lab. With standing room only Metro North ABE te ach ers, students, volunteers and c ommunity members gathered to listen to
learners read their original stories, many of which are featured in "Journeys: An Anthology of Adult Student Writing".

"Journeys: An Anthology of Adult Student Writing" is produced by the Minnesota Literacy Counc il (MLC). Since 2007, the published book has included selected short stories, essays, poems and artwork cre ated by ABE students from across Minnesota.

Each year the MLC also hosts a large reading event where students are invited to read their piece at the Loft Literary Center. This is a great honor for our students to have their work fo rmally recognized and the opportuni ty to share their personal stories and experiences in such a brave way. Our students have said they really love the big event with so many people from across the state. Six student authors from our Columbia Heights site traveled to the Loft this year to participate in the event.
While students are invited to attend th e eve nt hosted by the MLC, this year Metro North ABE received a MLC grant to host its own Journeys event. Our first event received wonderful feedback from staff, students, volunteers and other community members who came to listen to the students' stories. We are looking forward to more events like this.
2017 Metro North ABE Graduation
Metro North ABE hosted its 2017 Graduation Ceremony at Anoka High School on Thursday, June 8, 2017. All Metro North ABE students who earned their GED, State Diploma or Credit Recovery Diploma in the past year were invited to participate.

Keynote speakers Al Ickler, Anoka-Hennepin School District Community Education Director and Darcy Hokkanen, Program Coordinator at Anoka County delivered words of inspiration to the 34 graduate participants. Five student speakers from 3 different sites took to the podium and spoke about how Adult Basic Education has positively impacted their lives. After the ceremony the graduates along with their family and friends, Metro North ABE staff, volunteers, and community members enjoyed a festive reception with cake, lemonade, pictures, and many heartfelt words of congratulations.
