Love Story Featured in National Video
The story of two  residents of  Heritage  Woods of South Elgin, an affordable assisted living and memory care community managed by Gardant, is featured in a video designed  to encourage lawmakers to protect Medicaid funding for frail older adults.
 
The video was produced by the American Healthcare Association and National Center for Assisted Living. It highlights the  benefits of a Medicaid-waiver program in Illinois called Supportive Living. Through the program, Chuck and Cathy are able to receive the help and assistance they need and continue to see each other every day after more than 60 years of marriage.
 
We encourage you to share the video with your federal and state senators and representatives.
 
Advocating on Capitol Hill
Gardant CEO Rod Burkett joined more than 450 long-term care advocates on Capitol Hill earlier this month to discuss assisted living and nursing home legislative priorities and issues with members of Congress.
 
Gardant Dominates Illinois Wii Bowling and Spelling Bee Competition
Teams of residents from Gardant managed communities dominated the Affordable Assisted Living Coalition's 2017 Illinois statewide Wii Bowling and Spelling Bee championships, taking three out of the four top spots in both events.
 
Spelling Bee:
First Place
The Spelling Bees from Prairie Living at Chautauqua in Carbondale took home top honors. Team members were Ann DeHorn, Mike Kondzella, Elizabeth Schmidt and Janice Spain.
 
Second Place
The Deer Path Stingers from the Deer Path of Huntley affordable assisted living community for adults 22 to 64 with physical disabilities brought home the Second Place trophy and medals. Team members were P.J. Brosmith, Robin Lapins and Karin Schmidt. Deer Path also took home the trophy for having the best team name.
 
Fourth Place
Spellbrate from St. Anthony of Lansing celebrated a 4th Place finish. Mary Anne McIntosh represented St. Anthony in the competition.

 
Wii Bowling:
Second Place
The Fab 5 from Heritage Woods of Batavia brought back the Second Place trophy and medals. Team members were Mary Jane Berry, Jim Gent, Shirley Herman, Carole Martinak and Jerry Wall.
 
Third Place
Finishing in Third Place were the Woodsmen Plus from Heritage Woods of Charleston. Team members were Burleigh Hocking, John Honn and Judy Miller.
 
Fourth Place
Going home with the 4th Place Trophy were the Prairie Pin Heads from Prairie Living at Chautauqua in Carbondale. Team members were Carol Beigler, Dee Ebersohl, Marilyn Klingemann, Arlene Lewis and Cynthia Parkinson.

 
The semi-finals and finals were held May 31 and June 1 in Springfield, Illinois.
 
Older Adults & the Tech Revolution
Technology such as virtually reality and sensors in medications are helping to improve the aging experience for older adults and family caregivers, says a report posted on the Kiplinger website.
 
Minooka Ribbon Cutting
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held earlier this month to mark the completion of construction of Heritage Woods of Minooka, an affordable assisted living community that Gardant is managing. The three-story building in Minooka, Illinois features 101 private studio and one-bedroom apartments.
 
The community is certified to operate through the Illinois Supportive Living program so it can serve adults 65 and older of virtually all incomes, including individuals who are on or who qualify for Medicaid.

 
Ground Broken for Community in Kokomo, Indiana
A ground breaking ceremony was conducted earlier this month for Silver Birch of Kokomo, an affordable assisted living community that Gardant will be managing in Kokomo, Indiana.
 
The community, which is being developed by Vermilion Development of Chicago, will feature 119 private studio and one-bedroom apartments for older adults who need some help to maintain their independence. It is expected to open for occupancy mid-2018.
 
Silver Birch of Hammond Opens for Occupancy
Vermilion's Silver Birch of Hammond affordable assisted living community has opened for occupancy with Gardant as the management company.  The four-story building features 125 private apartments.
 
Getting Smarter about Getting Older
Older adults who refuse home health care services that are needed after being in the hospital are twice as likely to be readmitted to the hospital within 60 days, says a Navigating Aging report by Judith Graham that was posted June 15 on the KHN Kaiser Health News website.
 
Marketing Office Opens for St. Cloud Community
The marketing office for an affordable assisted living and memory care community that Gardant will manage in St. Cloud, Minnesota, has opened and reservations are being accepted.
 
The Sanctuary at St. Cloud will be located on 20th Ave. SE and is scheduled to open for occupancy this fall. The temporary marketing office is located at 525 Highway 10 South. For more information, stop in to the office, call 320-252-6325 or visit their website.
 
Elder Abuse Awareness
June 15 was World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Elder abuse has serious costs for both the individual who is abused and for society. A new study supported by the World Health Organization estimates that elder abuse is on the rise, with approximately one in six older adults being victims. Psychological and financial abuse were cited as the most common forms of abuse.
 
Poor Diet and Alzheimer's
A new study by researchers at the University of Southern California indicates that a diet high in cholesterol, fat and sugar may fuel the development of Alzheimer's among individuals who carry a gene associated with the disease.
 
Alzheimer's and Your Brain
In a recently posted TED Talk video, neuroscientist and author of "Still Grace" Lisa Genova talks about what you can do to prevent Alzheimer's disease.
 
Next Great Challenge for Senior Living
Rick Banas of Gardant was a panelist for a discussion of "Solving the Industry's Next Great Challenge: Building and Operating Middle Income Seniors Housing" at the 3rd Annual Interface Seniors Housing Midwest" conference held June 7 in Chicago.

Aspirin and Bleeding Risk for Older Adults
Daily aspirin use by adults 75 years of age and older can elevate bleeding risks, according to a study of individuals in the United States and Europe. Rather than discontinuing aspirin use, researchers cited in the story posted on the Reuters Science and Health website on June 13 recommend taking a heartburn drug.
 
Chronic Illness among Centenarians
A new study by researchers at George Washington University indicates that centenarians in the United States are often healthier than older adults in their 80s and 90s. Centenarians have lower rates of chronic illness, notes the report posted on the National Institute of Health Medline Plus website.

Celebrating 10 Years of Service
The Heritage Woods of Mt. Vernon affordable assisted lifestyle community held a 10th Anniversary Celebration earlier this month.

Specially honored were Reve Riley, who has been a resident of the community for the past 10 years, and Vickie Laird, a housekeeper, and Gayla Warren, CNA, who have served as staff members since the community opened for occupancy in June 2007.
