TMS Annual Meeting Program Complete
|
 The Masonry Society will hold its
2017 Annual Meeting and 40th Anniversary celebration in beautiful La Jolla, California on November 3-7. The meetings will feature committee meetings, technical sessions, and plenty of social activities.
Come celebrate our ruby anniversary with us! We will share highlights and stories from our 40 years as a Society at a very special Awards Luncheon on Saturday, November 4th. A commemorative edition of the Awards Lunch program will be developed. If you are interested in placing an advertisement or message in the program, please contact TMS Staff at [email protected].

Special Inspection Seminar planned prior to TMS Annual Meeting
|
 The Masonry Society (TMS) with the support of the Concrete Masonry Association of California and Nevada (CMACN), and the Masonry Institute of America (MIA) is offerrrig a comprehensive course aimed at helping inspectors, testing technicians, engineers, and building officials identify and verify key quality assurance items on the jobsite.
Attendees will learn code inspection requirements, proper placement of materials, mortar and grout, how to determine the compressive strength of masonry and appropriate severe weather procedures. This is an excellent course for those preparing for the ICC/TMS Structural Masonry Special Inspectors Certification Examination or to accumulate ICC Preferred Provider CEU's for renewal certification.

Masonry Giants Research Honoring M.J. Nigel Priestley during TMS Annual Meeting
|
The Research Committee of The Masonry Society is hosting a special Technical Session on Sunday, November 5, 2017 from 12:00 to 3:00 PM to honor Dr. M.J. Nigel Priestley, Emeritus Professor of Structural Engineering at the University of California at San Diego for his significant and lasting contribution to masonry research. Dr. Priestley's research focused on the seismic design of concrete and masonry structures, and on seismic design philosophy. He is credited with developing the first method for displacement-based design, an approach that has been described as revolutionary. His work on the modeling of fundamental masonry characteristics, such as the stress-strain relation, and the enhancement of fundamental masonry properties, such as confinement in compression regions, is regularly cited by masonry researchers worldwide.
During this Technical Session, members of TMS's Research Committee and invited speakers will review a variety of masonry topics in honor of Dr. Priestley' contributions to masonry research. Watch TMS's Website for more information on this session.

Canadian Masonry Symposium Report

 Thanks to the efforts of the organizers, sponsors, authors, and volunteers, the 13th Canadian Masonry Symposium (CMS), which was held in beautiful Halifax, Nova Scotia, was hugely successful publishing more than 100 papers on a variety of masonry topics. Information of the Symposium is posted

2nd Thursday Webinar Series Starts in October

The Masonry Society (TMS) is developing a series of webinars that will be presented on the 2nd Thursday of each month, starting on October 12, 2017. Topics and speakers are shown below. Public Comment Period expected for TMS 403, Direct Design Standard
|
The Design Practices Committee has completed balloting revisions to a completely updated TMS 403 Direct Design Handbook for Masonry Structures, submitting it to the Technical Activities Committee for review. Based on the results of that review, it is likely that the public comment period for the standard will open later this summer. Watch TMS's website for details.

resource authored by Jennifer Tanner and Richard Klingner covers the design of masonry structures using the 2015 International Building Code, the ASCE 7-10 loading standard, and the TMS 402-13 and TMS 602-13 design and construction standards. The latest advances, materials, and techniques are clearly explained. Chapter-long case studies featuring a low-rise building with reinforced concrete masonry and a four-story building with clay masonry illustrate the topics presented.

Volunteers Needed for Scanning Project

The Masonry Society is seeking volunteers to scan photographs and then to name the electronic images. Unfortunately, photographs are of a variety of shapes and sizes, and are "grouped" by event, and thus cannot easily be "mass" scanned. As such, each will have to scanned by hand. If you have the time to help TMS out with all, or a portion, of this scanning project,

A. Rhett Whitlock, President of WDP & Associates Consulting Engineers, Inc. received an Award of Merit from ASTM International's committee on Manufactured Masonry Units (C15). This prestigious award, which includes the accompanying title of fellow, is ASTM's highest recognition for individual contributions to developing standards. The committee is honoring Whitlock for his exceptional dedication to preparing standards that are related to the manufacturing of masonry units. He has been a member of ASTM since 1985, having previously won the Alan H. Yorkdale Memorial Award (1997). Whitlock is a active member of The Masonry Society, serving as an author on the Masonry Designer's Guide, and formerly serving on the Board of Directors.
