What we make of our talents is our gift back to God."

Meanwhile...in June

We teamed with the Community Music Center of Houston for our second annual "Legacy Project," recognizing contributors to the Black Music Experience with an opening reception and performance by the CMCH Ensemble.  During the reception  Betty Parker, a violinist with the Scott Joplin Chamber Orchestra and retired music educator, was honored.  Featured artists for the June exhibition  were  Shawn Artis, Mack L. Bishop II, Dominic Clay, Carolyn Crump, Leonard Freeman, Alton Shelvin and Charles Washington.

Deniz "dee! colonize" Lopez, writer, editor and poet, read from and signed her book "dee!collection, the complete layers.   The book is a poetic compilation of the political, cultural and spiritual aspects of life from 2005 to the present through the eyes of an evolving Tejas-born Xicana woman.  The poems explore the development of Lopez's ideology through non-fiction poetry and prose pieces, footnotes and even the messages in between the lines to reach the reader.

Leslie Abrams introduced children from the Sehah Youth & Fitness Center to the world of art during the Black Music Month exhibition.

Char Lockett, left, here with  Michelle Barnes, was The Collective's featured artist at the Texas Black Expo at the George R. Brown Convention Center.
