SERVICE

Sunday, June 25, 10:00 AM  "Talking the Walk: Why Do We Do What We Do?" Rev. Dick Gilbert

We are often admonished to "walk our talk," to live out our values. However, we seldom are urged to be able to "talk our walk," to tease out the theological rationale for what we do. "Practice what you preach and preach what you practice."

Dick Gilbert has been a Unitarian Universalist minister since 1961, retiring in 2005. He has published books on faith development, social justice and meditations, including In the Holy Quiet and Thanks Be for These. Dick has served congregations in Cleveland, Ithaca, Golden, CO and Rochester, NY. He lives with his wife Joyce in Rochester where they enjoy time with their three grandchildren.

Summer Meet Ups in Washington Park
This Sunday, June 25, is the first RE Council sponsored Summer Meet Up in Washington Park. This is a chance for you to join Albany UU families and other adults to picnic and play in Washington Park after the service, at about 11:30.

Bring your own lunch, chairs, blankets and your favorite lawn games. We'll meet near the playground. Elizabeth Baldes is sponsoring this week's Meet Up. Dates for other Meet Ups are July 9 and August 13.

Resist and Rejoice: Report from General Assembly in New Orleans

Opening the first full day of General Assembly, the three interim co-presidents of the Unitarian Universalist Association talked about "setting the table for the future of our faith."

Dr. Leon Spencer called on us to restructure the Welcome Table in a way that is not built on white supremacy culture. Bill Sinkford reminded us of the struggle for many to commit to Unitarian Universalism, not because of the promise of our theology, but because of the practice of our faith. Sofia Betancourt invited us to consider the heart of Unitarian Universalism. How can we carry it forward in a way that impacts the world?

More than 4000 registrants representing 604 congregations have gathered here in New Orleans to consider these questions and more. Rev. Sam, Leah Purcell, Tom Chulak, Dick Dana, Jean Poppei, Matt Schultz, John Sherman, Peggy Sherman, and Jacqui Williams are here representing Albany UU, while Kathy Harris is participating from Albany. Stay tuned for more of our reports!
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS

Sorrows
Reverend Joan Kahn Schneider, minister at Albany UU from 1989 to 1996,  died last Sunday, June 18, in Hendersonville, NC.

We also learned this week of the death of Claire Cooper Mayer, mother of Rev. Lynn Ashley.

Pledge year alert!
As our church fiscal year (2016-17) winds to a close (June 30, to be exact) this is a good time to remind everyone to write on your checks which pledge year you are contributing to. Some folks have already started paying on their 2017-18 pledge, some still are on 2016-17. Please, please write 'Pledge' and the fiscal year you're paying toward on the memo line.

Lost anything this year?
You might try looking in the coatroom, especially on the Lost and Found shelf. Of special note is a large collection of travel mugs...

As has been our practice the last few years, we will give all remaining items to Grassroots Givers. Grab your goods before July 1!
Photos wanted: UUs in social action
Share your activism by sending photos of yourself and other UUs at social justice events. Send photos to [email protected] . Be sure to include what event you're attending, where it is, a brief description and who is in the picture, if appropriate. We will then post them to our Face Book page or other social media. Thank you!
Sunday morning volunteers - still needed for Summer Services
Part of what makes our Sunday morning services so organized and enjoyable is our volunteers! You can volunteer for any Sunday as far in advance as you would like by visiting SignUp.com . Check it out, we couldn't do it without you!

Green Sanctuary reminders:

Time to trade in that old gas-guzzler? Buying a new electric or hybrid car can help end humanity's centuries-long love affair with fossil fuels. Your purchase, as a trend-setter and early adopter, will help fund further development of the electric vehicle technology. This will make future electric cars less expensive, and force communities to install more charging stations. Drive on pure sunshine power.
-Chris Bystroff

Do you have green recommendations that you would like to submit for possible inclusion in this summer's weekly Preview? Please e-mail them to Betsy Wright at:  [email protected]. With your approval, we will include your name. Also, don't hesitate to tell us as you complete various pledge items.
