CAWG Issues Statement on Pierce's Disease Control Program Spending
In last week's issue, we reported on the successful efforts to secure $5 million in funding for the Pierce's Disease Control Program. Earlier this week, CAWG issued an official statement, which was distributed to numerous media outlets.

Napa Farmworker Housing Receives Funding
Farmworker housing is getting some attention at the state Capitol. Gov. Jerry Brown's 2017-18 state budget included $250,000 for Napa County to help fund its farmworker housing centers. In addition, Assemblywoman Cecilia Aguiar-Curry (D-Winters) is pushing
AB 317
, a bill that would secure ongoing funding of $250,000 annually to support the centers. AB 317
would ensure that the county's farmworkers can continue to have access to safe and reliable housing. "These centers meet a critical housing need for the entire agricultural region," Aguiar-Curry said. "The general lack of affordable housing has only enhanced the need for these centers."

U.S. Senate Ag Committee Approves Pesticide Registration Legislation
The Senate Agriculture Committee on June 29 unanimously approved
H.R. 1029 (Pesticide Registration Enhancement Act)
. The act "
amends the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act to improve pesticide registration and other activities under the Act, to extend and modify fee authorities, and for other purposes
."
It essentially extends a program of fee collection to support pesticide registration programs at EPA. The bill has broad support among the agriculture community, crop protection companies and other groups.
"This historically noncontroversial, bipartisan legislation is vitally important to both the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, as well as farmers and farmworkers,"
Sens. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) and Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) said.
"Not only does this legislation provide certainty to the pesticide industry, but it also provides new products to farmers for crop protection and to consumers to protect public health."

Farm Bill Hearing to Focus on Specialty Crop Production
The House Agriculture Committee has scheduled a full committee hearing next week on technology and innovation in specialty crops. Chairman Mike Conaway said,
"Specialty crop production is a pivotal and growing sector of our agriculture industry. As we look at the farm bill through the lens of the current farm economy, innovation and technology will remain essential for farmers and ranchers to continue producing more food and fiber with fewer resources."

Agro-Terrorism Bill Signed by Trump
President Trump last week signed into law
H.R. 1238
- the "Securing our Agriculture and Food Act" - after passing through the U.S. House and Senate with bipartisan support. The legislation requires the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to carry out a program to coordinate DHS efforts related to defending the food, agriculture and veterinary systems of the U.S. against terrorism and other threats that pose a high risk to homeland security.

Presentation: Costs Related to Sustainability
In a yearlong project, the University of California Agricultural Issues Center (AIC) worked with CAWG and Wine Institute to evaluate the costs associated with increasing in sustainability. Graduate student Alicia Hoepfner presented the findings by four UC researchers last month at the Sustainable Winegrowing Workshop for Agricultural Professionals. "California Code for Sustainable Winegrape Growing - A Cost Evaluation" briefly highlights farm labor costs, economies of scale, owner-operator costs and other items.

Academy of Wine Business Research Conference and Education Summit
The Wine Business Institute (WBI) at Sonoma State University is hosting the Academy of Wine Business Research (AWBR) conference July 25-28. AWBR is an international society of academics and scholars who focus their research on economic, social and management issues related to the global wine industry.
The Wine Business Education Summit will assess industry needs related to education, hiring and employee retention. The half-day summit features executive directors from California wine and grower associations and human resources executives from the wine industry.
