Be Prepared for Hazardous Weather
Year-Round
James Taylor could have been writing about the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA's) National Weather Service (NWS) when he wrote, "Winter, spring, summer, or fall, all you got to do is call..." NWS wants you to be prepared for hazardous weather year-round and they've replaced their national safety awareness weeks with a year-round approach because bad weather can happen anytime
-----winter, spring, summer, or fall! The aim of the
National Seasonal Safety Campaign is to build a Weather-Ready Nation (WRN), one that is prepared for extreme weather, water, and climate events. Each campaign includes seasonal resources and materials that include articles, social media plans, infographics, presentations, videos, and other content around the weather hazards most common during the current season.
The NWS National Seasonal Safety Campaigns are:
- Winter Safety: Includes information on such weather events as floods, wind, space weather, fog, cold, avalanches, ice storms, and black ice. There are also educational materials on winter driving, injuries and fatalities, winter and pets, hypothermia, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration preparedness and response.
- Spring Safety: Learn more about rip currents, thunderstorms, tornados, tsunamis, lightning, heat, and floods. With spring breaks occurring now and in the near future, college and university personnel may want to review and share spring break safety messages.
- National Hurricane Preparedness Week: Take a hurricane awareness tour, get current forecast information, access safety tips and resources, share daily themes and prepared social media messages, and view videos on evacuation plans, supplies, and helping your neighbors.
- Summer Safety: In addition to some of the spring weather safety topics, you'll find information and videos on air quality, drought, thunderstorms, and wildfires. Educate your campus communities on the Enhanced Fujita tornado intensity scale, red flag warnings and other fire weather watches, keeping pets cool and safe, and air quality alerts.
- Fall Safety: View videos on what to do during a drought, wildfire safety tips, what the impacts of space weather are, and the science behind different weather phenomena.
In addition to the social media messaging for each weather hazard, the NWS #WeatherReady Wednesday initiative seeks to help spread weekly weather safety messages. The messaging for
#WinterSafety,
#SpringSafety,
#SummerSafety, and
#FallSafety can be shared based on the current weather or you may choose to share messaging about weather that occurs elsewhere for those who may be traveling.
The National Seasonal Safety Campaign is part of NOAA's larger efforts to build a
Weather-Ready Nation, one that is prepared for extreme weather, water, and climate events. The devastating effects of these events can be reduced by educating the community and taking advanced action. The NWS offers several ways to
get involved such as joining the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network community; submitting a survivor story; and becoming a NWS cooperative observer, storm spotter, or WRN ambassador.

NPPD Cybersecurity Careers: A Webinar for College Students and Recent Graduates
In partnership with the Department of Homeland Security Office of Academic Engagement, the National Protection and Programs Directorate (NPPD) is hosting a webinar from 4:00-5:00PM ET on Thursday, March 29, 2018 for college and university students and recent graduates interested in pursuing a cybersecurity career at NPPD. This webinar will feature a panel of NPPD employees who will share their experiences in cybersecurity and career paths at NPPD. In addition, human resource officials will explain the federal application process and highlight NPPD career pathways for students and recent graduates.

LIVERESPECT on Campus
On March 6, 2018, A Call to Men launched
LIVERESPECT on Campus, an "on-campus movement for college students who want to promote healthy, respectful manhood and prevent dating violence, sexual assault, sexual harassment, stalking, bullying and all forms of violence and discrimination."
In addition to providing a
pledge for members of the campus community to take to "promote healthy, respectful manhood," LIVERESPECT provides a
toolkit that includes educational information and social media images to launch a campaign for your campus or community.
The pledge includes a commitment to:
- LISTEN: Listen to women and believe their experiences
- REFLECT: Reflect on and challenge any harmful messages you have received about gender
- SPEAK OUT: Talk about healthy, respectful manhood with other men and boys, and speak out against sexism and inequality
- ACT: Identify the areas of your life where you can influence your peers and culture, and use your platform to create positive social change
A Call to Men's mission is to "promote a healthy and respectful manhood and shift attitudes and behaviors that devalue women, girls and other marginalized groups." View the
