A Little Bit of LT History
"Bridging the Gap"
Nature Trail
In September of 1996, the collaboration between the Westminster Village Northeast (WVN) facility and students of Forest Glen Elementary School (FG) resulted in the "Bridging the Gap" trail. This project was intended to bridge the generation gap by giving young and old a place to share.

Recently, John Aleshire shared this article from the Indianapolis Star and the story of how he worked with the Forest Glen principal at the time, Steve Foster. John, a member of the senior management team at WVN, was looking for ideas to bridge the generation gap between the residents of WVN and the students at FG. The two agreed that the Student Council for FG would spend time with the WVN Council. The mix of students and residents was "magic".

John stated, " The Village Council folks talked about their lives and what it had been like being 8. Many of the men were WWII veterans, and the kids were mesmerized. One of our residents, Bunny McIntosh, was a teacher and she had just turned 100. She was the star and the kids were awed that they got to hang out with a 100 year old person. Then we had lunch. And it got even better."

At WVN, there were 90 acres. One part of the property had a woods with a sizeable creek, even a small waterfall. FG and WVN got a grant to develop an amazing walking trail down by the creek. Big enough for able residents to walk and big enough for a large golf cart to do tours for more frail residents. And, it was also for science classes from FG to come as extensions of science and nature lessons.
Eventually, John Aleshire and Steve Foster both moved on to other jobs, but the magic of what happened for those 3 or 4 amazing years has been one of John's most heart-felt experiences.
If you have stories about the history of Lawrence Township, please pass them along. We always love to hear these wonderful stories. Click here to reach the Foundation by email or call 317-423-8300.
