Burlingame Opts for 100% Renewable Energy
Starting this month, the City of Burlingame will be purchasing 100% renewable energy for all of its electricity needs. Burlingame will be part of Peninsula Clean Energy's ECO100 program, an opt-up option available to all San Mateo County residents. Mayor Ricardo Ortiz explains why the City decided to opt-up from the default rate (known as ECOplus) to ECO100, "we believe the City should serve as a role model for others and support renewable energy the best way we can."
By opting-up to ECO100, the City will be reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 1,000 tons/year. That is equivalent to removing 218 cars from the road; or planting 26,000 tree saplings. Council Member Donna Colson urges Burlingame residents to take similar action, "for those looking to support renewable energy or wishing to take a real action for our environment, opting up to ECO100 is the easiest and most effective way to make a difference."

Invite Burlingame Police to Your Neighborhood Event
On Tuesday, August 1, neighborhoods throughout Burlingame are invited to join forces with thousands of other communities nationwide for the National Night Out crime prevention event. National Night Out is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and is co-sponsored locally by the Burlingame Police Department. Over 15,000 communities from all 50 states are expected to participate in "America's Night Out Against Crime."
From 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., people in neighborhoods throughout Burlingame are asked to turn on their outside lights and spend the evening outdoors with neighbors. Many neighborhoods will be hosting a variety of special events such as block parties and cookouts.

The Growing Problem of Electronic Waste

There's a dirty secret about electronic waste. In California, even in Silicon Valley, it's often shipped to developing countries, where its hazardous components contaminate water, soil and air. As the volume of e-waste increases, due to shorter product life cycles, how can we make sure it's recycled responsibly? Two speakers will offer ideas: Tim Goncharoff of Santa Cruz County, which recently passed strict e-waste legislation; and James Kao, founder of GreenCitizen, a sustainable e-waste recycling firm based in Burlingame.
