deanmessageHello everyone,
As I begin my term as the new Dean of Arts and Science, I want to take the opportunity to introduce myself and to let you know how honoured I am to be a part of the Faculty of Arts and Science and the larger Queen's Community.

With every change comes new opportunities, challenges, and experiences, and I look forward to sharing in those times with all of you. Queen's is internationally recognized as an institution exceling at all facets of the university experience. I can attest to the fact that the spirit, heritage, and success that this institution prides itself on are immediately evident to everyone who comes into contact with this very special and unique community of people.

Thank you to everyone who has helped make this transition successful, and to all of you for continuing to improve and strengthen our Faculty's impressive reputation. I have been amazed at all the inspiring work being done by so many of our departments, offices, faculty, staff members, and students.

Finally, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Vice-Dean Gordon Smith, who has been such a steadfast Interim Dean for the past year. I look forward to working with him, and with all of you, in the weeks, months, and years to come.

Cha Gheill!
Barbara Crow, PhD

theconversationThe Conversation

Announced in the Gazette last week, Queen's has signed on as a founding member of The Conversation Canada, a daily independent news and analysis online publication delivering expertise from the academic and research community directly to the public. Since the site's launch last Monday, three of your colleagues, Drs. Sarita Srivastava (Sociology), James Miller (LLC), and  Stéfanie von Hlatky (Political Studies) (co-authored with PhD student Meaghan Shoemaker), have penned pieces that already have hundreds of views.

The Conversation platform offers explanatory journalism written by researchers - illuminating news with academic expertise and introducing new ideas. Launched in Australia in 2011, 30,000-plus academics from 2,065 institutions worldwide are registered as contributing authors.  Canada is the 6th national affiliate of the global network.

Impact and Engagement:

Queen's has joined the The Conversation because it is a proven tool for promotion and knowledge mobilization.  For example, the data show that 60 per cent of authors are contacted for media follow up, 14 per cent are contacted for conference presentations, and 16 per cent are contacted to engage in research collaboration. Furthermore, the proprietary state-of-the-art distributed content model and content management system provides real-time analytics for both researchers and member universities.

The Conversation website attracts 4.8M visits per month, and reaches 35M through Creative Commons licensing. Readership includes policymakers, journalists, academics, business people, influencers, students and others in search of informed, fact-based analysis. Over 22,000 media outlets around the world re-purpose content from The Conversation, including The Washington Post, Maclean's, Le Monde, The Guardian, Time Magazine and The Hindu.

The Conversation will increase access of Queen's researchers to new national and global communications channels and journalism organizations. It will also bring prominence to, and demonstrate the impact of, Queen's research in a variety of areas - from society and culture, science and technology, to the arts and health studies.

How to get involved:

Any current Queen's researcher or academic can write for The Conversation Canada. Undergraduate or master's candidates can also be published if they are writing as a co-author with a current researcher or academic.

To register as an author, researchers are invited to visit The Conversation website to complete an author profile and pitch their ideas. Researchers can also work with their faculty communications team or the central Queen's communications team to be connected with an editor.

More information can be found on our website. Should you have any questions about The Conversation model or how to get involved, please do not hesitate to contact Melinda Knox, Associate Director, Research Profile and Initiatives at [email protected] or ext. 79653.

visitingVisiting Scholar Program - 2017/18

A separate fund to be administered by the Faculty Deans has been established to encourage academic visits by women, visible minorities, aboriginal peoples and people with disabilities. This is not to be confused with the International Visitors Program.

As has been the case in years past, the primary consideration will be the quality of the nominee and the potential for positive benefits to the broader learning environment in light of the Fund's objectives to encourage academic visits by women, visible minorities, aboriginal peoples and people with disabilities. Interdisciplinary and interdepartmental submissions will also be given a high priority. Proposals must include the Scholar's curriculum vitae and a detailed budget. Faculty of Arts and Science Guidelines for adjudicating these proposals are attached. The Principal's Office will establish an Advisory Committee to review all applications and make recommendations to the Dean on those proposals deemed worthy of funding. Decisions should be made by early September 2017.
Please forward your application(s) to Diane directly by August 18, 2017.
