July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month

For Minority Mental Health Month, NAMI will continue to promote the theme of "Into Mental Health: Inspired, Informed, Involved." The campaign focuses on the power of starting inspiring conversations, getting informed to know the right thing to say and encouraging people to proudly proclaim that they are #IntoMentalHealth!

As a NAMI leader, you play a significant role in growing the movement. We have prepared some resources for NAMI Affiliates and State Organizations to use to make #MinorityMentalHealth month successful.
  • Message guide and style sheet
  • Awareness graphics to download, print or share on social media
  • Customizable flyer in Microsoft Word
  • Sample press release
  • Sample mayoral/gubernatorial proclamation and community partner letter
(You may be prompted to log in first.)

If you have any questions, please contact NAMI's communications team at [email protected]
Your Voice Matters, Share Your Story!
Your voice matters and sharing your story will help protect access to mental health care for all Americans.  NAMI has been collecting stories and we encourage every member to share more. This is a way we can collect stories to share with our policy makers and help them be more aware of the impacts their decisions have on our mental health.

NAMI set up a Survey Monkey link  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MHCoverageStory
where Members can share their stories here, which we can share on social media, in alerts, and so on. The survey also asks for permission to share, whether they want to remain anonymous, etc. This short survey seeks information from members regarding how mental health coverage has helped you and what would happen if you didn't have coverage.

Update on Family & Peer Program Training's

NAMI CA is currently finalizing a contract with the Mental Health Services Oversight and Accountability Commission (MHSOAC) to conduct family and peer program trainings, starting in the next couple of months. We will be sending out a survey in the next month or so to query the affiliate field on which program trainings are needed and where, and will then create a training schedule for the year based off of that.

We appreciate everyone's patience as NAMI CA has worked through obtaining this funding that will allow us to hold trainings and many other important projects to better serve affiliates, peers, and families for the next 3 years. We will share more info as soon as it is available.

New Mental Health Resources for the LGBTQ+ Community

Each Mind Matters  (EMM)  recently introduced new mental health materials for three key segments of the LGBTQ+ population: youth/young adults, older adults, and (coming soon) providers working with Latino youth. Explore these resources by clicking on links below.

The  brochure discusses caring for your mental health as an LGBTQ+ young adult, including information on sexual orientation, gender identity, and coming out; healthy relationships; common mental health challenges and their symptoms.

The guide provides information on mental health for older LGBT adults, including considerations around caregiving, legal affairs, rejection and discrimination, and getting the support you need as you move into older adulthood. EMM believes these could be useful tools for your organization and the community you serve. Here are a few ways to promote these new resources in your community:
  • Share them at your office, at community events and fairs, or at any event your organization may participate in.
  • Send copies to local providers and any cultural task forces or committees in your county.
  • Contact organizations that are planning Pride celebrations or other cultural outreach events and share information and materials with them.
  • Provide links to these resources on your website or share them through your social media channels.
  • Share information about upcoming cultural celebrations by adding them to the Events Page on the Each Mind Matters website.
Directing Change: Films by Youth for Diverse Communities
As part of the Directing Change Program and Film Contest ( www.DirectingChange.org ) youth created short films that explore how different cultures view suicide prevention and mental health. All films  for diverse communities  can be viewed and downloaded at no cost.  Here is a small selection of films addressing gender and for LGBTQ youth.
If you would like to learn more about how to use these videos, see EMM's Directing Change Tip Sheet .

In addition, visit the Each Mind Matters website for  stories of hope and recovery  for the LGBTQ community and the  Walk in Our Shoes  website for a youth friendly animated vignette.
