EDWARD BEARDSLEY  | 1938 - 2017

I had the amazing opportunity to visit and interview Edward Beardsley (photo above) last Monday, June 12th, at his home and studio in Wrightwood with local music icon Chris Darrow.  We were discussing doing a retrospective exhibition of Ed's work at the Ginger Elliott Exhibition Center at Claremont Heritage this fall.  Yesterday, June 20th, I received a call from Chris, saying Ed has passed away in his sleep the night before. I intend to continue planning the exhibition, but may now look for a larger venue and will keep everyone updated  - David Shearer

Edward Beardsley

Edward R. Beardsley is a California artist known for his sardonic, sometimes caustic imagery critiquing the human condition.

Beardsley has enjoyed a long and varied career including teaching stints at several prominent universities, serving as a staff writer for a paper in Oregon, and designing theatrical posters, scenery, and promotions for stage productions. Beardsley holds an MFA in painting and printmaking from the Claremont Graduate University. After serving three years in the U.S. Army in Europe he spent a year studying painting and drawing at Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles.

He served as Dean of the Division of Fine Arts at the University of California, Riverside where he was the founder and first director of the internationally renowned UCR/California Museum of Photography. In 1994 he was invited to join the working group for the digital image at George Eastman House in Rochester, New York, for which he produced two important white papers on the evolving social consequences of digital technologies.

He is the author of three books: "Ecce Homo: the paintings of Edward Beardsley," "Monsieur Souris," and "Doings in the Department of Azusa." His short fiction has appeared in online and print publications. His paintings have been featured on albums by Alice Cooper, Kaleidoscope, and Chris Darrow. His work has been exhibited across the country in various institutions and galleries.

Beardsley was 78.

Don't Miss This Opportunity to See a Groundbreaking Exhibition including the History of Trees in Claremont by Claremont Heritage!

Tree Speak: Interpretation of the Rustlings April 1-July 23, 2017

Tree Speak: Interpretations of the Rustlings presents visual interpretations, by artists working in the area, which ascend from the concept or image of trees and leaves in nature. A survey of Claremont's long history as the City of Trees will be presented by Claremont Heritage.  The city's tree-planting tradition began in 1907 and many of the Heritage Groves and Landscapes remain today. With trees threatened by drought and disease, the City is seeking ways to preserve our Urban Forest for future generations.

Tree Speak features artists who have found their voice in nature: Steve Comba, Jeff Faust, Athena H Hahn, Amy Maloof, Barbara Schenck, Steve Schenck, Christopher Toovey, Georgette Unis, Dan Van Clapp and Jane Park Wells plus poetry by Beth Benjamin. The exhibition was organized by Rebecca Hamm with Julia Bourbois and David Svenson. Major support is provided by West Coast Arborists with generous additional support from Community Home Energy Retrofit Project (CHERP) and Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden.

PUBLIC FORUM | Envision an Eco Community, for Claremont and Beyond | Saturday, June 24th | 2:00 - 4:00 pm | Garner House

Claremont Heritage 840 N Indian Hill Blvd. Claremont, CA 91711

You are invited to join with other creative thinkers in discussing and suggesting projects for a joint proposal...

Please join Sustainable Claremont and Claremont Heritage for a thought-provoking and fun afternoon as we envision an eco community for Claremont, and beyond.

We will start with socializing and refreshments, followed by a brief presentation of The Claremont Project - an opportunity to gather the many strands of sustainability in our region and weave a beautiful future.  Then we hope you will join in conversations and share how you see public and private partnerships creating a vibrant and sustainable community.

The Claremont Project will bring us together in a joint proposal to fund initiatives with positive environmental, economic, and social benefit. When this was done in Oberlin, Ohio, The Oberlin Project brought in $135 million and funded a full-spectrum of sustainability proposals from the city, college, schools, businesses, and more. It drew national attention. We can do that as well! Think boldly, bring your ideas for an eco community in Claremont and beyond.
