June 25, 2017:  Participation Service

Dick Park

The Participation Service has its roots in the Quaker Meeting. There is quiet music with introductory words in the beginning, and quiet music at the end, but in between, the silence is broken only by individuals sharing thoughts and feelings that are significant to them. When others are speaking, listen with love. If you respond to others, be sure to let them know that you have understood what they have said, whether or not you agree. It is preferable to speak out of your own feelings and experiences, therefore talking in terms of "what I feel" rather than "what people feel." Silence is preferred to time-filling conversation.

Dick Park is a retired social worker and long-time member of this congregation.

(If you have an announcement for the Sunday service, send it to Julie Prentice [email protected]
The Sunday Circle 9 am
uuachalice
9 am - The Sunday Circle  (Contemplative Service newly renamed)

This lay-led group gathers in the Fireside Room.  Participants volunteer to light the chalice and lead a session by selecting a reading or speaking briefly on a specific matter of interest. There is a short period of silence for all to contemplate what has been shared, followed by dialog among all who wish to speak.  Midway in the hour we take time for those who wish to light a candle in honor of personal joys or sorrows and then conclude with more dialog on the topic of the day.

Upcoming Topics and Leaders:

6/25/17 Thinking, Fast and Slow--Paul Steinman
7/2/17   Music that Moves Us --Paul Kaufman
7/9/17   Has the Meaning of Friendship Changed--Kim Holscher
 7/16/17 UU Voices--Kat Braeman
7/23/17 More by Mary Oliver --Doug Kerr
 7/30/17 Gratitude--Carol Kerr

Across the year we have 2 or 3 "brainstorming" sessions to identify specific topics of interest and willing leaders for the weeks ahead.  We also have some "potluck" Sundays without a designated leader where everyone is welcome to bring some wisdom, humor, or a poem to share (or just come to partake).

This is a less formal service and a smaller group than the 10:30 service and can be a good way for newcomers to connect and feel welcomed.

The Sunday Circle is held from 9:00 am to 10:00 am each Sunday in the Fireside Room.
Words of Joy
Here's a little story about a father for your meditation, on the strength of community: A father wanted to leave his estate to his children, but he wanted to be sure that they would stick together and look after each other when he died. So he gave each of them a small stick and asked them to break it, which they easily did. Then he took several of the same size sticks and bound them together, and asked them to break the bundle. No one could. Moral: you are stronger when you are bound together than when separate.

This congregation has certainly pulled together lately, to become like a strong bundle of sticks rather than a collection of fragile single twigs. Your commitment has shown through the many things you do here: the many volunteer tasks and projects, the committee work, the recent congregational meeting, the pledge drive, which has exceeded the original, though modest, goal. The people I have had a chance to work with this past year are many, too numerous to mention here, but I would like to take this opportunity to thank this past year's Board of Trustees and outgoing President Dianne Estrada for all their good work and support.

From June 19 through the 25th I will be attending the UU Ministers Association annual meetings and the UUA General Assembly in New Orleans.   After GA, I will be on vacation until mid-week the week of August 21st, although on that very day I will still be in Oregon, visiting my grandchildren and, I hope, viewing the total solar eclipse - an event I have waited many years to see! I will be checking email and phone messages through most of the summer.

Here is a thought for your summer, wherever you find yourself:

I wish to begin my summer well; to do something in it worthy of it and me; to transcend my daily routine...to have my immortality now...in the quality of my daily life!"
                                                                        --Henry David Thoreau

Tribal. I am attending the national gathering of the tribe this year in New Orleans. I expect as always to come back inspired. I recommend watching a little bit online. (I think there is a link in the newsletter already.) My daughter is coming with me and it will be her first UUA General Assembly. I hope the middle school program inspires her as well. There are some good articles about General Assembly in the UU World magazine. If you are not receiving your copy, email Janette.

Summer RE
There will be childcare again this summer and Lauren Estrada is back from college to help out. An activity table will be staffed by volunteers and myself in the foyer for K-6 and whoever else wants to join in. I will be teaching some art skills too. Our YRUU (grades 7-12) will continue to meet on Sunday morning unless they decide a different time.

I just learned about Measure A in Marin County. This provides free admission to Marin County Parks on first Saturdays of the months. Very cool. I'm interested in having some UUCM family park days on these days. Pencil these in? First on would be July 2 and I am picking McNear's Beach as the first location, 3PM-6pm. Interested? What is your favorite Marin County Park?

Are you traveling this summer?  Maybe you can save some of those toiletries for our collections to give St Vincent's for their shelter ministry?

Make the most of your Summer !!!

New Usher Scheduler needed
uucmchalice
Volunteer needed to take over the duty of scheduling ushers for the Sunday services. There are currently 16 ushers on the list, most serving just once or twice a quarter.  Scheduling might be feasible with "sign-up-genius" but supervision is required to ensure that two ushers are present without fail.

Please contact Nani Ranken for further details if you are interested in taking this task over from her.
Adult Ed Announces UU Roots Summer Reading -Thoroughly Thoreau!
Adult Ed Announces UU Roots Summer Reading -Thoroughly Thoreau!

UU Roots is an ongoing reading group series for members and friends that explores the religious roots of our Unitarian Universalist tradition .

This summer, UU Roots will concentrate on Transcendentalism, a philosophical movement that was a major current in "modern" Unitarianism. Each month, a link to an insightful, witty, even snarky New Yorker article about one or more Transcendentalists will appear here in the UUCM Weekly. We encourage you to click on the link and read the articles online, most of which are about 5 pages long. If you prefer, you may borrow a printed copy of the month's article, located in a specially-marked box in the Community Room.

And now, for the month of June, here is an eye-popping article on that most Marin-like of the bunch, Henry David Thoreau: "Pond Scum: Henry David Thoreau's moral myopia," by Kathryn Schultz, from the Oct. 19, 2015 issue of the New Yorker:

If you wish to respond in any way to any of these articles, please send your brief letter (250 words) to  [email protected], no later than two weeks after the link appears. Lisa may publish these responses in the Weekly, at her discretion, during the month.

Look upon this "summer reading" as coffee hour conversation starters and  preparation and for the 6 classes on Transcendentalism that Rev. Joy hopes to offer (time permitting) in the coming year.

A  Margaret Fuller Salon led by our very own Kat Braeman is being planned for  the end of July, exact date TBD.
