"YOUNG PEOPLE MATTER"
July E-News 2017

Early this year we ran a series of events called Northern Lights to meet the needs of young people living in the north of the shire. Sadly we do not have funding to keep running these events, however the need is becoming more crucial.

We NEED your HELP to keep this program running. Consider donating financially, attending the training day to volunteer on the program, donating food, prizes or equipment, it's all welcome!

It takes a child to inspire a community!

MULLUMBIMBY COTTAGE

It's been a busy month  at the BYS Mullumbimby Cottage with lots going on. We are still so grateful for Dr Liz who continues to bring hot, nutritious food twice a week  and enough usually to feed six groups, dep ending on how much the boys eat.

Nalia Dubay had a grea t day doing Dolphin Dreaming at the Byron Lighthouse with Delta Kay, the one sunny day in days of rain. They did activities and got a lot  of interesting and useful information about our local Arakwal history. They were very excited to go up into the lighthouse and spot whales, an experience they would  not otherwise have. We also visited the YAC and had lunch in town. The girls have also been learning how to make Indigenous bracelets and macrame hangers while discussions take place.

Next term they'll be learning how to make rafia baskets and we have a wonderful surprise for them as well.

Michael Marriott, the youth Drug & Alcohol worker with the Dept of Health also began what will be a series of visits, having discussions and gving relevant and useful info  to each group. The year 8 boys were a little rambunctious but the Year 8 girls were a receptive group and enjoyed the visit.

The boys' groups love doing physical activities with Rick Newman and love Dr Liz's food. The Year 8 group visited Rainforest Rescue where they had a talk, a short video,  more food and played competitive table tennis with Julian. The Year 9 group will visit next term. Thanks to Julian Grey for his time, energy, passion and the cakes that  were an excellent tool to encourage learning.

Byron Community Campus - Ballina Excursion

2017 is speeding by and Semester 1 is over!  Distance Education Students celebrated by going on an end of semester excursion to the Australian Seabird Rescue site in Ballina.  The lovely Marine Biologist Ollie, gave us a very informative and moving talk about the plight of sea birds and mammals who are facing extreme hazards through plastic pollution.  The students then had the chance to get up close and personal with some beautiful turtles.
The students finished the excursion at Ballina skatepark and amazed distance education teacher, Katie Magripilis and youth worker, Dale Shaddick, with their skill and daring.
Thanks to Southern Cross School and to Australian Seabird Rescue Organisation for sharing their time and resources.

The Here Today production, funded by Country Arts Support Program, Regional Arts NSW has been a huge success in local schools.
Devised by Byron Youth Theatre in consultation with local psychologist Peter Chown, Headspace, Acon, Beyond Blue, Black Dog institute and Mindframe, the Here Today production was presented as a Forum Theatre experience.
Forum theatre is part of Theatre of the Oppressed developed by the late Augusto Boal.  Scenes were devised showing a young female experiencing bullying from peers and dealing with the stresses of HSC and pressures from her family.  The ending suggesting that without assistance this young person may take their own life.
Once the performance has been shown the audience are invited to select scenes where they think the protagonist can do or say something different which will bring about a more positive outcome.

Here are some of the responses from students.
" It was hard to watch the bullying, it was real and I know many people who have been bullied.  It was great that we got to explore solutions to this issue.  It was also fun being part of it" Student Mullumbimby High School
" I learnt that you can always get help, even when things feel really hard.  The play was great.  I really enjoyed it" Student Byron High School
"Great to see the kids so engaged and valuing this, it also brought new understanding between staff and students"  Welfare teacher Mullumbimby High School
" Each year the Byron Youth Theatre brings a performance to our school that highlights and reflects a relevant youth issue that the young actors have researched and work-shopped together, most recently bullying. They are always lively and  insightful performances that also challenge the audience's thoughts and feelings and behaviors, thank you BYT"  Welfare teacher Cape Byron Steiner School.
Many thanks to all who assisted in this production especially Maysoun Bouga, a Theatre of the Oppressed practitioner who volunteered her time to assist in the BYT process and Claire, Summa, Nerida and Phil from Headspace Lismore and Tweed.
A promotional video will be available in early August.  BYT hope that they can share this work with the wider community around September 10th, World Suicide Prevention Day.

The annual Positive Adolescent Sexual Health, PASH conference (June 15th & 16th) was a stunning success again this year.  Over 700 young people attended from schools throughout the region.  Held at Southern Cross University, Lismore Campus, young people and teachers were engaged in a range of workshops and discussions as well as seeing BYT's production " So what about sex?".
This year BYT performed in the main theatre to an appreciative audience of 700+ who clapped after every single scene!!
Feedback from the performances was again overwhelming with many strongly recommending this be the way sexual health and education is taught in schools.  The community forum and discussion evening held at the Byron Theatre on June 15th was also a great success with around 130 community members attending to see BYT's performance and hear expert professional guest speakers talk about sexual health in the online age.  It was live streamed through facebook page PASH Consortium.  Here's the  clip, BYT is on after the introduction around the 11minute mark!

Youth Voices
BYS mission is to give young people a platform to have their voices heard.

Lelani, 15 years old

1.     What has been the best experience in your life?
Moving out of the Catholic School system. Moving to Byron High made a really good change for me, it meets my criteria and I can have a really good shot at a future now.

2.     What inspires you?
My grandfather, definitely. I can't think of anything I've done that didn't require a little something from him - like his knowledge or money or talking to me. He's a very good person.

3. Who would you like to meet and what would you ask them?
Oprah -I'd like talk with her ask how she turned her bad past into something positive.

4. What would you like to see happen in Byron Bay?
If everyone was more friendly in the streets, like it used to be. And less smoking,  especially at Top Park, because everyone sits so close to each other, it could really divide the atmosphere, it breaks up groups, conversations. If there was a designated spot for them to smoke where it could affect nobody but themselves.

5. When do you think a person becomes an adult and how?
I don't think it matters about age, when they take their own responsibilities, make their own appointments, travel, that's what makes somebody a mature adult.

6. What do you believe in?
I believe in a verbal community where you can say anything and express yourself and talk it out and not resort to those terrible things - war, violence. 'Cause if you don't speak about things it builds up and you end up hating the person way more than you have to.

7. What has been the worst experience in your life?
The second time my mum kicked me out was the worst. She dropped me off at the car - I had heaps of stuff with me because I just came back from a camping trip and she said 'Get out of the car, don't call me mum.' I didn't understand - made me resent others in authority, teachers or friends, because if I don't understand that's what happens.

8. What would you like to change in the world?
In a very broad aspect - authority. Just because somebody is trying to teach me why should they control everything I think - put the ideas out there, let me grab them, but then use them for my own good.

9. What's important in a relationship?
Trust. The person I want to be friends with or a boyfriend - I want to have very inviting energy and makes me feel safe.
