The Flathead Valley is in full summer swing! People come from everyone to enjoy our beautiful waters, mild weather, forests, friendly people and wonderful events like the Crown of the Continent Guitar Festival. This past week, John Lang and I celebrated the coming of summer with our friends, supporters and wonderful musicians of the Guitar Foundation Scholarship Program. We sponsored a Benefit Summer Solstice Concert at our home and it was truly delightful. I can't wait to enjoy the festival this coming August!
I have some good news in real estate from Kelly Appraisal Services. Here's the scoop..."The month of May broke all previous records in the number of residential sales. In Flathead County there were 209 residential sales, compared to 147 in May of 2016. In 2006 there were 173 sales and 2017 exceeded that number by 21 percent.
In the first five months of this year there were 619 sales, which is up 6.7 percent from the 580 sales at this time last year. The previous high was in 2006 when there were 657 sales in the first five months."

From my kitchen to yours....

John Lang loved this spicy pimiento cheese so much. He asked where I bought it! Pimientos are making a comeback from the 1950s.

|
Ingredients:
1/3 c mayo, 3 T cream cheese, marscapone or sour cream
2 t Worcestershire sauce, 2 t apple cider vinegar
1 1/2 t dry mustard, 1 T hot sauce, 1 t sugar,
1/2 t Kosher salt, 1/4 t freshly ground pepper
2 T finely grated onion (more as desired)
12 oz jar of pimiento or
chopped roasted red pepper
3 cups coarsely chopped sharp yellow cheddar cheese
Most important...liberal dash of cayenne!
How to make it:
Stir together first 9 ingredients in a medium bowl until smooth. Stir in onion. Fold in pimiento or roasted red pepper and the cheese. Cover and chill 8 to 12 hours. Let stand at room temperature 30 minutes. Stir before serving.
Hands on time for this recipe is 20 minutes and it yields 3 1/2 cups. It's divine on nutty, crunchy wheat bread, as a dip, or try it on your barbecued chicken or burgers. How about on an avocado?

AND EVERY MORNING THE WAY HOME GETS LONGER AND LONGER
Fredrik Backman
The memoir revolves around Grandpa and Noah, his grandson. Noah does his best to comfort and remind Grandpa of the happiest of past memories, specifically back to Grandpa's 16-year-old summer.
Through his memories, Grandpa explains his road to remembering which gets longer with each passing day. Grandpa tells Noah that one day, he will be unable to remember anything, and so Noah must say goodbye and never look back. As Grandpa continues to decline, Noah and his Dad discuss what they can do for Grandpa. Dad gently reminds Noah that they must simply keep him company on the long road.
Years later, Noah fondly shares his own memories of his Grandpa with his daughter. The author explores the human emotions surrounding the fear of growing old. Throughout the novella, the reader feels the intimate power of love, memories, and letting go.
I found this book to be comforting and in a way, instructive. I appreciated the gentleness and wisdom of the characters as they explore this poignant struggle of confronting the aging of a loved one.
