School Bus Road-E-O
What do Barrow BOLD bus drivers do for fun? They have a school bus road-e-o! "This is very competitive and the best training for our drivers. Ongoing driver education contributes to a well trained professional driver" says Transportation Director Wanda Young. Road-e-o competition includes a written test, bus inspection, stop line, backup, railroad crossing, diminishing clearance, student loading, and parallel parking. The top two contestants, Melissa Courtney and Faye Russell represented Barrow County well in the GA Association of Pupil Transportation State Safety Competition the first week in June.
The BCSS school bus drivers operate over 160 buses serving more than 266 routes and covering more than 3.7 million miles per year. Most drivers have an elementary, middle, and high school route. Some drivers, such as our Special Needs drivers, may serve several different schools in both their morning and afternoon routes. See pictures.

Partnering for Success
As Holsenbeck Elementary was putting together a new Science Olympiad team, the coaches thought it would be a great idea to seek out extra help from their feeder high school, Winder-Barrow. Dr. Al Darby, Winder-Barrow High's principal, pointed HES in the direction of a student organization, Science National Honors Society (SNHS), that was excited to help! The high school students began attending HES Science Olympiad practices each Monday. Extra help was beneficial for the students as they were able to get more guidance and individualized practice.
WBHS student, Trace Freeman, said, "Working with kids is always great, but for many of us, Science Olympiad provided the perfect opportunity to return to our elementary school and make a difference in the community."
The positive feelings were mutually felt by the HES Science Olympians. Nathan, a 4th grader, said, "I enjoyed working with the high schoolers because they helped a lot." HES teacher Lauren Stapleton feels thankful for the new partnership and looks forward to working together again in the future.
Importance of Compassion & Citizenship
The Bear Creek Middle School's Eighth Grade Autobots Team and teachers led the school's food drive during the 6th Annual S.O.U.P.er Bowl of Caring. S.O.U.P. is an acronym for Schools Objecting to Unnecessary Poverty. BCMS is the undefeated middle school winner, since the beginning of the S.O.U.P.er Bowl in 2012. "This year BCMS collected 14,411 non-perishable food items of the 33,284 collected school system wide. The elementary school winner was Yargo Elementary with 5700 food items. Russell Middle School received the new "Go Getter Award" for the greatest increase in donations, which were 7501 food items this year," said Ms. Stephanie Byrd. Ms. Byrd is a BCSS Social Worker and Founder & Chairperson of the S.O.U.Per Bowl of Caring.
