Eating Your Words: The Art of Writing About Food

In the age of Instagram, it can seem as if almost everyone you know is photographing & writing about food. But what does it take to convey the wonders of a delicious meal in full sensory detail, and how does that differ from writing (and testing) a recipe that others can replicate accurately? Beyond food journalism and recipe writing, how can fiction writers use descriptions of preparing or eating a meal as a way to understand characters or move a narrative forward?
We'll talk with four Austin food writers about their paths to publication and get their advice for aspiring writers
- Veronica Meewes, author of The Fish Sauce Cookbook and Austin editor at Zagat;
- Megan Myers, freelance writer and editor who blogs at her food blog Stetted;
- Eric Silverstein, founder of the Peached Tortilla and author of the forthcoming Peached Tortilla Cookbook;
- Mary Helen Specht, author of the Austin-set novel Migratory Animals.

Free Events Across Texas in March
This month, we have three great Saturday events planned in three libraries (we love libraries!) in three communities across Texas. First up, our Texas Writes rural library program will visit Mason (March 17) and Iowa Park (March 24) for half-day workshops featuring accomplished authors talking about craft. And on March 31, we'll visit Corpus Christi for the first time, bringing our Executive Director and Program Director to the Ben F. McDonald Library to talk about the craft of writing and the business of publishing. All three of these events will focus on three of our favorite things: Craft, Business, Community. They're free and open to the public (refreshments included!) and we hope you can join us at one or more of them. Stay tuned for information on upcoming April events in our next Footnotes.

Scrivener for Newbies: The Program Writers Rave About

In this hands-on class, instructor Katherine Catmull-who has used Scrivener for nine years to write three novels, numerous plays, and many other large projects-will guide you through the basics of Scrivener. Participants will leave with everything they need to know to start using Scrivener for their own writing.
