Plan Cumberland Open Houses at Cumberland Public Libraries
|

Open houses to be held at libraries throughout Cumberland County
Municipal staff and planners will be holding open houses at libraries in Cumberland County to discuss Plan Cumberland - an ongoing review of the Municipal Planning Strategy and Land Use By-Law. They will answer any questions regarding the project, and collect community feedback. Open houses will take place every Thursday, throughout July and August:
Springhill Public Library - July 13th, 2-4pm
Pugwash Public Library - July 20th, 2-4pm
Parrsboro Service Centre - July 27th, 10am-12pm
River Hibert Library - August 3rd, 2-4pm

Tips on how to mitigate the risks of tick-borne illnesses while enjoying the outdoors
Nova Scotians are encouraged to enjoy the outdoors safely by learning to avoid the blacklegged tick bites that can cause Lyme disease.
Blacklegged ticks are found throughout Nova Scotia. Tick checks are the most important defence against the spread of tick-borne illness. To learn more ways to protect against tick-borne illnesses, please see the Outdoor Recreation and Tick Awareness Information Sheet.

Advocate Harbour sisters are provincial high school track and field medallists
Councillor Fletcher would like to congratulate 16-year-old twins Denver and Gabby Fraser from Advocate Harbour on their recent provincial high school track and field accomplishments! Denver won gold in the long jump and triple jump, and Gabby won silver in the triple jump. Both sisters are contenders to make this summer's Canada Games in Winnipeg. Congratulations Denver and Gabby!

MacPhee remains undefeated with win over Hebert
Councillor Jackson would like to congratulate Springhill resident, Jerico MacPhee, on winning the Elite 1 MMA Amateur Lightweight title. The Elite
1 MMA Amateur Lightweight belt is one of two title belts MacPhee now holds. He is also the Cage Rage Amateur Featherweight title holder. Congratulation Jerico!

Eligible Grant Recipients:
- not-for-profit organizations, including social enterprises;
- businesses (maximum 99 full-time equivalent employees);
- small municipalities (population under 125,000 as per most recent census data (2016));
- Indigenous organizations (including band councils, tribal councils and self-government entities).
Eligible Projects:
- All activities presented in funding applications must reflect eligible activities;
- The duration of the proposed projects must be a maximum of 52 weeks (one year);
- Funding from ESDC cannot exceed $50,000 per project;
- Projects must demonstrate how they meet the mandatory 35% leveraging requirement;
- Projects must demonstrate community support for their project;

An energetic and enthusiastic individual is sought for English-language support for a newcomer family to Springhill, NS. This opportunity is ideal for students seeking language and cultural exchange!
Details
:
Summer volunteer position (July ~ August/September, 2017).
- Learners are a family of three (one adult and two children) with beginner-level English skills.
- Lessons will be held at the family's home, or a neutral location (to be determined) in Springhill, NS.
- English support volunteer must be willing to commit to 2 to 6 hours per week.
- Candidate will possess a university degree, or be in the process of obtaining their degree (preferred, but not required).
- Candidate will possess a TEOSL or other ESL-related certification, or have related previous ESL experience (preferred, but not required).
- Candidate will have functional Spanish skills (preferred, but not required).
- Candidate must be willing to obtain (at no cost) a criminal record check and child abuse registry check (mandatory).

The Canadian Red Cross Society, a non-profit, humanitarian organization dedicated to helping Canadians, as well as the
most vulnerable throughout the world, is seeking volunteers.
Equipment Cleaning and Maintenance volunteer for the Community Health Department. Reporting to the Service Centre Coordinator this position will clean, maintain and preform basic repairs of Red Cross HELP equipment.
Service Centre Assistant for the Community Health Department. Reporting to the Service Centre Coordinator this position will provide excellent customer service to clients who require a
variety of services offered by the Canadian Red Cross.
Personal Disaster Assistance (PDA) Responder for Disaster Management (DM). Reporting to the PDA Supervisor, the PDA Responder will be responsible to fill various on-call shifts on a 24/7 schedule that includes weekends, holidays and evenings. When called on to respond, the PDA Responder will be required to provide relief directly to clients in need of assistance.

Bring Kids' Run Club to Your Community
Doctors Nova Scotia is pleased to be offering our long-standing physical activity program, Kids' Run Club (KRC), to sport organizations across the province. This free, non-competitive running program has traditionally been implemented by schools, but can also be adapted to groups of any size and for kids of all ages. K
RC is a great opportunity for sport clubs/teams to provide team-building experiences and multisport exposure, help kids develop fundamental movement skills, and improve their physical literacy and fitness.
