Breakfast with Gov. Charlie Baker
Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker spoke to over 200 NEC members at a breakfast hosted by Bank of America in Boston on April 13, 2017.  The Governor discussed his efforts to promote economic growth in the region and to work collaboratively with fellow governors. Congresswoman Niki Tsongas spoke to NEC members at a April 25 Congressional Roundtable hosted by The Hampshire House in Boston.  The Congresswoman, who highlighted her work on the Armed Services Committee, among other issues, is pictured her with Mike Mattoon of Vertex Pharmaceuticals. 
NEC Hosts New Democrat Coaltion
New Democrats Share Vision for Growth and Innovation

On April 24, 2017, The New England Council had the opportunity to host a special Congressional Roundtable featuring several members of the New Democrat Coalition.  NEC members had the opportunity to hear from Rep. Jim Himes (CT), who chairs the coalition, as well as past chair Rep. Ron Kind (WI), and members Rep. Seth Moulton (MA), Rep. Terri Sewell (AL).  Council member WilmerHale hosted the Congressional Roundtable at their office in downtown Boston.

The New Democrat Coalition includes "61 forward-thinking Democrats who are committed to pro-economic growth, pro-innovation, and fiscally responsible policies."  The coalition members who participated in the roundtable discussed their concerns with the Trump Administration's policies and highlighted their coalition's efforts to advance bipartisan policies that will promote economic growth and innovation. 
New England Innovates Explores Role of Higher Ed
New England Innovates: Preparing the Innovation Economy Workforce

On April 27, 2017, the Council held the second event in our "New England Innovates" series, which was launched last fall.  "New England Innovates: Preparing the Innovation Economy Workforce" explored the critical role of the region's colleges and universities in developing a talent pipeline to support growth in the innovation economy, and highlighted the importance of partnerships with industry to best prepare students. 

Following opening remarks from Andrea Cox of GE Aviation, a panel of NEC members representing colleges and universities throughout the region discussed their initiatives to prepare students for the 21st century workforce and the associated challenges.

Over 75 people attended the event, which was hosted by Boston University at their Charles River Campus.
Annual Spring Event in Washington, DC
200 NEC Members to Gather in DC This Week
The NEC's Annual Spring Event will take place this week on Wednesday, May 3, and Thursday, May 4, in Washington, DC.  Some 200 Council members are expected to convene for two days of informative events and meetings. 

The event will kick off with a Federal Policy Briefing, where members will hear from the leaders of several federal agencies, including:
  • Dr. France Córdova, Director, National Science Foundation
  • Richard Cordray, Director, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau
  • Chip Fulghum Under Secretary for Management, Department of Homeland Security
  • Michael O'Rielly, Commissioner, Federal Communications Commission
On Wednesday evening, members will gather for our Annual Capitol Hill reception where many members of the New England delegation are expected. 

On Thursday, May 4, we'll start the day with a Congressional Breakfast featuring remarks from the Dean of the New England delegation and Ranking Member of the House Ways and Means Committee, Rep. Richard Neal, and New York Congressman Peter King.  Later in the day, the Council's various policy committees will meet with Congressional and federal agency staff.

DC Dialogue on NECN
April: Rep. Stephen Lynch, Jim Hunt of MA League of Community Health Centers
The most recent episode of DC Dialogue on NECN aired on Sunday, April 23, 2017.  In the first segment, Jim Brett and Eileen Curran were joined by U.S. Representative Stephen Lynch, who shared his views on some of the Trump Administration's policy proposals and discussed recent developments in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria. Later in the show, we were joined by Jim Hunt, President & CEO of the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers, who explained how a repeal of the Affordable Care Act would affect community health centers in the region. 
May: Boston Mayor Martin Walsh
The next episode of DC Dialogue will air on NECN on Sunday, May 28, 2017.  Our guest will be Boston Mayor Martin Walsh, who will discuss some of his recent efforts to drive economic growth in Boston, as well as how some of the Trump Administration's policies are having an impact in Boston and other large cities.  Stay tuned for more details and be sure to tune in on May 28!
