Summer events in Castine
Town of Castine

Castine Historical Society Summer Exhibit -  Castine's Devoted Women: Partnership and Social Reform 1910-1962

The Castine Historical Society's 2017 Summer Exhibit Castine's Devoted Women: Partnership and Social Reform 1910-1962focuses on the lives of Mary W. (Molly) Dewson and Mary G. (Polly) Porter who were life-partners during an age of progressive change encompassing woman's right to vote, labor and wage reform, and feminism.

Molly Dewson was one of the first women to have national political power and influence in Washington D.C.  She earned the respect and friendship of many high profile political figures including Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt during her work for social reform and women's equality.

The story of the two women over their 50-year partnership is told through their words and those of their contemporaries taken from newspaper clippings, letters and memoirs.  The recent gift to the Society of 28 scrapbooks kept by Molly and Polly has provided a wealth of material for the exhibit.  Volunteers spent many hours searching through the pages of the scrapbooks to select the most appropriate images to highlight their story.  These images were then converted into historical panels, which have striking relevance to today's social and political culture

Admission is free.

Fourth of July Celebration

The  4th of July  officially kicks off the Castine summer season.  Visitors from around the world return to a place they have long cherished - "Castine Under The Elms and By The Sea."

Family, friends and visitors alike join in the old fashion day style celebration of parades, flag waving, special foods, evening concerts and the best fireworks display over the bay anywhere!

This year, make your reservations early and stay in one of our cottages, homes for rent or one of our cozy B&B's. The Castine  4th of July Celebration will soon become a family tradition.

Bastille Day Celebration - July 14

The idyllic and historic setting of Castine, Maine, with its pristine Penobscot Bay as a backdrop, is hosting their second annual Bastille Day Celebration on Friday, July 14 th .  This family celebration takes place on the French national holiday and encourages visitors from near and far to experience our Franco-American and Native American culture through music, food, film, lectures, children's activities, and lighthouse tours. Castine traces its French heritage to the Baron de St. Castin.  His marriage to Wabanaki Chief Madockawando's daughter linked our French and Native American cultures.

The celebration begins appropriately with a French toast breakfast.  You'll learn the art of French cooking during our chef's demonstration. Celebration goers will be encouraged to wear white to our late afternoon "Picnic en Blanc" where you'll be seated at long white tables at the town hall, under the elms, while listening to Franco-American music.  Select your designer picnic from our local purveyors or bring your own with French delights.  A plethora of other activities allow you to take in the sites while enjoying a lighthouse tour or tasting hand-cranked ice cream while you take in a little history at the Wilson Museum.  Jesters, jugglers and dancing clowns will delight children of all ages throughout the day.  Historic lectures and films are designed to satisfy even the most discerning history buffs.  Complete your celebration experience with a summer evening concert on the waterfront tapping your toes as you watch sail boats in the distance.

Come early and prepare your palate with a French wine tasting on Thursday afternoon or stay overnight and work off the festival with our 5K road race on Saturday morning.

This event is hosted by the Town of Castine's Bastille Day Celebration Committee.

The festival will include artist awards and an opportunity to sell work created during the event to the public. There will be a welcome cocktail reception on the evening of July 19th. The festival will conclude on the evening of July 22nd with an exhibition and sale of the art created over three days of painting.  Artists may paint at a variety of locations of their choosing within a defined area surrounding the town of Castine.

July 20 | Artist Registration and Festival Launch | 6:00 - 8:30 AM
Artists check-in at the Castine Town Common to obtain their information packet and have their blank canvases stamped for the event.  Visitors will enjoy traveling around Castine and capturing the artists at work on Thursday and Friday.

Behavioral Health Specialists: An Untapped Tobacco Cessation Resource
Smoking cessation

Behavioral health professionals, those who assist people with mental, emotional and/or behavioral conditions that adversely affect quality of life, are a currently underutilized resource in the fight to reduce smoking rates in the US.

Although continuing to smoke while undergoing substance use treatment for other drugs makes it more difficult to successfully remain abstinent, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that less than half of substance abuse centers (42%) offer tobacco cessation services and only 34% offer counseling on quitting smoking.

Compassion or efficiency may motivate substance use treatment professionals and others associated with the field, such as law enforcement professionals, to neglect what is perceived as a "less harmful" nicotine addiction while treatment for addictions to other drugs occurs. However, research published in the 2004 Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology shows that stopping smoking during attempts to quit using alcohol and other substances is associated with a 25% increased likelihood of successfully staying away from all addictions, long-term.

According to Dr. Chad Morris of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, who presented at the 2017 Annual Tobacco Conference in South Portland on  May 9-10 , this is because "An addiction is an addiction is an addiction. Smoking is used as an indirect coping strategy that reinforces coping through addiction," he said.

In addition, smokers on psychotropic medications who quit smoking are sometimes able to get off of their medications completely; due to the positive effects that quitting smoking has on anxiety, stress, overall mood and quality of life. This, according to Morris, is at odds with "general wisdom" in the field of substance use treatment that psychiatric symptoms are aggravated by stopping smoking. Instead, he said, the observed "increase in psychiatric symptoms" associated with smoking cessation could be nicotine withdrawal symptoms or a toxic result of over-medication, not under-medication, since smoking inhibits the effects of these medications.

The CDC states that nicotine does have mood-altering effects which can, in the short term, mask negative symptoms of mental illness, but stresses that this puts people in this population at greater risk for addiction, and that quitting smoking "can actually be part of the treatment for those with mental illness symptoms" with careful monitoring.

According to Morris, what we now know is that those who have mental illnesses and addictions to other drugs who smoke have more psychiatric symptoms, have increased hospitalizations, require higher dosages of medications, and are twice as likely to leave against the advice of their doctors if withdrawal symptoms are not treated.

In other words, smoking makes it more difficult, not less so, for some of our most vulnerable people to find life stability and develop healthy coping mechanisms for life stressors.

People with mental health symptoms and/or addictions to other substances smoke at rates two to three times higher than the rest of the population. When this is put into the context of reduction of smoking rates overall since 1957, this essentially means that reduction of smoking rates in the behavioral health population is approximately 30 years behind the general population, said Morris. "The fact is, persons with mental health symptoms and addictions are able to quit using tobacco; want to quit at the same rates as the rest of the population (75%), and are in fact trying to quit- 65% tried to quit in the last 12 months."

Morris pointed out that the same skills and resources behavioral health professionals have developed to treat their clients' mental health concerns make them the ideal specialists to effectively provide smoking cessation services for everyone, such as:  expertise in behavioral change; ability to leverage peer supports; access to "therapeutic alliances;" ability to provide co-occurring treatment; interactions with high-risk populations; patient-directed approach to treatment; prevention, wellness and whole person perspective; ability to provide continuity of care; and experience with performance measurements.

The CDC states that smoking is the leading cause of preventable death. More than 480,000 people die of tobacco-related illnesses in the US every year, including approximately 41,000 deaths from exposure to secondhand smoke. That's approximately 1,300 deaths per day. This is nearly double all the deaths caused by obesity, other drugs, suicide, motor vehicle accidents, alcohol, homicide, and AIDS/HIV put together (288,000 deaths annually), said Morris, and of the total number of deaths associated with tobacco use, and approximately 200,000- almost half- are found in persons with behavioral health conditions.

Healthy Acadia is available to assist behavioral health facilities in assessing their smoke-free/tobacco-free policies and can provide technical assistance to help providers create, update, or implement best practice tobacco-free policies. Please contact Julie Daigle at 667-7171 or  [email protected]  in Hancock County, or contact Gabriel O'Brien at 255-3741 or  [email protected]  in Washington County for more information or assistance with a tobacco free policy at your behavioral health facility or practice.

Michael Simon was born in Hungry and lived through a war, a holocaust and a revolution before arriving as a refugee in the United States in 1957. His knowledge and passion for photography (and some serendipity) landed him a teaching position at Beloit College in 1968. Doing things a bit out of order, he earned his MFA from Rochester Institute of Technology some years after getting his teaching position. He has photos at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts; he has written Hungarian Photography-A Comparative History, and seen the publication of The World is Beautiful: The Photography of Michael Simon, edited by Thomas H. Wilson.

He retired to Maine in 1998 and lives in Swanville with his wife Carol. He began volunteering at PMM four years ago. He and his fellow Tuesday volunteer, Linda Long, solve the world's problems while scanning historic negatives or prints. He curated "The Evolution of the Photographic Snapshot" which was part of PMM's Magic of Photography exhibition in 2015. (read about that here) He also is also a volunteer at the Nickerson School in Swanville.
