****5 SLOTS LEFT IN TUESDAY 3/20, 6p-8p****
Tarab, Taqsim, and Sultanah
Tarab is that amazing moment when the whole audience is emotionally elevated into ecstasy by an artist. In tarab moments, the communication is the vocabulary of feeling and energy, of flow and line within the body, time suspends and lengthens.
According to experts in Egypt, Tarab is a gift from God and cannot be controlled. But an artist can and should work on their Sultana, the ability to release into the music and movement, to be in contact with your own personal flow, dancing from the inside out, possibly leading to the effect of Tarab. The workshop will experience taqsim and Oum Kulsum songs as conductive of sultana and tarab.
****3 SLOTS LEFT IN THURSDAY 3/22, 6p-8p****
Beledi Awad and Tet Beledi
Baladi is one of those words that mean so many things; it literally means "My country" but to Egyptian style dancers it can refer to a specific progression of musical sections. In Cairo Baladi is particularly used for dancing and associated with Awalim (the professional dancers) from the famous Mohamed Ali Street in Old Cairo.
Sahra will first present the cultural history of the Awalem, Mohamed Ali Street, and of the possible roots of Baladi progression. Then we will learn the classic structure of the musical/rhythmic sections in the two basic types of Baladi; Awadi Baladi and Tet Baladi - and learn steps and movements for each section.
