Michael Sellet Retiring

It is with a heavy heart that we announce that Mike Sellet is retiring as the Regional Safety Coordinator at the end of June 2017.

Mike came to BOCES in January 2008 and has been a champion for school safety and mental health.  His work with schools empowered administrators and staff alike to take their safety protocols to a new level. His training style was especially apparent when he worked with monitors, aides and bus drivers. His scenarios, which often included role play, enabled these staff members to fully understand how important they are to the safety of the schools that they serve.

As co-chair of the Regional Crisis Team (RCT), Mike worked tirelessly with Dr. Lynn Allen and the RCT to develop procedures and protocols that support our schools' mental health initiatives during and after a school emergency. An offshoot of his work is the Administrators Regional Crisis Team, which supports administrators in emergencies.

Mike is planning on taking some time to relax. But we expect to see him in the near future as a consultant, developing programs to offer schools.

We owe Mike our gratitude for his work and wish him the best in his future endeavors.

In our next issue we will introduce you to our new Regional Safety Coordinator.

Emergency Plan Submittal 2017-2018

On June 5, 2017, school principals outside of NYC should have received a letter from the New York State Education Department (NYSED) explaining the process for submitting 2017-2018 building-level emergency plans.

NYSED and the New York State Police (NYSP) have developed a new template, followed by an automated application through the NYSED business portal, which will allow for secure submission of plans to the NYSP. While school districts still need to submit their plans to local law enforcement in the traditional way this year, the state hopes that local law enforcement officials will have access to the state template soon. Below is an excerpt from the letter from Renee L. Rider, Assistant Commissioner for the Office of Student Support Services:

Accessing the new application via the SED Business Portal

School Building ERPs must be submitted by the Chief Executive Officer** of each school, using the following steps:

1. Go to https://portal.nysed.gov/abp
2. Click on the "Log In" button
3. Enter your existing SEDDAS username and password
4. Under the heading "My Applications," click the link to "SED Monitoring and Vendor Performance System"
5. In your inbox, you will see "School ERP"
6. Click "View" to enter data, note that:
  • Screen shots of the entire survey, with instructions for each question, are available to download from within the application
  • The application will allow you to enter and save information to finish at a later time
  • When all required information is entered, download a copy for your records, and then the CEO must click "Submit"

** The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of each public school building and charter school as recorded in SEDREF (https://portal.nysed.gov/pls/sedrefpublic/SED.sed_inst_qry_vw$.startup) has been entitled to SED Monitoring and this electronic application in SEDDAS. If the CEO information in SEDREF is incorrect for your school, you may update it by following the instructions here: http://www.oms.nysed.gov/sedref/home.html.

As noted previously, only the CEO may submit, but additional users may be entitled to the electronic application to enter building-level emergency response plan information for a school as follows:

1.  To enter a building-level emergency response plan for a school, an individual must have an account in SEDDAS that is associated with that school.
2.  For a public school:
  • the CEO of the public school district (Super Delegated Administrator or Super DA), or the Delegated/Entitlement Administrator (DEA) or the Delegated Administrator (DA) may create a new account and delegate access for this application to existing users in the school
  • the public school district Entitlement Administrator (EA) may delegate access for this application to existing users in the school (but cannot create new accounts)

If you have questions or problems accessing the business portal or the SED Monitoring and Vendor Performance System, please contact the SEDDAS helpdesk at [email protected] or the office of Student Support Services at [email protected]. If you have questions about the Building-Level Emergency Response Plan requirements, please contact  [email protected].
