Future economic leadership depends on green economy, says UN Chief
In a speech to business leaders, academics, and students, UN Secretary-General,
António Guterres, highlighted the growing role of green economy in shaping economies of the future.

uterres particularly emphasized the need for both national governments and other sectors, such as the private industry, to be engaged in the green transition, proposing that "Those that will be betting on the implementation of the Paris Agreement, on the green economy, will be the ones that have a leading role in the economy of the 21st century."

High-Level Political Forum

PAGE hosting High-Level Political Forum side Event

The High-level Political Forum, the United Nations' central platform for follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals, provides for the full and effective participation of all States Members of the United Nations and States members of specialized agencies. On July 17, PAGE and the government of Finland will host a side event at the High-Level Political Forum in New York titled,
Advancing the Sustainable Development Goals and Promoting Shared Prosperity: Alternative Approaches to Sustainable and Inclusive Growth. The event will explore how green economy approaches are already helping to advance the Sustainable Development Goals.

During June, South Africa celebrated Environment Month where PAGE participated in two key national events:
Sustainability Week
and the
Sustainable Industrialisation Forum
. These events provided opportunities for PAGE to reinforce institutional collaboration for improved green economy analysis and accelerated implementation and to furthermore share the work of PAGE in the country. At both events, PAGE's work in the country garnered interest from attending delegates who are awaiting the findings of the South Africa Green Economy Industry and Trade Assessment (SA-GEITA), which will be released later this month.

Over the past few months, PAGE has supported an initiative focused on South-South trade in environmental goods and services. The project is jointly sponsored by the Environment and Trade Hub of UN Environment and PRCEE and will be implemented under the framework of Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE). Through workshops, the initiative aims to help Jiangsu evaluate and exploit green trade opportunities, share experiences and best practices for green trade in developing countries, and explore the role of green trade in realizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Training helps Mongolia
harness
trade
opportunities on their path
to green economy
Throughout May, Mongolia strengthened its commitment to pursuing inclusive green economy with a renewed focus on green trade opportunities. The country's new initiative, "Harnessing Trade Opportunities through Inclusive Green Economy in Mongolia," focuses on engaging numerous sectors to increase sustainable production, incorporate best practices in the private sector, and intensify dialogue surrounding green trade. The initiative kicked-off with a 2-day training focusing on green trade concepts, eco-labeling, sustainability certification, tariff and non-tariff barriers, organic agriculture and market access for developing countries and was followed by an experts' consultative meeting that brought together government representatives, CEOs, and presidents of various organizations.

Better together: Mongolian universities join forces to prepare students for green economy
As part of the initiative, 'Mongolian Universities for Green Development,' departments of economics and finance from different universities across Mongolia have picked up the concept of 'green development' and are now jointly exploring options for incorporating relevant approaches in their course offerings. The project has already fueled historic cross-university collaboration and has plans to scale-up with the support of PAGE. Beyond training a new generation of Mongolian green leaders, the participation of numerous universities reflects a broader change in the development agenda of the country, best encapsulated by Mongolia's Sustainable Development Vision and the National Green Development Policy.

PAGE's country work is starting in earnest in our two new partner countries, Guyana and Uruguay, with coordination meetings in Guyana and a planning and stocktaking mission in Uruguay planned for July.

Integrated Green Economy Modelling Workshop

On July 12, PAGE will host a workshop concentrated on building capacity for national planning through quantitative and macro-economic modelling. The workshop will
establish specific training needs within the field of modeling techniques in Peru and facilitate the discussion on how they can be made "greener" and adhere to integrated green economy modelling methodology.

GGKP Annual Conference
27-28 November 2017 - Washington DC, USA
On November 27 - 28, 2017, the Fifth Green Growth Knowledge Platform (GGKP) Annual Conference will be hosted by the World Bank in Washington DC. This year's topic is sustainable infrastructure and will take stock of recent advances and research challenges in green growth infrastructure.

The UN Environment Assembly, the world's highest-level decision-making body on the environment, will gather in Nairobi, Kenya, from 4-6 December 2017 under the overarching theme of pollution.
This year's Assembly will be a
sustainable and climate-neutral
event. It aims to deliver a number of tangible commitments to end the pollution of our air, land, waterways, and oceans, and to safely manage our chemicals and waste.
