Water Safety Tips
As temperatures rise, Folsom's lakes, river, and pools are popular destinations for outdoor fun. If you're heading to the water this summer, keep these safety tips in mind.
Everyone should wear a life jacket. Whether you are fishing, boating, swimming or just wading, a properly-fitted life jacket is a must (and is the law for children under the age of 13 who are on a moving recreational vessel).
Learn how to swim. Even with life jackets, it is important to know how to swim.
Never use rope swings or jump off of bridges. No matter how deep the water is, these activities can result in critical injuries or death.
Watch children at all times. Never leave a child unattended near the water or a pool.

Free Life Jacket Loaner Program
The Folsom Fire Department's Life Jacket Loaner Program provides Folsom residents with free daily and weekend rental of life jackets for all ages of children and adults. The life jackets are available at Folsom Fire Station 35 at 535 Glenn Drive; borrowers must provide a valid driver's license. For more information, contact the City of Folsom Fire Department at 916-984-2280.

Tips for a Water-Wise Summer
Summer officially begins June 21, and we have some great tips on how to have a beautiful landscape that is also uses water wisely.
  • Dig in before turning on: The best way to tell if you need to turn on the sprinklers is by testing. Use a hand shovel to dig into the soil. The soil should be moist at least three or four inches deep to ensure that the water is reaching the root zone of the plants.
  • Install a WaterSense-labeled "smart" sprinkler timer to adjust the watering schedule for you. These controllers use local weather conditions, soil type, sun exposure (such as shade vs. full sun) and plant type to determine the water needs of plants. As conditions change, the controller adjusts the amount of water plants and lawn receive.
  • Try the Sacramento Region Smart Sprinkler Scheduler at BeWaterSmart.info. This tool allows visitors to enter information about their landscape (such as plant materials, soil type and sun exposure) and receive a custom watering schedule based upon the weather and local watering guidelines.
  • Let your grass grow. Taller grass shades the soil, keeping it cool and reducing the rate of evaporation. And when you let your grass grow taller, it develops a more extensive root system with increased drought tolerance.
  • Water early in the day to allow water to soak into the soil and avoid losing it to evaporation. And remember to follow your water provider's watering guidelines and recommendations.

A Cool New Way to Enjoy the Folsom Aquatic Center
Rent one of the Aquatic Center's new cabanas and enjoy the luxury of your own private furnished space. Full and half-day rentals are available, and an Aquatic Center host will provide you and your cabana group with Poolside Café service. Make your reservation today by calling 916-355-8318.

Save a Buck!
Visit the Folsom Zoo Sanctuary this month and save on admission fees. Starting July 1, the Zoo Sanctuary's admission fees will increase by $1 per age category. This increase will help offset the rising costs of food, veterinary care, and other supplies for the animals. The Zoo Sanctuary is located at 403 Stafford Street; summer hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Make sure to stop in and visit new animal resident Davey the black-tail deer and all of the other amazing animals.
