Growing Healthy Soil Workshops yielding healthy impact in community

Lead poisoning persists as a serious issue for our community and patients. A less well-known risk lies in our soil. As many people grow food in their yards and gardens, both children and adults may be at risk for breathing or eating lead in soil. Growing Healthy Soil for Healthy Communities aims to address this issue through a series of workshops that teach people how to improve soil, get free soil tests, learn safe gardening tactics and know where to go for help if there is indeed lead in your soil. Sixteenth Street's Department of Environmental Health is a key player, among many, running the workshops and interventions in our community. In 2015 and 2016, over 180 adults and children participated in the workshops and 65 households were tested and received landscape interventions.
DHS joins Sixteenth Street, the Milwaukee Health Care Partnership and other Milwaukee FQHCS for tours and discussion

Linda Seemeyer, Secretary, Michael Heifetz, Medicaid Director, Jennifer Malcore, DHS Policy Director and Nick DiMeo, DHS Milwaukee Policy Advisor, joined Sixteenth Street, the Milwaukee Health Care Partnership and other Milwaukee health center leaders for a tour and discussion. The DHS visitors toured our Chavez location and had a chance to sit down with our leadership to talk through important issues affecting our work. We thank our DHS visitors for giving this time and attention to our patients and communities.
Intensive Outpatient Program launched at Sixteenth Street - Waukesha

Sixteenth Street - Waukesha recently launched an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) to further address the opioid epidemic in Waukesha. The program consists of group therapy three times a week, for three hours a session, incorporating intensive support, counseling and medication monitoring. Through the combination of care from both the medical and behavioral health provider, participants receive holistic treatment that fosters long term recovery and success. Participants usually spend four to six weeks in the program, lowering the number of hours they attend as they feel improvement and require less support.

Determination.

As of February of last year, I weighed
334 pounds. I now weigh under 300 pounds and lost almost 100 inches (3-5 clothing sizes).

I started this weight loss journey for a few reasons. The first reason is because of the progression of my diabetes and how diabetes has affected my family. My father passed away last year after having had both feet amputated. My mom has diabetes. My brothers have diabetes and are very undisciplined. I am very disciplined. That's the second reason. My discipline and my determination. When I decide to do something I completely commit. When I decided to quit smoking, I just stopped cold turkey and haven't smoked since. It's the same with my weight loss...

US Water Alliance: An Equitable Water Future

There are few things as tedious as getting the gym bag ready or pulling on those sneakers for a boring run through the neighborhood. The first few times may be a breeze, but the novelty soon wears off and it's back to just being exercise again.
Two of the biggest factors   that cause health and fitness resolutions to fly out the window are boredom and a lack of time. But what if the time spent on health and fitness can be combined with fun events that will forge stronger relationships?
