YLWD Isn't the Only Agency Overcharging for Water
By Ed Rakochy, Yorba Linda Taxpayers Association
|
In Yorba Linda, we've been fighting against unnecessary water rate hikes from Yorba Linda Water District. Just two years ago, the district board approved a $25 monthly water rate hike, which was extremely excessive. I joined with the Yorba Linda Taxpayers Association in an effort to rescind the rate increase. When the board refused, our community effectively voted to unseat four of the five members.
I recently learned that excessive water rates aren't just a local issue, but a major problem throughout Southern California. Last month, the Yorba Linda Taxpayers Association and I met with elected officials from San Diego County, who requested a meeting to share their concerns about water rates imposed by the giant, LA-based, Metropolitan Water District (MWD). For those not familiar with MWD, they are known to be a bloated, inefficient government agency that has a history of poor financial management MWD's main purpose is to provide water from outside Southern California and deliver it to local water districts that deliver it to us.
What we learned was shocking. MWD overcharged Southern California water users over $847 million between 2012 and 2015. Our residents and businesses in Orange County overpaid a whopping $122 million of that amount! This is money that MWD collected over and above all its budgeted expenses, meaning one thing. MWD has been setting its water rates way higher than necessary.
Here's what's even more egregious. Rather than saving the over-collected money for a rainy day, MWD chose to spend it and more. MWD overspent its budget by
$1.2 billion between 2013 and 2016. And, when you overspend, you need to borrow. So MWD borrowed
$900 million last year in unplanned debt to restore its minimum cash reserves. The end result of all this overcharging and overspending is that MWD's water rates have
doubled over the past 10 years. And, here's where it hits home. The Yorba Linda Water District has passed all these unnecessary rate hikes on to us! Worse yet, Orange County's MWD board representatives voted in favor of these decisions without one word of protest.

Yorba Linda Buzz
June 7- Lakeview bridge FYI. Had a surprise this morning crossing the bridge southbound on my way to the 91. There were 2 motorcycle officers hidden behind a sign ticketing speeders. Believe it or not the speed limit is 35 mph on the bridge, although I didn't see it posted anywhere there is a sign before La Palma stating "exiting 35 mph zone". Perfect place for a speed trap, makes no sense to have a 35 mph zone exiting a bridge going into an industrial area.
