Pandemic influenza- emergence of strains from the avian and swine population increase risk of human infection and possibly sustained human to human transmission.

Malaria - reduction of mosquito populations through changing environmental factors and perhaps agricultural practices could reduce infection rates

Natural Disasters - can lead to losses in food production and distribution. Droughts leading to food insecurity and malnutrition are often associated with outbreaks of disease, while heat waves cause excess mortality, particularly among the elderly and livestock.

Yellow fever and other viral hemorrhagic fevers to look out for include Ebola and Marburg Virus Disease, Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever, Rift Valley Fever, Lassa Fever, Hantavirus diseases, and Dengue Fever - most with an animal host in its life cycle.

Malnutrition - stemming from inadequate agriculture and distribution systems to sustain the population leading to shortages of food will remain a serious challenge.

Food poisoning - from inappropriate food handling and lack of refrigeration.
Despite the potential impact of viral threats, the world remains unable to predict when, where, or from what species the next emerging virus will break out. In February 13, 2018, as part of its National One Health Platform, Tanzania launched its One Health Coordination Desk and National One Health Strategic Plan. These actions underscore national commitment to strengthen mechanisms for prevention, detection and response to outbreaks. OH-SMART - One Health Systems Mapping and Analysis Resource Toolkit
The OH-SMART mapping tool was developed to assist agencies in coordinating effective outbreak response planning. OH-SMART gives people from different disciplines a practical way to apply business process improvement and participatory leadership methods to their multi-sectoral system. It has also been used for "After Action" outbreak response, Multi-sectoral Preparedness and Response Planning, and Developing One Health Teams. The University of Minnesota and USDA have facilitated OH-SMART workshops to support One Health systems strengthening in over 30 US states and 12 countries.

In February, 2018 the One Health Unit of the Institute of Global Health (Faculty of Medicine, University of Geneva), in collaboration with Professor Jakob Zinsstag of the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, published a description of the first global 'flipped' classroom in One Health that was conducted in Geneva and Basel in July 2017. This innovative MOOC (massive open online course) gathered 12 Swiss and international learners to work
in interdisciplinary teams on specific public/global health challenges at the human-animal-ecosystem interface. They were supported by experts from academia and international organisations (e.g. World Health Organization). A novel project-based learning and research model arising from MOOCs was successfully created, which offers opportunities for global education and research addressing real world challenges utilising a One Health approach."

The U.S. National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) has launched a new large-scale Environmental Health Matters Initiative
to work across disciplines and sectors in developing lasting solutions to improve health today and for generations to come. Though not mentioned in this announcement, it is hoped that the NASEM will include animals, both wild and domestic and their impact on the environment and environmental impacts on them, in its considerations.

U.S. National Pet Health Survey - Updates
