An analysis of cardiac injury markers in patients with OSA who sustain an episode of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) may contribute to a better understanding of the interactions and impact of OSA in subjects with ACS. We compared peak cardiac troponin I (cTnI) levels in patients with OSA and patients without OSA who were admitted for ACS.
Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) affects 1% of the adult global population and is a leading cause of death worldwide, in which one-third of all deaths are due to cardiovascular disease (CVD). OSA is a highly prevalent breathing disorder that affects at least 10% of middle-aged men and 3% of middle-aged women. OSA has been associated with major cardiovascular morbidity and mortality and is likely to be an independent risk factor for CVD. Patients with ACS are at an increased risk for fatal and nonfatal cardiac events, and the prevalence of OSA has been reported to be as high as 65.7% in patients admitted for ACS. However, the impact of OSA on ACS severity and prognosis is mostly unknown...

Join the ATS Dental Sleep Medicine Interest Group and Chair, James E. Metz, DDS at the 2018 ATS Conference this year!
Sunday, May 20, 2018
6:30 pm to 8:30 pm
Manchester Grand Hyatt, Balboa B & C, second level, Seaport Tower
The goal of the Interest Group is to bring together dentists with a strong interest in dental sleep medicine and align them with the Assembly on Sleep and Respiratory Neurobiology, so that they may discuss common interests that will benefit patients worldwide. The Group's objectives are as follows:
- To further identify research priorities and outcome studies in the area of oral appliances
- To collaborate with the Assembly on Sleep and Respiratory Neurobiology in the development of joint statements
Friday, May 18, 2018, 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Room 10 (Upper Level) - San Diego Convention Center
Description: This hands-on course consists of a morning interactive didactic session, case-based break-out sessions and a final afternoon session with opportunities to experiment with different advanced PAP devices. The focus is the management of sleep disordered breathing incorporating recent findings and addressing current gaps in guidelines. The lectures will review pathophysiology and epidemiology, but primarily explore the different treatment approaches and PAP modalities, including OSA with auto-PAP, central sleep apnea and sleep-related hypoventilation sub-types. Participants will next break into small groups of 10 for case studies (selecting 3 cases out of 6 to discuss) with faculty leader. Finally they will have four hands-on experiences with different advanced modality PAP devices.
*Please note: It is possible to register as a non-member for the postgraduate course only.
Continental breakfast and box lunch included. Attendance is limited.

You are invited: Chicago SFOT Lecture
The New Frontier in Interdisciplinary Dentofacial Therapy Course
Join Drs Brian Vence, George Mandelaris and Rick Roblee in Chicago
for a two-day course to discuss the biology and benefits of implementing SFOT in advanced interdisciplinary therapy from a surgical, orthodontic and restorative perspective.
Specialists are encouraged to bring their interdisciplinary team to this course.
When:
Friday, April 13 to Saturday, April 14, 2018
Where: Medinah Country Club, Medinah, IL
Patients that want more ideal facial esthetics and stomatognathic function, may choose to have the interdisciplinary team utilize SFOT to alter the dentoalveolar bone and optimally position the roots of the teeth within the face. Space may be appropriated to enable the restorative dentist to create natural tooth size and morphology in the worn, eroded or otherwise altered dentition. Surgical, orthodontic and restorative perspectives will be presented to challenge the team to move beyond traditional interdisciplinary therapies into a new frontier for enhanced outcomes.
