SUMMER PROGRAMMING 2017

Story Hour for Grades K - 5th

Pre-K Story Time (3-5 year olds)
Wednesdays: 10:00-11:00
July 5, 12, 19, 26, August 2 & 9

Story time with Martha will include songs, stories, activities, crafts.

Grades 6 & up

Teens and tweens can participate in a special independent summer reading program. Read books, listen to books, read graphic novels, volunteer, spark your interest in stories of your own choosing and accrue points toward prizes. Sign-up by emailing [email protected] and we will send you everything you'll need to participate.
 

Battle of the Books Team
(entering 9th-12th grades)
Teens should also consider joining our Battle of the Books Team. Battle of the books is a program in which teenagers entering 9th-12th grades participate in a reading and trivia game competition. All the students can read all or several of the selected five books. We provide you with your own set of the battle books. The reading starts right now and continues throughout the summer. During the summer our team will meet to familiarize ourselves with the books, and have mini battles. On August 19th there is a large competition between all the participating area libraries. Babysitting Workshop  with Amanda Tucker
June 27
10:00-2:00

In this introduction babysitting course students will learn interview tips, communication skills, ages and stages of young babies and toddlers, safety and first aid tips, and feeding and caring for children. A simple test will be administered at the completion of the course and certificates will be distributed. Amanda Tucker, the class instructor, holds a degree in Special Ed., Early Education and Child Psychology. Students should bring a notebook, pen, and a lunch with them. Registration required. ( For ages 10 and up) Register 

Exploring Connections between Art and Literature (clay)

July 6
3:30-4:30

In today's program participants will make a sculpture of a fish using clay and hand building techniques. Jill Obrig will read the book A Fish out of Water by Helen Palmer, illustrated by P.D. Eastman (Dr. Seuss). Jill taught art at Rondout Valley Middle School and Kerhonkson Elementary School for over 18 years. She now works as an artist/teacher at many different venues in the Hudson Valley. (for children in grades 2-4) Register 

Telling Stories through Music & Movement

July 13
10:00-11:00

Join Ms. Beth for some story-telling, music, and dance! This program is a basic introduction of dance and stretch combined with sharing of rhythm instruments and some accompaniment of music from around the world. Beth Jacobs has developed songs and dances over the years as a music and movement teacher. (for children 3-5 years old) Register 

Exploring Connections between Art and Literature (masks)

July 13
3:30-4:30

In today's program participants will start with the book There's a Nightmare in my Closet by Mercer Mayer. Participants work on Monster Masks using techniques with colored paper, scissors, glue and oil pastels. Jill taught art at Rondout Valley Middle School and Kerhonkson Elementary School for over 18 years. She now works as an artist/teacher at many different venues in the Hudson Valley. Exploring Connections between Art and Literature (figure)

July 27
3:30-4:30

In today's program participants will read the book The Seven Chinese Brothers by Mou-sien Tseng and Jean Tseng, and will be introduced to Giacometti style metal sculptures. Participants will create their own figurative sculptures using aluminum foil. Jill taught art at Rondout Valley Middle School and Kerhonkson Elementary School for over 18 years. Mad Science --Summertime Rocket Show

July 24
10:00-11:00

Take to the skies as this introduction to rocketry explains how and why rockets fly. You'll witness real model rocket launches that soar several hundreds of feet into the air and deploy parachutes for their return. ( for children of all ages) Register

Pony Tales with Cori Nichols

August 3
10:00-11:00

HolyMac, a miniature Shetland Pony, courtesy of Hudson Valley HorsePlay, in Kerhonkson is coming to the library. HolyMac's visit will offer all ages an introduction to ponies across multiple dimensions. There will be stories read, a sign language interpreter will also be on site to share stories with the hearing impaired. Any children interested in participating as readers should inquire at the library desk. EPL has a wealth of books and stories related to horses and advanced reading is encouraged! HolyMac is no stranger to children, field trips and special events. The 12 year-old, 34 inch mare is part of HorsePlay's equine experiential learning team. (for children of all ages) Register
