Wellesley Books Newsletter
  July 5th, 2017
Summertime . . . and the reading is easy!  Is there anything better than lying on the beach, soaking up the sun, listening to the cry of the gulls, and reading a fantastic book?  This is the time to pick up those great reads for your vacation, and we have written and published two special bookmarks, one with adult recommendations for fiction and non-fiction, and one for the best kids' books this summer.  Each one is full of thoughtful recommendations from our staff, and we have the books placed on dedicated tables so they're easy to find.  If you need that perfect hammock book, stop by and grab one of our new bookmarks or check out the Staff Recommendations section of the store for your next great read.
July Jubilation
Saturday, July 15th, from 10:00 am till 4:00 pm, Wellesley presents its annual July Jubilation.  We will be featuring great gifts at remarkable prices, but there is a lot more to the Jubilation than fabulous shopping.  There will be roving musicians, sing-a-longs, face painting, magicians, a dunk tank, a petting zoo, a performance by the Wellesley Symphony, stray pet adoptions, and much more.  Did we mention the free parking?  Yes, free parking!  Bring the whole family and walk the streets of our beautiful home town, enjoy all the great activities, and, of course, shop till you drop!  It's always a great time.
Bill's Book Group For Guys

by Denis Johnson

This National Book Award-winner scathingly riffs on the Vietnam War, disinformation programs, disillusion and atonement, and the many personalities of Americans as seen through the eyes of one CIA operative.  It is brilliant and epic in scope.

Join Bill's Book Group for Guys for a relaxed evening in the store discussing a specially-chosen book while enjoying a beer, glass of wine, or select single-malt whiskey.  $25 buys the book and a ticket to the event.
Betty's Lunchtime Book Group

by Nathan Hill

Betty Sudarsky, unparalleled bookseller and experienced book club leader, chooses each book carefully and leads the discussion.  Bring your own lunch if you like; Betty supplies snacks, drinks, and insight.  No need to sign up; drop-ins are welcome.
Bookseller Recommendations

William Recommends:

The Essex Serpent by Sarah Perry
This is a pitch-perfect modern take on the Victorian novel, channeling both Sarah Waters and Jane Austen.  A weathered widow rediscovers a love for natural science as she attempts both to track down a mythical beastie in Essex, England, and to fend off a budding attachment to a local minister.  Science and religion clash in a thrilling manner in this beautifully written novel, brimming with fully-formed, fascinating characters.

Gillian Recommends:

The Graybar Hotel by Curtis Dawkins
This extraordinary book is unlike anything I've ever read. The author received his MFA in fiction writing but is now serving a life term in prison for murder. He writes about existence behind the walls of the "Graybar Hotel," his eloquent vignettes illuminating the complexity of retaining one's humanity under the worst of circumstances.

Phyllis Recommends:

The Confusion Of Languages by Siobhan Fallon
This novel tells of the consequences of cultural misunderstandings between a United States military officer's wife and her host country's male population. Fallon gives us a stark representation of expatriate life in the Middle East from the viewpoint of the women who stay behind in a foreign environment when their husbands deploy. While all the action in this fast-paced novel occurs in a single day, the reflections of the main characters provide color and depth.

Peter Recommends :

The Long Drop by Denise Mina
Basing her story on a notorious true crime, one of a spree of violent murders that rocked Glasgow in the late 1950s, Mina burrows deep into the psyches of the two characters closest to the crime. William Watt is an aspiring local businessman who has been accused of the brutal murder of his wife and daughter. Peter Manuel is the vaguely charismatic local hoodlum with aspirations of his own. These two spend a long winter night traipsing from pub to pub, each pursuing his own agenda. Intercut with vivid prison and courtroom scenes, Mina gives us a fascinating account of criminal psychology in action.

Dog of the Week
Bruiser

Bruiser is a 14 year old rescue dog who was the very last dog adopted from the shelter on Martha's Vineyard before it closed. He had been rescued from neglectful owners and returned twice before his current owner spotted him on Petfinder. She took a ferry out to adopt him, and now he feels like the luckiest dog in the world. Welcome to Wellesley Books, Bruiser.
