ODNR Utilizes Lake Drain Proactively

ODNR UPDATE:   While the filter berm is being constructed, ODNR has utilized winter pool as the target lake elevation for Lake White. This ensures the safety and stability of the dam and the foundation soils.  As stat ed throughout this process, ODNR's primary concern is dam safety.  While the primary tool in keeping the lake at the winter pool target elevation is the spillway gates, the water control plan may utilize operation of the lake drain proactively ahead of storm events with significant rainfall. Recent storms have resulted in significant rainfall  in the area.  In these situations, the lake drain will continue to be used to keep the lake at the winter pool target elevation.
There may also be some concerns that the lake drain discharge is contributing to the elevated water level downstream or the saturation of the soil around the dam, and thus negatively impacting the filter berm construction. Under normal conditions, this is not the case - the lake drain outlet discharges directly into Pee Pee Creek. Unfortunately, during periods when the Scioto River is high, Pee Pee Creek does back up to Lake White Dam, inundating the area with backwater. During these high-water level events, the lake drain discharge may flow into the backwater downstream of the dam, but the lake drain discharge is not a significant cause of elevated water downstream of the dam or ground water saturation.
