Reflection...The Courage to Show Up

"Courage is the most important of all the virtues
because without courage,
you can't practice any other virtue consistently."
~ Maya Angelou

Beloved community -

I write this reflection with much in my heart.  We are still reeling after the (latest) mass gun murder in Florida of our children, revelations continue to emerge in the Russia investigation, the Olympics are on with all the stories of persistence, and this week we are honoring the day (February 25) that the first Blackamerican became an United States Senator, Republican Hon. Hiram Rhodes Revels.

Our service this Sunday will celebrate the courage it takes to SHOW UP:
to protest, to risk failure, to risk being the first to do something, to risk building - as singer Jewel says, "a life uncommon."

Please join us.

In loving blessing -
Chava

PS - Don't forget this Sunday at 9 AM we will start our reflective study of the introduction and chapter one of Karen Armstrong's book,  Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life.  Even if you haven't started reading the book, you are welcome to join us - it is important to take time in our lives to reflect on compassion.

Sunday Service
Sunday, February 25 -  Rabbi Chava Bahle, Hal Gurian
10:30 AM Service
"Persist in Learning: The Issues are Momentous"

This date, February 25, is the birthday of Senator (Rev.) Hiram Rhodes Revels, the first Blackamerican to be elected to Congress.  A powerful speaker because of his preaching background, Sen. Revels, who was born and lived as a free man, is a social and racial justice hero.

Come and hear his words, still so relevant today, as we reflect on the state of racial justice in America.

Sundays in February ~  preK - 8th grade

We are working on some exciting projects in our "UU & YOU at Hogwarts" curriculum!  We are considering poverty - particularly  in our region - and will be continuing this unit through February.   We're making scarves to donate to Safe Harbor and learning about the needs of our less fortunate neighbors.
This Sunday is the last Sunday to bring in items for the
Goodwill Housing Support Services Wish List!

The donation tub is located in the hallway near the kitchen,
and a copy of the wish list can be found there or
via this link  https://goo.gl/cxxSWf

Suggested reading for families/parents this month!

Our book this month is once again connected to our "Hogwarts" program
- dealing with poverty & hunger - and this book is based on a true story!

"Katie's Cabbage" by Katie Stagliano  is the inspirational true story of how Katie Stagliano, a third grader from Summerville, South Carolina, grew a forty-pound cabbage in her backyard and donated it to help feed 275 people at a local soup kitchen.  In her own words, Katie shares the story of the little cabbage seedling and the big ideas of generosity and service that motivated her to turn this experience into Katie's Krops, a national youth movement aimed at ending hunger one vegetable garden at a time.  https://goo.gl/Ewu4XS
