Guest Speaker to Focus on Local Gov't. Finance

As a reminder, MCEDC's annual meeting will be held on Thursday, March 8, 2018, at 11:30 a.m. at SCI REMC's corporate office in Martinsville. Come enjoy lunch catered by Mooresville's Ralph and Ava's as we listen to our guest speaker, Jim Higgins, discuss local government finances. Student Safety is No. 1: School districts discuss security after shooting

The Feb. 14 school shooting in Parkland, Florida, which claimed the lives of 17 students and teachers, has brought the discussion of school safety to the forefront of the nation's attention.

For the administrations of Morgan County's different school districts, keeping children and staff safe is always a top priority. That protection comes in the form of locked doors during the school day, cameras, radios, safety plans and constant contact with law enforcement. However, each school system has its own unique challenges and tactics.

'Companion Care' Business Opens Downtown

A ribbon-cutting ceremony can be a momentous occasion for a new business owner.

On Tuesday, representatives from the Martinsville Chamber of Commerce and city were in downtown to celebrate a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Hope in Faith's Companion Care.

Faith Arvin, owner of the home health care business, said she has been interested in helping people since she was a child.

"When I was younger, my sister passed away," Arvin said.

Her sister Hope was born premature. The name of the business is a combination of her and Hope's names.

Arvin's father passed away when she was 8 years old from a brain aneurysm.
"That just really inspired me to do more," Arvin said.

CITY OF MARTINSVILLE

The City of Martinsville, was founded in 1822 and is the County Seat of Morgan County, Indiana. From 1888 until 1968, visitors sought out the many artesian mineral water health spas, which were called "Sanitariums" for health benefits. On top of what used to be the National Sanitarium a refurbished neon sign still displays "Martinsville City of Mineral Water" as it did then. In 1899, Eugene Shireman, started Grassyfork Fisheries, giving Martinsville the nickname, "Goldfish Capital of the World." Some of his fisheries can be seen today throughout Shireman Estates Subdivision.
