March 2018
February was a big month for community outreach as we continue to build on our commitment to serve the entire region. You may have noticed the wrap on the outside of The Desert Sun on February 23 that showcased our campus and many of the events taking place on your local four-year, public university campus!

If you were out for the beautiful weather, you may have seen us at the Concert Series at The Gardens on El Paseo, hosted on February 17. We appreciate the partnership with The Gardens on El Paseo, as the event helped to raise necessary funds for our students.
Another partner is hosting a great wine dinner to benefit our University Legacy Scholarship Fund on March 16. WineWomen PSP are hosting a wine dinner at Bellatrix featuring wines from Joseph Filippi Winery & Vineyards. To make your reservation and support the campus, call 760-880-5010. We are appreciative of all of our event sponsors including our campus as a nonprofit beneficiary – your partnership is making a difference in the lives of so many students at the PDC!
In February we also hosted our first Adaptive Leadership conference designed by Dr. Thomas McWeeney and hosted by Agua Caliente, the Southern California Association of Governments, ESRI and E3P3. The conference focused on leadership attributes needed today to make decisions in the face of “big data.” Featured speakers included Sandra Hutchins, Sheriff, Orange County; Dale Brant, Former Director, Naval Criminal Investigative Service; Dale Watson, Former Executive Assistant Director for Counterterrorism, FBI; Hasan Ikhrata, Executive Director, Southern California Association of Governments; Damian Spangrud, Director for ESRI; and Deborah Robertson, Mayor of the City of Rialto. Each spoke about how their organizations needed to change to adapt their leadership model in the face of the increasing digital presence and information collected in their organizations. The event was a sell-out and we are looking forward to similar conferences in the future.
The annual Emeriti Society “Leap into Polo” event was held at the Empire Polo Club on February 25 with more than 100 attendees enjoying field-side brunch and comradery with other retired faculty and staff and alumni associations from the area. This annual event features a champagne divot stomp and hat contest. Gathering our learning communities together is one of the great parts of our Emeriti Society and they are hosting hiking, wine and food, and film special interest groups throughout the season.
Please join us in March for our “All things Rat Pack” line-up of events including:

  • Friday, March 2, at 7:00 p.m. - “Ocean’s 11” (1960) Movie and Discussion

Our campus is full of activities for the entire community and we hope you will come out and join us at the PDC!

We're happy to report that The California State University has approved the master plan for the CSUSB Palm Desert Campus as we seek to serve the growing population in the Coachella Valley.

The master plan seeks to transform the university from a suburban commuter campus to a residential campus to serve an estimated enrollment of 8,000 full-time equivalent students. The expansion will be built around the existing core of buildings, and include the construction of student housing.
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Cal State San Bernardino’s Palm Desert Campus is accepting registrations for its spring quarter of classes , which begin in March, April and June. Some courses run three consecutive weeks, and others run six weeks. Topics include the arts, history, literature, economics, natural sciences, philosophy and more. Several film courses will also be offered.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute is a program designed for adults 50 and older who want to experience learning for the fun of it. OLLI offers non-credit, university-level courses, but without the grades, tests or homework. Membership is open to mature adults who enjoy learning, regardless of their educational background. Annual membership is $75; then members choose as many courses as they like and pay for those courses on an individual basis. Six-week courses are $50 each; three-week courses are $30.
