Embarking on an Adventure!
March 2018

This month, I am off on a great adventure!

My journey will take me to Israel, where I will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Israel Center for Mind-Body Medicine that I co-founded in 1998. More on that in a moment.

I will also be taking an amazing trip to Bhutan, which is referred to as the Buddhist "Happiness Kingdom." Bhutan has pioneered and embraced the philosophy of "Gross National Happiness" where development is measured using a holistic approach of well-being that is not merely based on gross domestic product. Bhutan is a landlocked country bordered by India, China, Nepal and Tibet. With my long-standing interest in meditation, I am truly excited to visit this remarkable land. The photo below is a sneak peak at where I'm traveling in Bhutan. I hope to share insights, highlights and experiences from my journey in upcoming newsletters.

I will both start, and end, this journey in Israelwhere I made my home many years ago. Returning to Israel and the Israel Center for Mind-Body Medicine, which has continued to grow and thrive over these past 20 years, is both personally and professionally rewarding. In some ways the Center is a culmination of an idea and a seed that was planted over 35 years ago.
My dear friend and colleague, Dr. Nimrod Sheinman, and I learned early in our association that we shared an interest in yoga, mindfulness, guided imagery, mind-body medicine and psychotherapy. In 1996, I was invited to Israel to speak and teach about mindfulness and mind-body medicine. I took my first trip to Israel. I connected with Nimrod, who lives in Israel, while I was there, and as he and I reflected on the interest expressed in the topic, we could see that there was both a great interest, and a pressing need for this material to be disseminated in Israel.

With that, we decided to start the Israel Center for Mind-Body Medicine in Ramat Hasharon, Israel. I pulled up stakes and moved my life to Israel to pursue this ambitious goal. I remained to get the center off the ground, and eventually returned to the United States, leaving Nimrod at the helm of our wonderful center.
Today, just as we envisioned 20 years ago, the Center is thriving with an active holistic clinic as well as providing classes, workshops and trainings for the public and health care professionals. It has recently expanded to double the space to accommodate the increasing interest and demand for its many programs. It warms my heart to see the Center thriving and changing lives!

I have been invited back to the Center, as one of its founders, to offer a 4-hour workshop as part of the 20th anniversary celebration. I am deeply honored for the opportunity to share my insights on healing gleaned from my 34 years in practice and teaching.
Both Nimrod and I have moved on from the Center and have pursued our unique passions and interests. As my exploration of mindfulness and mind-body-medicine has deepened over the years, it has evolved and led me to focus on how biography becomes biology, or as I put it: connecting the cell and the self in the healing process. I specialize in working with the wounded inner child as part of the healing journey. I have also come to focus on mentoring wounded healers/health care practitioners to integrate the growing evidence of the effects of childhood trauma in treating stress and chronic disease.

Dr Sheinman has gone on to become an expert in mindfulness in education, teaching workshops and speaking on that topic all over the world. It is interesting to me that ultimately, our passions led us both to focus on the child as a key component of healing. Nimrod is on the front lines, working to cultivate mindfulness based techniques for children, in the hopes of creating kids who grow up with more coping skills and facilitating a reduction in the negative effects of stress on mind-body health, and I have focused on healing the wounded inner child within each of us, throughout the lifespan, as an important component of the healing process and treating various chronic diseases.

My heart is full as I embark on this journey 'home' and into new territory. I look forward to sharing with you upon my return.

May you be happy and at peace,
May all beings be free from suffering.
Make sure and check my event calendar regularly for details on all my upcoming classes, lectures, workshops and Webinars.
