Career Corner - Networking via AlumniFire and LinkedIn

Plan to dedicate time during the remainder of the term to network via AlumniFire and LinkedIn.  AlumniFire is an online professional networking and mentoring tool for Ohio State alumni, students and staff to exchange industry expertise and career advice. AlumniFire opens doors to fellow Buckeyes in the real world. The system is easy to use and those registered have communicated that they want to help Ohio State students and alumni. The assistance they're willing to provide will be visible from their profile. LinkedIn is the largest networking platform. Although, not a mentoring platform like AlumniFire, 

LinkedIn can be used to connect with alumni. After you complete your LinkedIn profile, you can use the See Alumni function to access a list of OSU graduates. Type "The Ohio State University" in the search box, then click See Alumni to access a list of OSU graduates based on location, job function, or major and request to link to them to initiate a networking connection.

More Ways to Network and Informational Interviewing
In addition to using AlumniFire and LinkedIn, talking with family members, friends and professionals in your network about their work history or place of employment are key steps in exploring career options. Ask questions that allow you to find out about jobs that fit your interests, learn more about the realities of working for a particular company/organization and tap into "insider information" regarding anticipated job openings. "Meet the Prof" - Justin D'Arms, Department of Philosophy

Join other arts and sciences students for free pizza and informal conversation with Dr. Justin D'Arms, professor and chair, Department of Philosophy.  His research interests include moral theory, metaethics, reasons and rationality, philosophy of emotion and evolutionary theory. Presented by the College of Arts and Sciences Student Council.

Student Spotlight - Tyler Webb

Tyler Webb and Dr. Mansoor

Tyler Webb is a graduating senior with majors in microbiology and history.  His long goal is to attend medical school while serving in the Army.  While in high school Tyler began his research at the Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute.  He later decided to switch from research in cell biology to history research.  His current thesis research focuses on the 37th Infantry "Buckeye" Division during World War II.  Read his blog to learn more about Tyler's journey as a historian, his study abroad, the important role of mentors and the benefits of conducting research.

Antarctica: Human Impact on a Fragile Ecosystem

Antarctica is the "coldest, windiest, driest, highest, quietest, most remote and least understood continent on earth." The South Polar Region has been an object of human speculation for millennia and a prize for explorers, scientists, hunters and geologists for more than two hundred years.  Towering icebergs, glacier-draped mountains and waddling penguins are just a few of the wonders.  Explore contemporary issues in Antarctica and the adjacent Southern Ocean, and learn how this otherworldly continent is so closely linked with the civilized world.  Program dates are 12/14/18 - 12/30/18.  Participants will enroll in a one credit pre-departure course during AU 18,  Read more. Undergraduate Neuroscience Outreach Organization 5K Walk/Run

The Undergraduate Neuroscience Outreach Organization (UNOO) is holding a Parkinson's 5K Walk/Run to raise funds for the Michael J. Fox Foundation. Five million people currently live with Parkinson's disease worldwide.  By participating in the Parkinson's 5K you will help raise money to speed the cure! Ohio State's Planetarium Offers Spring Shows

Ohio State's Arne Slettebak Planetarium, located in Smith Laboratory, is scheduling free spring shows in March.  The 63-seat 30-foot dome theater features a state-of-the-art digital projection system giving exquisite views of the night sky.  Free, but reservations are encouraged for guaranteed seating.  The Sky Tonight.  Pluto: The Distant, Icy World.

R.U.O.K.? Day 2018

This event, presented by Buckeye Campaign Against Suicide, works to spread knowledge about the resources available at Ohio State and around Columbus, as well as to engage students and faculty in important conversations about suicide prevention and mental health.  Free food, therapy dogs and free shirts.  Read more.

How Microscopy Can Help Understand Nanomaterials

Materials at the nanoscale behave in a fundamentally different way.  Using microscopes as 'nano-laboratories,' allows us to understand their structure at the atomic scale.  Amanda Petford-Long shares how this new understanding has applications for how we store, read and write information in computers.  Read more.

Amanda Petford-Long, Argonne Distinguished Fellow, Materials Science Division, Argonne National Laboratory; Northwestern University Professor Materials Science and Engineering, studies behavior of nanoscale materials with applications in information-storage technology.  She is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and the American Physical Society.

Jazz Ensemble Presents "The Music of Ladd McIntosh"

The Ohio State University Jazz Ensemble welcomes back guest artist, composer and arranger Ladd McIntosh to conduct the band.  The performance features a small portion of Mr. McIntosh's vast repertoire for big band, as well as a few guest alumni members from the award-winning 1967 band - The Ohio State University Jazz Workshop Band - with Wes Orr on trumpet and Byron Rooker on woodwinds.  This concert is free.  No ticket required.  Read more.

Department of Design Spring Exhibition

This exhibition features senior theses by undergraduates from each of the three programs: Industrial Design, Interior Design and Visual Communication Design.  The exhibition also includes projects from select MFA students from the Design Research and Development, Digital Animation and Interactive Media concentrations.  Read more and exhibit times here.
