A Gateway to Christ

June 2017

A Time and a Season
Summer is here! School is out and family vacations are on the agenda for many of us. Summer is traditionally a time for slowing down a bit; a time to relax a little more and rejuvenate our minds and bodies. Of course, this isn't as easy to accomplish as it was when we were kids but for me summer carries a reminder of a simpler time. In our churches, there is generally less activity during the summer months and the same is true of the Walk to Emmaus. In July, there will not be a newsletter or a community-wide Gathering but please don't let Emmaus slip from your thoughts. July would be a great opportunity for the Emmaus group in your church to have a local gathering and invite members of your congregation to come and learn a little about the Walk to Emmaus. We are now less than four months from Walk #79 so it is important to continue to pray and work to sponsor pilgrims. Preparations for the Walk are ongoing and team meetings will begin in July. If you are asked to serve please know that a lot of prayer has gone into the decision to make that call. Prayerfully consider answering yes. And as always, be in prayer for the teams that are forming, the pilgrims who will be attending, and this community.
This month there are a couple of events on the schedule. On June 17, the monthly Gathering will be held at Ft. Caroline United Methodist Church. This will be a great opportunity to share a meal, fellowship, and worship together before the July break. Then, on Saturday June 24, the community-wide leadership training will be held at Isle of Faith United Methodist Church. The time schedule is 8:30 am to 1:00 pm and it is open to anyone in the Emmaus community. This will be a good experience for all current and future weekend lay directors, assistant lay directors, spiritual directors, and anyone who is interested in learning more about what it takes to prepare for an Emmaus weekend.

I pray that each of you has a wonderful summer season and that you experience and appreciate all the blessings God has for you. Decolores!

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heaven: Ecclesiastes 3:1

Defined by Grace

Do you remember the emotions you felt while on your  Emmaus Walk? I ask this because I believe one of the biggest hurdles that we face today, is the weight we carry, to look, or act a certain way in order to be accepted in society. We feel anything that contradicts these often-self-imposed standard, become our faults. Though if we are not careful, these standards become idols in and of themselves. Over time we buy into the lies of this world, and our standards begin haunting us into a burden to which we were not created to bare, because we can never meet up to such standards. The weight to which I am referring to, is almost palatable during a Chrysalis flight. The emotion I am referring to is the freeing of the weight or heaviness, when you start realizing the magnitude of God's grace in your life? I think it is imperative to our journey to tap into those feelings from time to time, as a reminder that you are defined by grace, not the world. The world is hard on us, and if we are not careful, we begin to see ourselves, using worldly standards. These standards tell us that we are not good enough, not pretty enough, not smart enough, and the list goes on. This is a lie from Satan.

The reality is; your worth is not based on things seen, rather unseen. Your worth is based on the value God placed on you. I remember coming to a defining moment in my life, that I was not going to allow my past to control me any longer. I refused to be defined by my past. I believe I am writing this because God is telling someone today that you are not defined by your past, your failures, your mistakes. God wants someone to know that you are not valued by someone else's standards. As hard as you may try, your value is not found in your accomplishments, your looks, appearance or social status. Your value is not found in your possessions, marital or family status. There is nothing of worldly standards that can define your true value.
Your value is only found within its source, which is in Christ Jesus. Your value is forever engraved in the stone that is the Fathers love and He declares, "I am your and you are mine." And He affirms, "you will be my people, and I will be your God. "Jeremiah 30:22

You did not choose God, you might not have even chosen yourself, but God has chosen you (John  15:16). Not only are we chosen by God, we are purchased at a great cost. The next time the enemy tells you that you are worthless, remind him that your worth has been sealed forever in Christ love and mercy on the cross.

I can't speak for you, but I praise God that He does not love me based on my performance, religious effort, promises, family name or even my best intentions. In fact, in spite of your wounds, stains, imperfections and shame, He still chose you for himself. He chose you when you were dead in sin and couldn't even present yourself to Him as a worthy choice.

God chose you because He saw His image in you, the divine stamp woven into the fabric of your being when He created His masterpiece in and through you. And He decided you were worth a rescue mission of love that would require the death of His own Son. And it is within this truth alone, that your value rests. By grace you are a loved son, a loved daughter, of the Most-High. Satan will continually try to remind us of who you used to be, but Christ tells you who, and whom you are. It is through your value to God, that He loved you enough to place you into His story, crush your sin through His innocent sacrifice, setting you free and redeeming you forever. God told me that someone needed to be reminded, that grace defines you. DeColores

Music and Walk to Emmaus

Music for the purposes of praise is referenced over 500 times in the Bible. Some with voice, some with instruments, and some combined. Some are lifted up in merriment, some in bereavement. Sometimes we sing to God and sometimes, he sings to us! In any case, music and God have been tied together from Genesis to Revelation. It should be no surprise that music is such a vital part of our Walks whether you are a pilgrim or a servant. Because we offer it up to Him in worship, He moves within it to stir our souls. Each of us responds differently to songs and at different times. Many of us can single out a song from our Walk that was particularly meaningful. But if you polled the pilgrims from your Walk, I think you'll find many different songs are labeled as "favorite".
As a musician on team, we are asked to choose songs that will help set the foundation for the pilgrims on our weekend. As a veteran of a few Walks, I can tell you that songs I have chosen that I thought would be particularly impactful sometime never even got played. I've had Lay Directors and Spiritual Directors ask that certain songs be played at certain times or even be chosen as the "team song" and have seen these very uplifting songs lay a big fat goose egg. Why is that? The answer is simple. The Holy Spirit moves as the Holy Spirit wills. When we try to insert our noses in His business, we are frequently humbled. The lesson for the day is that worship is a personal connection between the individual and God. It can happen corporately but not without that personal connection. And for us musicians, when the Spirit leads us to play certain songs we can be certain that it will bear fruit in someone's heart and soul as that connection is made. When vanity tells us to do something different because we think we do a song particularly well, we frequently find that the only voice we hear is ours and when we finish, we hear crickets chirruping.
Being a worship leader for a Walk is serious business. As the community musicians, we are reminded frequently that we must put aside our selfish desires to be effective ministers. The motto for Emmaus servanthood is that "it is not about us". This is doubly so for our musicians. When we let our wants, desires, and selfish pride get in the way of our talent for worship, the whole community suffers. We become like false prophets preaching worldly values instead of humbling ourselves before God. We have the capacity to hinder spiritual growth or worse yet, prevent it! This is a very real trap for us. Talent can become vanity very easily. Before long, fame becomes the stumbling block that Satan uses to derail this very important ministry. It can also cause dissention within the community of musicians which also hinders the ministry. Paul reminds us that these things are fruits of the flesh, not of the Spirit. We must remain attuned to the Spirit just as any other minister must. And when we do, we get to see the Spirit spread like wildfire! There is no other feeling in the world that can compare to that.
So I ask that you pray for our musicians, especially those preparing for a Walk. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide them as they lead worship in team training and choose the songs that will go in the pilgrim's songbooks. Ask the Holy Spirit to work through them so that others may be touched and deepen their relationship with Christ. Pray the same for the musicians at the sendoffs, candlelight services, closings and fourth day gatherings. Lastly, pray for the musicians at the monthly gatherings. Their efforts are no less important to the health of our community of believers.

Sponsoring a Chrysalis Student

Thanks to God's faithfulness and the support of the Emmaus community, the Florida Crown Chrysalis Flights/Journeys in April and November 2016 and March 2017 were a great success!  Preparation is underway for the next Chrysalis Flight/Journey in September.  It will be held at Mandarin United Methodist Church, 11270 San Jose Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32223.

The lay directors Taylor Mathis and Ian Keane are selecting their teams and have begun training the members in preparation for Chrysalis Flight 34 and Journey 16. Girls' Flight Sept. 8-10                   Mandarin UMC
Boys' Flight Sept. 15-17                 Mandarin UMC RUSH/4 th Day Gathering Sept. 23rd                   Mandarin UMC

As an interdenominational, interracial, and international movement, Chrysalis is a unique form of ministry for youth and young adults which grew out of The Walk to Emmaus movement and shares many common features. Like the Walk you attended, Chrysalis begins with a three-day short course in Christianity.

Chrysalis is offered for two age levels.  Chrysalis Flight is for young people ages 13 through the high school years.  Chrysalis Journey is for young adults who have finished high school up to age 24.  Young adults may be sponsored to attend either the Chrysalis Journey or The Walk to Emmaus depending on the needs and maturity of the young person.

The purpose of Chrysalis is to support the church's efforts to guide the spiritual formation of Christian young people.  Chrysalis provides young people with a course in the essentials of Christian faith and practice, a small group structure for deepening discipleship, and a larger community experience for leadership development.

And while Chrysalis is full of fun and laughter, the program does not depend on giving young people a good time.  Instead, its foundation is faith that God invites young people into a relationship of transforming love though Jesus Christ and calls them to be the church.  The butterfly, an ancient Christian symbol of Christ's death and resurrection, provides the central metaphor of the Chrysalis weekend.  Its life cycle beautifully illustrates the experience of spiritual growth and transformation.

Something wonderful happens when young people separate themselves from their habitual influences and distractions, like cell phones and social media, and spend three days interacting with God's good news in an atmosphere of Christian community.  These years are the most critical time in a person's spiritual formation.  During this time young people make many major decisions about religion, lifestyle, vocation, and lifelong friends.  They also face a great temptation to forget about God and to abandon the church.  Chrysalis exists to help young people meet this challenge.
If you want to sponsor a youth or young adult, you can go to www.fcchrysalis.com for an up-to-date application.  The total cost of the weekend is $90, which includes a $40 non-refundable weekend deposit.  You can mail the application to Judy Cromartie, 13850 Spanish Point Dr., Jacksonville 32225 with the total fee or deposit or email at [email protected].  Fees can be mailed to above address.
