What is Convention Card? The ACBL requires that each player have a convention card available to their opponents which displays your agreements with your partner.  Sounds daunting but I have created a BAND Newbie Convention Card which is available for your use in the 49er Piars.  You can use it for all of your games.  Don't play everything on the card? Just mark it off!  Ask Sharon for your copy.

Mentor/Mentee Program

BAND new Mentor/Mentee Program is growing like crazy and we hope that you will join in the fun and become a mentee and perhaps even a mentor to someone who has less experience at the game than you!

Some goals you may have that the BAND Mentor/Mentee Program can help you meet:
1. To feel more comfortable playing up at the next game level
2. To get to know more players
3. To understand the etiquette and proper behavior at the table
4. To understand director's rulings
5. To recognize strengths and identify areas of the game which may need more work.

If you think the BAND Mentor/Mentee Program is for you then
and we will find you a mentor to help you with your goals!
0-5 Free-Play Punch Card

A new program for 0-5 players is up and running and it includes a free play for you!

Just ask a BAND director for your very own 0-5 punch card and present it to the director each time you play.  Once you accumulate five punches, your 6th game is free!  Already used up one punch card, just pick up another one...It's that simple.

Intervenor's Gadget ~ Takeout Doubles

One of the biggest challenges to newbie players is getting into the auction once the opponent has opened the bidding.  There are two gadgets the Intervenor (opponent of the opening bidder) can use to get their side into the auction: Overcall and Takeout Double.

To make a takeout double of the opening bid, the intervenor wants the following type of hand:

  • Less than three cards in the opening bid suit
  • 13+ total points (including dummy/short* points)
  • Four cards in the unbid majors and at least three cards in each unbid minor.

If one of these points are missing, the Intervenor has to choose a different option.

*  Void = 5 points, singleton = 3 points, doubleton = 1 point.

As the Advancer (partner of the takeout double), bid four+ card majors up the line, otherwise respond in a minor suit or notrump.  The Advancer's ranges are divided into two ranges depending on whether the response is in a suit or in notrump:

  • Suit Ranges
    • 0-8 total points
    • 9-11 total points
    • 12+ total points
  • Notrump Ranges
    • 8-10 total points
    • 11-12 total points
    • 13+ total points.

A theoretical explanation for the difference in ranges may help the memory ~ The Intervenor counted dummy (short) points to make the takeout double.  When the advancer responders in notrump, the Intervenor must subtract out any dummy (short) points because they are useless in a notrump contract. For this reason, the Advancer's ranges must be increased to make up for the decrease in the Intervenor's hand evaluation.
