A Message from the
Superintendent
|
Dear Lovejoy Community:
While schools exist to educate our children, our most abiding mission is to support our kids to grow into happy and healthy adults and to keep them safe in the process. We had a full security audit completed in 2016 by a national expert on school safety. We have an articulated plan to keep our schools safe and we are currently reviewing all of our practices to determine things we can do to increase our level of security and to increase the perception of safety which our kids and parents have in relation to our campuses.
This has been a hard week for our entire Lovejoy community. As you know, we lost a Willow Springs Middle School student. Funeral arrangements are listed below. The opportunity to increase the protective factors for our children must be the highest priority in our schools and our community. The schools must take the lead in partnering with our families to raise our kids in the healthiest environment possible.

Visitation for Parker Pritz will be held this Friday, March 2nd from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at Faith Lutheran Church. The Funeral will be held on Saturday, March 3rd at 10:30 AM at Faith Lutheran Church. The church is located at 1701 E. Park Boulevard in Plano.

Safety and security remain among our highest priorities. As mentioned earlier, the district contracted for a security audit, which was completed by a national expert in the field. We have specific plans at each campus in response to a security breach. We continue to consider additional measures to address both the perception of safety, as well as the actual safety on every campus.
We would like to ask for your assistance. If you have information about a threat to the safety of a student, staff member, campus, or the district, we ask you to report it.
SafeSchools is our online safety compliance program, which is specifically designed for school use, incident management, and bullying reporting. This program allows students, staff, and parents to report tips on bullying, harassment, intimidation, weapons, drugs, or other threats to school safety by e-mail, via website, text, or by calling 469.919.5861. This system allows us to stay connected and to prevent incidents before they occur. Staff are immediately notified of every tip, and can effectively track and manage incidents to resolution in this web-based system. Multiple administrators throughout the district monitor submissions to assure entries are addressed in a timely manner. Once a tip is entered, tipsters can easily check on the status of their tip while remaining anonymous. School officials are notified through e-mail when tips are created and/or updated.
Posters are displayed in every classroom and in hallways throughout each of the Lovejoy campuses, providing information as to how to enter a tip.

STEM Festival - This Saturday
The first annual Lovejoy STEM Festival will be held at Lovejoy High School on Saturday, March 3rd from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. This will be a great opportunity to come see, learn, and do all things STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) in Lovejoy ISD. The STEM Council has planned various guest speakers, demonstrations, competitions, Makerspace opportunities, and robotics experiences for a fun, engaging day for students and adults of Lovejoy and beyond.

Open House for Prospective Families

Do you have friends, family members or co-workers interested in Lovejoy ISD? Lovejoy ISD will host an Open House for prospective families in conjunction with the STEM Festival on Saturday, March 3rd at Lovejoy High School. The Open House event will begin at 12:00 PM in the Library. Interested families can:
- Learn about the Lovejoy K-12 academic, STEM, fine arts, and athletic programs.
- Visit with students, parents, teachers, and administrators.
- Meet personally with elementary, intermediate, middle, and high school principals.
- Tour Lovejoy High School.
- Enjoy our STEM Festival with our award-winning STEM students and teachers.

Wrestling Returns From State
|
The largest number of state wrestling qualifiers in team history competed this past weekend. Sophomore Alex LeFort and Junior Morgan Elvin both placed 6th in their respective weights. The women's team finished in the top 20 of the state (#19 out of 80 teams) for the first time in history.
Sophomore Hunter Duncan and Freshmen Ralph Rucker led the boys team. Both wrestlers represented Lovejoy well. Coach Eaton, staff, and team members look to build on the successes from this season.
Congratulations to these student athletes.

The Lovejoy Extreme Engineering Robotics team placed 5th in the State VEX Robotics Skills Competition on Saturday. They just missed qualifying for the VEX Robotics World Championships later this year in Louisville. Congratulations to Sophomores Chase Barnes, Ian Carroll, Brenden Diaz, and Ross Walenciak for a great effort.

Back by popular demand, the 3rd Annual Taste of Fairview will be presented by Estate Life Magazine in partnership with the Allen Fairview Chamber, Heritage Ranch Golf and Country Club, and the Foundation for Lovejoy Schools.

Denim and Diamonds - Lone Starry Night
April 7th
Through your generosity and support, the Foundation for Lovejoy Schools awarded grants totaling $451,100 to teachers for use in their classrooms this year. The Foundation is funded primarily from Annual Appeal and the Denim and Diamonds (D&D) Gala and Auction. The Foundation's goal this year is to cover D&D costs with sponsorships prior to the night of the event so all monies spent at the event go directly to fund classroom grants.
The Foundation for Lovejoy Schools will host its 12th annual Denim and Diamonds Gala and Auction on Saturday, April 7, 2018, at the Marriott at Legacy Town Center in Plano. This year's theme is a Lone Starry Night. Foundation for Lovejoy Schools Chair, Carrie McClure and Co-Chair, Aimee Peay welcome you to a night featuring dinner, entertainment and live auctions.
The Foundation for Lovejoy Schools will host a raffle for three great prizes, which includes:
- $2500 VISA gift card - Donated by Owens Realtors
- EZ Go Golf cart - Completely Remodeled and Refurbished Model 2014 TXT-PDS with 2014 upbody with flip seating, new batteries, tires and LED head/tail lights. New factory-painted, flame-red body. EC Custom Carts - value $5,000

Lovejoy Children's Choir
The Lovejoy Children's Choir presented their spring concert yesterday at SCIS. These talented 4th, 5th, and 6th grade singers performed challenging selections under the direction of Valerie Czechowski, Brooke Grall, Wendy Hebert, and Anne Tracy. We are so proud of their efforts.

Lovejoy Visual Arts Spotlight Exhibition
Now Through March 6th
The Lovejoy Visual Arts (LJVA) Department invites you to attend the 1st Annual LJVA Spotlight Exhibition on view in the Lovejoy High School Art Gallery now through March 6th during normal school hours. This exhibition, featuring 47 selected works from over 170 submissions and juried by a field of 6 graduating seniors from the art program, is the first show of its kind featured in the gallery. Work selected for the LJVA Spotlight Exhibition was submitted from every level and form of study within the visual arts program as a showcase of the breadth of approach and personal voice found in LJVA studios. This show's direction and curation are the work of AP Studio Drawing Seniors Tad Greenwald and Emma Wigginton.

Lovejoy Baseball
The Varsity Leopards played this past weekend in the Wylie East Raider Classic and lost their first game to Princeton 5-2, but later rebounded with two victories. The first victory was over the Sherman Bearcats 6-2, followed by another victory over the McKinney North Bulldogs 6-5. The Varsity will travel this weekend to the Jesuit Classic to compete in one of the state's top baseball tournaments in the area.
The JV Black Team will start their season this weekend at the McKinney North Tournament.
The JV Red Team will travel to Dallas Hillcrest this weekend to compete in the Panther Classic Tournament. Good luck to all our Leopard Teams.

Lovejoy Golf
The Lovejoy Golf Team looks to compete this week despite the poor weather conditions. The Leopard teams are scheduled to play this Thursday and Friday in the Granbury Golf Tournament. Results from the tournament will be in next week's Email Express.

Lovejoy Powerlifting
Brock Prengler
and Sergio Arriaga competed in the Keller Central meet on Saturday February 24th. Both athletes competed in the 220 pound class with a chance to qualify for the regional meet. Brock finished first with a 1345 pound total. Sergio finished second with a 1310 pound total. These athletes will join James Ayers in the 114 pound class and Kade Ashley in the 242 pound class for the boys regional competition, which will be held on March 3rd at Keller Central High School. Qualifying for regionals in the girls division is Ally Carraway. Ally will be competing tomorrow at Prosper High School for a chance to go to the state meet. Good luck to all our lifters.

Lovejoy Boys Soccer
The Varsity team went 2-0 this past week to keep their 1st place position with wins over Royse City (1-0) and Highland Park (1-0). The Varsity Leopards took on West Mesquite last night at Leopard Stadium and lost 1-0 in dense fog. The Leopards travel to Forney on Friday to take on the Forney Jackrabbits.
The JV Boys played Dallas Highland Park this past Friday in Highland Park and came away with a 2-1 win. The win keeps the JV Boys undefeated in 15-5A. The JV Leopards played West Mesquite last night at Leopard Stadium and came away with a 3-2 victory. The JV Leopards will travel to Forney to take on the Jackrabbits this Friday.

Lovejoy Girls Soccer
The Varsity Lady Leopards played host to Highland Park this past Friday night and lost a close game 2-0. In their previous match, Highland Park defeated our Lady Leopards 9-1. The Lady Leopards showed vast improvement and looked to continue that improved play last night against West Mesquite, coming away with a 2-0 victory. The Leopards return home this Friday to take on the Forney Lady Jackrabbits.
The JV Lady Leopards returned to the field last night in Mesquite to take on West Mesquite. Lovejoy came away with a 2-0 victory. The JV Lady Leopards will return home this Friday to take on Forney High School.

Lovejoy Softball
Lovejoy was scheduled to play in the Lindale Tournament this past weekend, but weather forced the cancellation of the tournament. The Softball team then scheduled themselves in the Emory High School Round Robin Classic held on the new Emory Rains High School turf Softball field. The Lady Leopards defeated state ranked Paris North Lamar 8-6 and then lost to host Emory Rains 13-1. The Varsity Leopards will travel to Northwest ISD this weekend.
The JV Lady Leopards will travel this weekend to compete in the Carrollton ISD JV Tournament.

Lovejoy Tennis
The Lovejoy Varsity Tennis team will travel to Abilene to compete in the Cooper Cougar Classic tomorrow and Friday. This is one of the top tournaments in the state.
The JV Leopards will compete in the Flower Mound Marcus Tournament today.
Results of both tournaments will be included in next week's Email Express.

Lovejoy Track
The Lovejoy Boys and Girls Track team will compete this weekend in the annual Lovejoy High School Track Meet at Leopard Stadium. The Field Events are scheduled to begin at 8:30 AM. The 3200 M run will take place at 9:00 AM, followed by the distance medley at 11:00 AM. The Running Finals will begin at 12:30 PM.

Gifted and Talented Referrals for 2018-2019
The referral window for gifted and talented services is open for students in grades 1-12 through March 31st.

The Lovejoy Running Club
The Lovejoy Running Club meets every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 6:00 PM near the Duck Pond at Celebration Park. All ages and ability levels are welcome to attend, from novice walkers looking to shed a few pounds, to elite runners gearing up for the next race. WSMS Theatre - One Act Play Performances

The Willow Springs Middle School Theatre department presents I Never Saw Another Butterfly by Celeste Raspanti. Details are as follows:

Tickets Prices: $5 for students, $7 for adults
Location: WSMS Cafetorium
This Holocaust play centers around Raja, one of the children who survived Terezin, and the other children trapped in the Ghetto. A memory play, Raja recalls the events that led her to be the confident woman she is now. This play was based off true stories of these children's lives, based on actual drawings and poems that were buried in hopes of someone finding them after the war.
This 40 minute drama is the WSMS theatre department's UIL competition piece for One Act Play, which will take place on March 3rd in Grand Prairie.
Each night at our home show, there will be a guest critic to provide feedback for the cast. The audience is welcome to stay, but may leave after the performance if they choose.

24th Annual Young Masters Exhibition

Congratulations to the following Lovejoy High School visual art students for being selected to participate in the 24th annual Young Masters Exhibition at the Dallas Museum of Art. It is a prestigious honor for these students to have their work selected to hang among the halls of contemporary and historic masterpieces in an exhibition demonstrating the most extraordinary work created within AP Studio Art programs from ten of the areas highest performing high schools.

Lovejoy Girls' Soccer Presents
Future Leopard Night
March 2nd
The Lovejoy Girls' soccer team will host Future Leopard Night this Friday, March 2nd when they take on Forney with a 5:30 PM kick off for JV and a 7:15 PM kick off for Varsity. During halftime of the Varsity game, the Future Leopards will be able come on the field and try to score a goal with the JV players. Future Leopards will have the opportunity to meet the Varsity players following the Varsity game. This event is for all elementary, intermediate and middle school students.

WSMS and LHS Color Guard
March 3rd
The Color Guard teams will compete on Saturday March 3rd at the Frisco Wakeland High School Winter Guard Competition. The WSMS team will compete at 12:44 PM and the LHS team will compete at 6:30 PM.

LHS Orchestra UIL Concert and Sight-Reading
March 5th and 6th
The LHS Orchestra will participate in the UIL Concert and Sight-Reading Competition at the Allen High School Performing Arts Center on March 5th and 6th. The Orchestras will perform three selections for a set of adjudicators, and will then be provided with critique and a rating of I, II, or III. The Orchestras will then demonstrate their sight-reading skills by playing a new music selection. We hope to see you at the concerts.

LHS Theatre Arts
March 7th
Lovejoy High School Theatre will be competing at the 2018 District UIL One Act Play contest with William Cameron's drama Violet Sharp. The competition will take place at 3:30 PM on March 7th at Wylie East High School. Violet Sharp is based off of the sensational 1932 Lindbergh Kidnapping Case. The young British maid Violet raises the suspicion of the police in the aftermath of the momentous abduction with an inconsistent statement about her whereabouts to the police. With stress from the police combined with her own demons, Violet cannot seem to overcome her growing reputation of guilt whilst trying to clear her name. We wish our Theatre students "break a leg" as they represent Lovejoy.

LHS Band
March 7th
The 10th Annual LISD Percussion Concert is March 7th at 7:00 PM in the LHS Auditorium. Admission is free.
The percussionists will present their 10th annual concert featuring new, as well as classic, percussion literature. The LHS Percussion Ensemble has commissioned a new work for Marimba Quartet by composer Caleb Pickering and will be giving the world premiere during this concert. We hope to see you there for this wonderful evening of music making.

Lovejoy Gifted Association Rocket Launch

3....2....1.... Blast Off.....It's Rocket Launch Time.
Back by popular demand, the Lovejoy Gifted Association is partnering with the Dallas Area Rocket Society (DARS) for the annual LGA Rocket Project. The Rocket Project is an extracurricular STEM activity at which your child builds a rocket one evening, then launches it another day, all with the assistance of the professionals from DARS.
The Lovejoy Gifted Association is a non-profit organization supporting Gifted and Talented programs across all schools in Lovejoy ISD. The Rocket Project is a fundraiser with proceeds directly benefiting Lovejoy students. If you have questions, contact

Relay for Life is an annual event which will be held at Willow Springs Middle School to raise awareness of cancer and to donate to cancer research. This year's initiative is to bring the Lovejoy community together as a whole to promote a sense of unity and caring. We hope you will save the date of April 6th and join us for Relay for Life.

Relay for Life Gallery Wall Opportunity
To encourage participation of students at the elementary and intermediate school levels, the LHS Relay for Life organizers are hosting a coloring page activity. Students may

to print the coloring page and decorate it as creatively as they can. They may then turn the page into the receptionist desk at their campus to receive a pencil, sticker or other prize. The event organizers will use all coloring pages to create a gallery wall for the event, which will represent loving support for those whose lives have been affected by cancer.
Relay for Life Luminarias
Relay for Life is selling Luminarias for the Relay for Life event on April 6th at Willow Springs Middle School. Luminarias honor those whose lives have been affected by cancer. You may dedicate a Luminaria to loved ones who lost their battles with cancer, someone currently battling cancer, or anyone who has overcome cancer. When you attend the Relay event, you will see the Luminarias placed around the track, decorated with names and sometimes messages to whom they are dedicated. Luminarias are $10. Taylor Smith - Class of 2011
Taylor Smith received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Southern Methodist University and her Master of Interactive Technology in Game Design from SMU's Guildhall. She works as an artist, illustrator, and content creator.
Taylor came very highly recommended to Lovejoy by LHS Teacher and K-12 Visual Arts Coordinator, Brice McCasland, when we were looking to update the elementary school mascots. Taylor's work is shown below in an "after" and "before" format. Thanks, Taylor, for a job well done. We are #lovejoyproud.
