Alumni Weekend - June 23 & 24
|
The countdown is officially on! There are now just under 15 days until Alumni Weekend! We are excited for what is shaping up to be a fun weekend! There are quite a few alumni who have RSVP'd for the weekend who haven't been back to campus since they graduated. We are excited to meet these alumni for the first time and to catch up with our other alumni.
If you haven't purchased tickets for the Alumni Gathering at Appalachian Power Park on Friday night (June 23), follow this link to purchase tickets. Tickets are $15 each and cover general admission to the game (gates open at 6:00 pm) and all you can eat food and drinks until the 7th Inning. Tickets are on sale now until Tuesday, June 20, so purchase your tickets today!
Then, join us for brunch on Saturday morning (June 24) in the Rotunda from 10:00 - 11:00 am. Please RSVP your attendance to Stephanie Martin. A tour of the Wehrle Innovation Center will be departing from the Rotunda at 11:00 am for those interested in seeing the campus's newest building.
We are pleased to announce that we are offering reduced-price tickets to the Wine and All That Jazz Festival which will be held on Saturday (June 24) from 2:00-10:00 pm on UC's riverfront lawn. Tickets are $25 each if purchased through our office online. Tickets must be purchased by Wednesday, June 21, and can be picked up in the Alumni Office on Thursday and Friday (June 22 & 23) until 5:00 pm or at Will Call the day of the event.

School of Business and Leadership alumna, Chelsea Staley, '10, and her co-wrokers at the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association were recently honored at a Petco Foundation Gala in San Diego, California, for the work they are doing in saving the lives of animals in need of homes in Kanawha County. Chelsea and her team have made creative and dramatic improvements to the business practices of the Humane Association and have raised the lifesaving rate of animals in the shelter from 35% in 2012 to 63% in 2014 and to 91% after that (and staying greater than 81% ever since). For their efforts, they were awarded the Paul Jolly Compassion Award at the Gala.

Reid McEwen, '10, was part of UC's inaugural MBA class. Now he's working on a career as an entrepreneur. Reid and his business partner, Todd Platzer, have launched a business selling a product called Odor Erasure, a natural deodorant. The deodorant uses oxygenated African shea oil to eliminate body odor by killing the bacteria that causes it. To learn more about his company and product, follow this

This fall, the University of Charleston will have an exciting new program to offer to exemplary freshmen: The UC Honors College. To be eligible for the program prospective students must have a 4.0 or higher high school GPA and participate in a personal interview. 30 students will be joining us in the inaugural class of the Honors College in the fall.
The Honors College was created to give an enhanced academic experience to talented students. In the first year, students will participate in an Honors College seminar, which will focus on the mission and curriculum of UC as well as give students an opportunity to discuss local and global issues and engage in campus and community projects. In the semesters that follow, students will design projects they will do either as part of a class or outside of class, which will give them a chance to work one-on-one with a faculty member. In the course of the student's time at UC, he or she will do six projects, each based on one the University's Liberal Learning Outcomes. The projects will be archived in the student's electronic portfolio as evidence of exemplary achievement.
Honors students have an opportunity to live on campus in Middle Hall (rather than the freshman Brotherton Hall) in an Honors Community, where they will be able to form lasting relationships with other talented students. UC students will be offered several new academic options beginning this fall. A new Multidisciplinary Major takes the former Independent Major and identifies that three minors can be combined into one major. Students are able to choose from some already established combinations or can choose their own combinations according to their interests. This will allow students to pursue interdisciplinary study that fits into future plans and current passions.
UC has over 15 minors from which a student may choose. The Entrepreneurial Minor has been added this year to assist students in mastering the skills to be innovative in their chosen careers. Additionally, a new Regional Studies in Appalachia Minor has been added. This interdisciplinary minor allows students the opportunity to study local culture in a concerted, interdisciplinary way with courses spanning from English to Social Sciences to Business.
Students who are interested in studying the science of human movement and exercise will have an additional major this year, Movement Sciences. This major will prepare individuals to work in the field of exercise as well as entering the Masters of Athletic Training program.

Head women's tennis coach, Shari Reed, was recently named
to the athletic department's full-time staff as the Director of Athletics Development. She will continue to coach the women's tennis team while
overseeing fundraising efforts among Charleston's varsity sports.
Shari's mission when she begins in the position later this month is to work on outreach by continuing to improve relationships between the school and its alumni, as well as the Charleston community as a whole.

Interested in what UC is doing in research? Join the IRB!
The Provost's Office is searching for two individuals who would be willing to serve on the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of the University. This is a volunteer position that allows you to work with a group of faculty across the institution in reviewing all the research that is being done. You do not need to have research experience but have interests in the protection of human rights in all investigations. You will be asked to review proposals from students and faculty. You will receive training and guidelines that safeguard the rights and welfare of all human subjects who participate in research studies conducted at UC. Stephen Kidd, Assistant Professor and Finance Program Director, was quoted in an article on wallethub.com entitled, 10 Money-Saving Tips for College Grads. In the section outlining the most common mistakes of new grads, he was quoted as saying "Young people, having little concept of the power of compounded returns, have little understanding of the need to begin investing at an early age. Young people then become old people with little set aside for their retirement security."

The National Consumers League (NCL) and its partners announced last week the winners of the sixth annual Script Your Future Medication Adherence Team Challenge. The University of Charleston School of Pharmacy (UCSOP) received a National Award. It is the fourth time and third consecutive year that UCSOP has been recognized with this accolade. Students and faculty at UCSOP will be formally recognized and receive the National Award during the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) annual meeting at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center in Nashville, Tennessee on July 16, 2017.

Good news!
The Center for Career Development will be transitioning to a new job posting system called Handshake for our students and alumni. Handshake will replace the old Eagle Link system. We anticipate the new system to go live on August 1st. Handshake is easier to use and more versatile than Eagle Link. Best of all, Handshake is modeled after social networking sites, like LinkedIn and Facebook, giving users the ability to interact with employers in new ways. Once Handshake goes live in August, alumni will receive an e-mail with more information about how to activate their accounts. Contact Travis Kahle in the Center for Career Development for more information in the meantime.

This week, we welcomed the HOBY (Hugh O-Brien Youth Leadership) State Leadership Seminar to our campus. During the event, high school sophomores were recognized for their leadership talents, and learned to apply them to become effective, ethical leaders in their home, school, workplace and community.
Founded in 1958, HOBY's mission is to inspire and develop a global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation. Every year, nearly 10,000 students participate in HOBY programs.

Interested in becoming a mentor to UC students? The Center for Career Development is seeking alumni who are willing to serve as professional mentors for students majoring in business. The time commitment is low- we ask for 1 hour every two weeks, and the mentorship can be as short as one semester, but can be longer if mentors have a good experience and wish to continue. Golden Eagle Athletic Updates
|
UC men's and women's golf coach, Will Johnson, was selected as the Atlantic Region "Coach of the Year." The Atlantic Region is comprised of approximately (40) D2 schools from NC, WV, VA, OH and PA. Coach Johnson's women's golf team won the Mountain East Conference title this year, Viktor Putswo was "Player of the Year," and his team advanced to the national finals of the Men's Golf D2 Nationals. Coach Johnson has worked hard to place the UC golf program into the national arena.

Softball team member, Haleigh Christopher, earned honorable mention All-American honors from the Conference Commissioner's Association 2017 DII All-American selections. The awards honor softball student athletes from the Association's eight regions. Christopher lead the Mountain East Conference in homeruns, RBIs, total bases, and doubles, earning her first team all-conference as well as MEC Freshman of the Year, CCA first team All-Region and NFCA first team All-Region. Christopher was also one of eight finalists for the NFCA National freshman of the year.

Drew Hefner was named the 2016-17 Gatorade West Virginia Baseball Player of the Year. The first Gatorade West Virginia Baseball Player of the Year to be chosen from Bridgeport High School, he will be joining the Golden Eagles Baseball program this fall.
