A Message from our President

The beginning of June marks the official wrap up of our annual membership campaign and we enthusiastically welcome our newest 100 members. Our staff looks forward to supporting each of your businesses as you connect and grow with your fellow members and the business community at large. I hope to see many of our new members at our upcoming Members Breakfast on Tuesday, June 13th to delve a little deeper into all of the ways your membership can benefit your business.

June also marks the completion of the 25th program year for the Leadership Greater Waterbury program, which this year produced 17 graduates and four group projects that worked to enhance and give back to our community. Congratulations to our LGW Class of 2017, as well as the 2017 Alumnus of the Year, the Chamber's own Special Events Director, Courtney Ligi. We are already recruiting for LGW's next program year, and encourage applicants or employers to apply now for the Class of 2018.

The celebrations will continue throughout the month as our Young Professionals of Waterbury Region (YPOWR) program celebrates 5 years next week with a family-friendly pizza and game night celebration. We also look forward to honoring excellence in the healthcare industry with the Health Care Council's 12th Annual Meeting and Awards Breakfast later in the month. Please join us as we congratulate our 2017 Recipients: Peter Jacoby, MD, Saint Mary's Hospital Chairman of Emergency Services with the Leadership Award; Robin Cracco, Saint Mary's Hospital Nursing Director with the Unsung Hero Award; Meghan Lennon, Greater Waterbury YMCA Health & Wellness Director with the Stephen Sasala Health Advocate Award; and Easterseals Center for Better Hearing with the Organizational Excellence Award.

In addition to all of this, we'll be bringing you several networking opportunities this month- keep scrolling for all of our upcoming events, as well as Chamber news and updates. I hope to connect with you at one of these many opportunities to expand your business network.

As always, please reach out to me if I can be of service to you or your business at (203) 757-0701 or at   [email protected].

Best Regards,

HR Corner: "Family Business Success Points"
As someone who grew up in a family business, lives in a family business, and has worked for two other family businesses, I believe I am highly qualified on the subject!

My greatest advice for anyone who wishes to start a family business, or grow the business, is to always treat it as a business, not as the family!  What do I mean?
1.    Institute business practices and procedures that would be appropriate for any business, to be used by all (family too - hiring, training, etc.). Ensure clarity of areas of responsibility.
2.    Create an atmosphere of open communication with all.
3.    Keep family squabbles out of the workplace.
4.     Ensure every family member in the business is interested in being there!
5.    Allow the family members that have the expertise contribute as times and markets change.
6.    Make sure you have family time that does not include "the business"!

If you struggle with any one of these six points, seek outside advisors to help you to navigate through the process of running a business successfully!
