Megan Almon Speaks to Students About
the Value of Life and Defending Truth
|
|
Prince Avenue Christian School middle and high school students recently welcomed Megan Almon from the Life Training Institute as a special guest speaker as part of the PACS Distinguished Speaker Series. Mrs. Almon presented “The Case for Life” helping students understand how to persuasively defend their views in the marketplace of ideas by clearly presenting the pro-life position.
Mrs. Almon clearly explained to students the importance of ideas. “The ideas that we adopt as beliefs play themselves out in our own lives and in the lives of those around us. Ideas have consequences.” She identified the ideas in society that are driving the issue of abortion as they relate to identity. She said, “Two questions that our culture struggles to answer are ‘Is truth really true?’ and ‘What makes human beings valuable?’”
Mrs. Almon encouraged students to simplify the issue. “Emotionally, physiologically, and economically abortion is complex. Morally, it is simple. Abortion is a question of value.” She reminded students of their own intrinsic value. “You matter because of particular traits, talents, or abilities. You are valuable just because you’re a human being.”

Weaver Named STAR Student

Prince Avenue senior Emily Weaver has been named the 2017-18 STAR Student for Prince Avenue Christian School, scoring the highest on one sitting of the SAT test this year. She selected Science teacher Dale Autry as her STAR Teacher. Both Emily and Mr. Autry were honored at the Oconee County Chamber of Commerce STAR Student Breakfast.
Emily is the daughter of Chris and Tracey Weaver and has attended PACS for seven years. Her notable achievements include being the top of her class for the past six years, being a National Merit Semifinalist, receiving the Georgia Certificate of Merit, and being named the Rotary Club Student of the Semester. Emily is a talented member of the PACS concert and jazz bands and is active on the PACS Academic Team. Emily is also a member of the National Honor’s Society, Beta Club, and Interact Club. Emily attends Prince Avenue Baptist Church where she is active in the youth group.

Abby Frost’s Essay Chosen as
State Winner of DAR Contest

Prince Avenue Christian School junior Abby Frost was recently notified that the American History essay she submitted to the Apalachee Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) has been selected as the essay contest state winner. Abby responded to the prompt, “Advantages and Disadvantages of Working Relationships Between Foreign Parties”. Specifically, Abby’s essay researched how Columbus convinced King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella to finance his first voyage.

Walton EMC Gives Safety Demonstration
to 4th Grade Students

As a culmination of their Electricity and Magnetism unit, Prince Avenue Christian School 4th grade students received a visit from Walton EMC personnel. Jeff Paul (Member Services Director) and Jennifer Broun (Community and Youth Representative) presented a safety demonstration on electricity.
Students were able to see how electricity runs through fallen wires, a ladder, and a wire that may fall on a car. Mr. Paul and Mr. Broun instructed students on how to handle these dangerous situations as well as how to exit a car if a power line falls across it due to a storm or accident.

Lieutenant Zach Barrett, a Prince Avenue Christian School alumnus, and Lieutenant Bo Huff with the Walton County Sheriff’s office recently spoke to Mrs. Owens 9th grade Honors Biology classes. Lieutenant Huff, head of the Crime Scene and Evidence Unit, discussed with students how crime scenes are processed explaining the importance of detail, observation, and documentation when processing a scene. Both Lieutenant Barrett and Lieutenant Huff discussed how evidence is gathered and specifically, the way DNA evidence can be used to help solve a case. Students learned how investigators obtain DNA samples, its accuracy in identifying a suspect, and the challenges with using DNA evidence.
Honors Biology students had just concluded a unit on DNA and DNA analysis. Lieutenant Barrett and Lieutenant Huff were able to describe for students how the information they learned in class is used in a real-world setting. Students were able to ask questions and better understand the benefits and challenges law enforcement officers face when solving a crime.

Dr. Wayne Wallis, Veterinarian,
Lunch and Learn Speaker

Dr. Wayne Wallis, veterinarian and father of Prince Avenue Christian School Spiritual Life Director Ben Wallis, was this month’s Lunch and Learn speaker to high school students.
Dr. Wallis explained that the veterinarian field is difficult with the hardest part balancing the business aspect with the clinical aspect. He recommended that students avoid choosing to major in pre-veterinarian in college because their options will then be limited in the future. Dr. Wallis explained the many different types of Veterinarian practices and the years of education required to accomplish certain practices. Ultimately, Dr. Wallis encouraged students to consider any chosen occupation a ministry in which students should love their work, love people, and use their God-given abilities to bring glory to God and lead people to the Lord.

Prince Avenue Christian School students will have artwork displayed at the Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation Center from February 23 – March 23 as part of Oconee County Youth Art Month. Youth Art Month is a national show in coordination with the National Art Education Association. All of the artwork on display is from private and public schools in Oconee County.

Wolverine Girls and Boys Basketball Teams
Win Region Titles - Make Program History
|
The Wolverine basketball teams, both girls and boys, made history by winning the Region 8A Championship on the same day versus the same school opponent.
Both teams competed against Athens Academy in the Region 8A Finals. The Lady Wolverines won 38-31 earning their second region title in program history. The Wolverines won 40-38 earning their first region title in program history. This is also the first time in PACS Athletics that both Girls and Boys Basketball teams have played in Region Finals on the same day. Both teams winning a victory made the day even more special.

Six Prince Avenue Christian School basketball players were recognized by 8A Region for their performances on the court this season.
Sophomore Ansley Hall was named Girls Player of the year while senior Dalton Meeler was named Co-Boys Player of the Year.
Selected for Second Team was junior Madison Britt, and receiving Honorable Mentions were juniors Janie Henderson and Mack Simmons and senior Millican Jarrett.
Congratulations to these Wolverine athletes for an excellent season and for representing PACS so well.

McDonald Signs to Swim at the College Level

Prince Avenue senior John Morgan McDonald recently signed to swim at the college level with the University of Cumberlands.
PACS swim coach Dale Autry described John Morgan’s commitment to swimming at PACS. “John Morgan has been swimming for Prince since 7th grade. He obviously takes seriously his duty to use the great talent that God has given him to the best of his ability. He holds four school records in swimming events, and in the recent state swim meet won the championship in the class A-AAA 500 freestyle. His dedication to his sport and our school have brought great honor to our school.”

On any given day at Prince Avenue Christian School, a visitor might observe snack time or meal time. Most students are eating something quick packed from home or one of the well-prepared school lunches. However, one student enjoys sharing something special with her friends.
“I love baking for people and seeing their reactions when they eat my creations,” explains Delaney Cook, a junior at PACS. “I was bringing the things I baked to school. I would give them away to whoever wanted them, but my friends told me I needed to start selling them, which turned into Delaney’s Delights.”
Delaney’s Delights is the privately-owned and run baking business started one year ago by Delaney Cook at the encouragement of her PACS friends. Delaney bakes cookies, cupcakes, and Whoopie pies and sells them for birthday parties, bridal luncheons, work and Christmas parties, and many other special occasions.
Delaney has attended Prince Avenue for eight years and is heavily involved in student life as a member of the Varsity Girls Golf team, as a Barnabas high school mentor, and as a member of the Beta Club, National Honors Society, and Interact club. In addition, Delaney attends Athens Church and is active in a small group. She also spends time at her mother’s local business, Activekidz, helping children during physical therapy sessions or working in the office.
One might assume that with all of this responsibility, Delaney would have assistance with the ongoing demands of her baking business, but Delaney is very hands-on. “I like to meet all of my customers myself to give it a more personal touch. I also created my website and social media pages. I do not have any employees, but sometimes my parents will help me if I have a lot to do.”
