2017 Volunteer of the Year
WERU volunteer wins award

Pat Fowler, a long-time volunteer at WERU, has been selected as the "2017 Volunteer of the Year" by the National Federation of Community Broadcasters, by virtue of her almost three decades of volunteer behind-the-scenes service.

"What an amazing reward--a national award for something which I've thoroughly enjoyed. It's just as astounding to be singled out within the WERU community where so many people give so much time, work and thoughtful caring," says Fowler.
Hall of Famer
Down Home Country
William "Doc" Morrill, the long-time host of Down Home Country on WERU, Thursday mornings 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. and rebroadcast on Sunday mornings 5:00 - 6:00 a.m., will be inducted into the  Maine Country Music Hall of Fame on  June 11

Morrill had a long and noteworthy career in country music and this recognition is well-earned.

About his induction, Doc said, "I don't have much to say, but that I'm ecstatic about it. I've been playing music since I was 16 years old, so if I can make it through my next birthday in August, I'll be in the business 70 years. Seven decades. That's a long time, but I love it."

Summer events in Castine
Town of Castine

Castine Historical Society Summer Exhibit -  Castine's Devoted Women: Partnership and Social Reform 1910-1962

The Castine Historical Society's 2017 Summer Exhibit Castine's Devoted Women: Partnership and Social Reform 1910-1962focuses on the lives of Mary W. (Molly) Dewson and Mary G. (Polly) Porter who were life-partners during an age of progressive change encompassing woman's right to vote, labor and wage reform, and feminism.

Molly Dewson was one of the first women to have national political power and influence in Washington D.C.  She earned the respect and friendship of many high profile political figures including Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt during her work for social reform and women's equality.

The story of the two women over their 50-year partnership is told through their words and those of their contemporaries taken from newspaper clippings, letters and memoirs.  The recent gift to the Society of 28 scrapbooks kept by Molly and Polly has provided a wealth of material for the exhibit.  Volunteers spent many hours searching through the pages of the scrapbooks to select the most appropriate images to highlight their story.  These images were then converted into historical panels, which have striking relevance to today's social and political culture

Admission is free.

Fourth of July Celebration

The  4th of July  officially kicks off the Castine summer season.  Visitors from around the world return to a place they have long cherished - "Castine Under The Elms and By The Sea."

Family, friends and visitors alike join in the old fashion day style celebration of parades, flag waving, special foods, evening concerts and the best fireworks display over the bay anywhere!

This year, make your reservations early and stay in one of our cottages, homes for rent or one of our cozy B&B's. The Castine  4th of July Celebration will soon become a family tradition.

Bastille Day Celebration - July 14

The idyllic and historic setting of Castine, Maine, with its pristine Penobscot Bay as a backdrop, is hosting their second annual Bastille Day Celebration on Friday, July 14 th .  This family celebration takes place on the French national holiday and encourages visitors from near and far to experience our Franco-American and Native American culture through music, food, film, lectures, children's activities, and lighthouse tours. Castine traces its French heritage to the Baron de St. Castin.  His marriage to Wabanaki Chief Madockawando's daughter linked our French and Native American cultures.

The celebration begins appropriately with a French toast breakfast.  You'll learn the art of French cooking during our chef's demonstration. Celebration goers will be encouraged to wear white to our late afternoon "Picnic en Blanc" where you'll be seated at long white tables at the town hall, under the elms, while listening to Franco-American music.  Select your designer picnic from our local purveyors or bring your own with French delights.  A plethora of other activities allow you to take in the sites while enjoying a lighthouse tour or tasting hand-cranked ice cream while you take in a little history at the Wilson Museum.  Jesters, jugglers and dancing clowns will delight children of all ages throughout the day.  Historic lectures and films are designed to satisfy even the most discerning history buffs.  Complete your celebration experience with a summer evening concert on the waterfront tapping your toes as you watch sail boats in the distance.

Come early and prepare your palate with a French wine tasting on Thursday afternoon or stay overnight and work off the festival with our 5K road race on Saturday morning.

This event is hosted by the Town of Castine's Bastille Day Celebration Committee.

Pixie Harbor Hoopla - JUNE 11, 2017
Calling all fairies, pirates, elves, wizards, hobbits and gnomes to Pixie Harbor Hoopla in Bucksport!

Pixie Harbor Hoopla is a "magical" themed festival and a friendly uplifting fun day! Fairies & Pirates of all ages are invited to join us on the waterfront for a day of enchantment on Sunday, June 11th from 11am to 4pm.

Then display your creation for the day on the Bucksport Waterfront. It is said that fairy spirits reside among the trees, flowers, plants, and creatures that live in gardens. The act of building a fairy house is believed to bring good luck as well as help the plants and flowers to grow.

Pants on Fire 5K Beer Run/Walk--June 17th
Winterport
The Pants on Fire 5K Beer Run/Walk is a WABA event. It began four years ago as a way to promote our local area businesses and raise funds for our local Fire and Rescue Association, as well as one
other charity/organization.

Every year half the registration proceeds/dollars raised goes to the Fire/Rescue and then we choose one
other local organization; this year it is our Winterport Memorial Library.

WABA is responsible for organizing the event and we solicit sponsors via our membership and area businesses/organizations; you don't have to be a WABA member to be a race sponsor. Sponsor dollars
cover the cost to put on the race.

The race is scheduled for  Saturday, June 17th, at Abbott Park, in Winterport, ME.

It is a 5Krun/walk, through downtown Winterport. We also have a 1K kids fun run
that takes place at Abbott Park. Each participant, over the age of 21, gets one free beer at the end of our race. We'll have a beer tent with beer/cider from Penobscot Bay Brewery/Winterport Winery.

Responsible Beverage Server and Seller Training
Healthy Acadia

Where:  June 14, 2017  at Ellsworth Public Library
June 19, 2017  at Atlantic Oceanside, Bar Harbor

When:  For both dates:  8:30 am  -off-premise/seller training;  1:00pm  - on-premise/server training

Maine's bustling tourist season is just around the corner and stores, restaurants, and taverns will be recruiting new servers and staff. For establishments where alcoholic beverages are sold, it is critical for employers and managers to ensure that new hires are familiar with current state liquor laws and the importance of preventing sales to minors and to individuals who are visibly intoxicated.

Healthy Acadia will offer Responsible Beverage Server & Seller Training, on June 14 in Ellsworth and June 19 in Bar Harbor, to  provide employers and employees who sell alcoholic beverages with the knowledge they need to better identify and prevent violations of liquor laws. This course emphasizes increasing employees' knowledge about liquor laws, the importance of preventing underage sales and sales to visibly intoxicated individuals, and offers guidance for refusing service when necessary. Employees will receive training on best practices to identify minors, false identification, and signs of visible intoxication.

Responsible Beverage Seller and Server training will be held on Wednesday, June 14  in the Community Room at Ellsworth Public Library, located at 20 State Street, Ellsworth. On Monday June 19, this training will also be offered at the Atlantic Oceanside, 119 Eden St, Bar Harbor. Off-premise trainings -  for employees of businesses with off-premise liquor licenses, including grocery, liquor, and convenience stores  - begin at 8:30 a.m. and on-premise trainings -  for employees of businesses with on-premises liquor licenses, such as restaurants, hotels and bars where alcohol is consumed  - will start at 1:00 p.m.

Training employees through this 4-hour course may lead to reduced insurance rates for participating businesses and will help reduce the risk of making costly and/or tragic unlawful sales.  All participants receive a certificate of completion valid for 5 years.  Pre-registration is required.  Registration fee is $25.00 per participant. Participants must arrive on time and bring a valid photo ID for certification.

For more information, to sign up for training, or to schedule a training for 6 or more employees at your business, please contact Tara Young at 667-7171 or  [email protected] .

Historic cooking with Rachel Snell
Apple Jelly, Snowballs, and Rural Sociability in 19th Century Recipes

Tuesday, June 20, 3 - 5 p.m.
Hutchins Education Center, 112 Perkins St., Castine, Maine

Cooking and eating can be considered mundane tasks, but for people of most times, places, and ethnicities, food contains significant political, economic, and social implications. On Tuesday, June 20 (3 - 5 p.m.) at the Hutchins Education Center in Castine, food historian Rachel Snell, will explore two recipes, apple jelly and snowballs. These represent the application of genteel ideals in rural North America and suggest how those ideals were adapted to fit the rhythms and constraints of rural life. In addition to sampling the recipes, the presentation will discuss serving, dining etiquette, and the connections between food and the performance of femininity in the 19 th century.

Dr. Rachel A. Snell is an adjunct instructor in History and Honors at the University of Maine. Her doctoral book project, The Place of Happiness: Recipes, Cookbooks, and the Negotiation of Domesticity in Anglo-America, 1830 - 1880 , gives the reader an in-depth look at the role of food in the mid-to-late 19 th century. She resides in Old Town, Maine with her family.

This free program is open to the public. For more information, contact the Wilson Museum at (207) 326-9247 or [email protected].
