Just Announced: USHJA Emerging Jumper Rider Program
Today, USHJA announced a new program to identify the next generation of international Show Jumping talent in the United States. The USHJA Emerging Jumper Rider Program will allow the United States to identify and provide education and guidance to riders competing at the 1.10m-1.35m levels, as well as to their trainers and parents.

The Emerging Jumper Rider Program uses the new USHJA Zone Jumper Team Championships, which are offered at 1.10/1.15m, 1.20/1.25m and 1.30/1.35m, to identify Jumper riders who have the skill and desire to excel in the sport, while educating these riders to become well-rounded horsemen on their path to excellence.

Invitations to the USHJA Zones 7 & 8 Jumper Team Championships (July 9-12 at GO Show in Oklahoma City) have been sent. We wish all the competitors in the Championships the best of luck and congratulations to those who go and will be named USHJA Emerging Jumper Riders as part of this new program!  Click here to read more about the program.

Affiliate Spotlight:
Arizona Hunter Jumper Association
This month's Affiliate Spotlight was submitted by the Arizona Hunter Jumper Association, written by Maddie James:

George H. Morris returned to Betty Beran's Smoke Tree Ranch in Scottsdale, Arizona, April 7th-9th for another successful clinic.  Morris shared his wealth of knowledge with 24 riders and a multitude of auditors that arrived to learn from the master everyday.

Riders were split into three groups at the 1.20m, 1.10m, and 1.00m level. Riders began every morning setting and walking the course with Morris and then put their skills to the test.

Each session began with detailed flatwork to prepare the horses and riders for the courses to come. The former United States show-jumping coach included discussions about impulsion, straightness, rhythm, collection, balance, and contact. Riders practiced shoulder-fore and haunches-in as well as many other exercises on the flat. He stressed that dressage is the basis for good riding in any discipline. Morris emphasized that success comes from the details and taking time to work with your horse, but not to drill them.

Mr. Morris explained the importance of "practicing guts and gumption" and pushed the riders just slightly out of their comfort zones. Throughout each group Mr. Morris discussed the significance of forward seat riding and using a variety of seats, including half seat, full seat, and when applicable, a driving seat. He also emphasized that he wanted the riders to become leg riders, not just seat riders. Morris referenced examples of successful riders, including Nick Skelton, Eric Lamaze, and McClain Ward and how riders should be studying them and trying to emulate their styles as much as possible.

What an honor it was to learn from the world renowned founding father of hunt seat equitation. Whether on a horse or watching from the viewing stands, it was a learning experience unlike any other. George H. Morris is the best of the best when it comes to riding and teaching and any lesson learned from him is priceless.
