Just because school is out doesn't mean things slow down much around DMPS. This week we share news about two new principals (Kip Colemon at Meredith and Todd Johnson at Cowles), invite you to a School Board workshop, and highlight a summer program that's launching our new Skilled Trades Alliance. Read on for these stories and much more.
During the summer TheWeek@DMPS will take a little vacation, arriving occasionally, not weekly, in your inbox as we have news to share or reminders about the start of next school year. Speaking of which, just 68 days to go until the the 2017-18 school year begins.

DES MOINES UNIVERSITY OFFERS FREE BACK-TO-SCHOOL EXAMS
|
Every kid deserves a healthy start to the school year. It's always best when families can schedule a school physical in a clinic, with a family doctor they can visit when their child has illness or injury. Relationships with care providers are an important part of staying healthy! For families who are uninsured or underinsured, our partners at Des Moines University will conduct free back-to-school physicals, under the supervision of licensed clinicians, for students in need. The physicals will be provided on July 27 and 28 at North High School. Click here to pre-register.

ICYMI: DMPS IN THE NEWS
|
Recent items in the news or online about or of interest to students, teachers and parents at Des Moines Public Schools:
- Don't let this be a summer to forget (as opposed to an unforgettable summer). WHO-TV's Laura Barczewski looks at some of the math and reading resources available to parents and students to stay sharp when school is not in session, and talks with Merrill vice principal Diane Kehm about some of the summer tools available through DMPS. Click here for Channel 13's report.
- We shared above the news about Roosevelt's John Swanda being drafted by the Los Angeles Angels. The Des Moines Register spoke with Swanda about how he learned of being picked and his decision to turn pro. Click here for the Register's story.
