Christianson's Nursery & Greenhouse 14th Annual Rose Festival happens on Saturday, June 17, 2017. We have a line up for you that will intrigue every bit of your rose-colored outlook!
11:00 a.m., Guest Speaker and Author, Nita Jo Rountree, will 'show and tell' her new book "Growing Roses in the Pacific Northwest: 90 Best Varieties for Successful Rose Gardening". Copies of her book will be available for sale before and after her presentation.
1:00 p.m., Rebecca Reed, U. S. Sales Executive for David Austin Roses, will describe characteristics and qualities of David Austin varieties. Her descriptions and knowledge of these fragrant and very romantic roses will help you decide which roses are perfect for your garden.
2:00 p.m., Enjoy an old-fashioned ice cream social featuring rose ice cream from Mallard's in Bellingham (made from real organic rose oil!).
3:00 p.m., The day peaks with Key Note Speakers (AKA "The Rosebuds"), Ciscoe Morris and John Christianson as they entertain with rose garden lore while teaching about best rose companions and practices.
In addition, the Tri- Valley Rose Society will be here from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. to answer all your rose questions. They will share their many years of combined rose growing knowledge and help identify established roses whose names have been lost through the years. Our enthusiasm grows when we see beginning and expert rose gardeners working together and exchanging ideas. This first-hand knowledge and experience that the pros provide is invaluable for those who would love helpful advice about growing healthy roses.
From 9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m., All are welcome to submit as many blossoms as they would like to display in the Schoolhouse. The roses will be judged in the following categories: Best in Show, Best Fragrance and Best Floral Display (an arrangement using perennials with roses).
You are also welcome to explore our Schoolhouse Rose Garden to see some of our favorite varieties and the ways we have combined roses with perennials. Bring a picnic lunch and dine on the Schoolhouse lawn or at one of our tables. This is always a relaxed and fun event and an opportunity to make new rose loving friends.

Likened to the well known children's book by Author, Frances Hodgson Burnett, "The Secret Garden", the Meadow Schoolhouse and its extensive rose garden is a place to explore and to invite friends to gather and celebrate.

Boost Your Brainpower With Gardening
A month ago, we received a lovely email from one of our customers concerned about others afflicted with fibromyalgia. Q:
Hi John, We have a curly willow in our front yard. It's around 10 years old.
We pruned it in February to a nice shape. However, this spring we have noticed some of the new growth on lower branches is already dead yet higher branches
are still healthy. Is my tree dying? -Don, Marysville, WA
A: Hello Don, It is diseased but not dying. They do get twig blight. This is not uncommon with a wet winter and spring. The usual treatment is just to remove the dead twigs. Sprays are ineffective at this point. After leaves drop in the fall, spray with copper fungicide (we carry this at the Nursery) which is preventative and will keep the disease from infecting the tree (follow label directions).

Nordic Museum Open House
Sunday, June 25
Nordic Heritage Museum is building a new home. The modern 57,000-sq. ft. museum and cultural center will be located in the heart of Ballard (on Market Street), and will include a refined layout and expanded exhibition and educational spaces.
To celebrate this event, community advocate Sunnie Empie, will host an informational open house in our Schoolhouse on Sunday, June 26 from 11:00 a.m. - 5 p.m. to help celebrate Ballard's new museum. The design is organized around a linear "fjord" that weaves together stories of homeland and the Nordic American experience. Bridges crossing the fjord intensify the experience of migration, connecting Nordic and Nordic American exhibits.
Along with the core exhibition galleries, active social areas - cafe, store, auditorium and classrooms - will expand the Museum's capabilities and audiences.
