Palo Alto Police Department School Resource Officer Bradley Young will speak about common issues with teenagers (drinking, marijuana, vaping, sexual assault, etc.) and what parents can look out for.  After his presentation we'll be able to ask questions.. Class of 2018 (Seniors) Parent Network Meeting 
This month we'll be discussing what changes in the lives of both parents and children when the children turn 18. Issues include: legal responsibilities as an adult, parents' need to obtain permission to make medical decisions for their adult children, registering for voting and military service, and many others. We'll also discuss changes in the parent/child family dynamic when children become legal adults. 
Our speakers will be Officer Bradley Young (PAPD School Resource Officer) and Cari Anderson (parent of two recent Paly grads and clinical psychologist who works with children, teens and young adults. Cari is also the Paly PTSA's former VP of Health & Wellness).
Please note that this meeting has been rescheduled from our normal meeting date in order to accommodate speakers' schedules.

Palo Alto Parent Education Parents Series kicks off with nationally acclaimed author of " Screenwise " and TED Talk " Raising a Digital Native ," Dr. Devorah Heitner. Parents worry their teens are addicted, detached or distracted because of digital devices. According to Heitner, our concern should go far beyond what kids are doing today. Tech-savvy Digital Natives need mentorship to thrive, develop social skills and succeed in a future where they will likely find a job, meet their spouse and build their reputations. Paly-Jordan Band Concert NEW! 
Thursday, November 15 at 7:30 p.m., Paly PAC
Come to the joint concert by the  Palo Alto High School Symphonic Band,  Concert Band, and the  Jordan 8th Grade Symphonic Band! You will hear the Paly Symphonic Band with movements from Gustav Holst's  Second Suite in F  and the Concert Band with melodies reflecting the landscapes of the Western United States in Pierre LaPlante's  Prairie Songs.  The Jordan Symphonic Band will delight the audience with  As Summer was Just Beginning, a beautiful piece written for James Dean, as well as a fun modern piece with many special effects titled  The Cave You Fear.  The concert will conclude with all three bands performing portions of Mussorgsky's  Pictures at an Exhibition.  


Paly Theatre presents: Heaven Can Wait 
Friday Nov 3 at 7:30pm, Saturday Nov 4 at 7:30pm, Sunday Nov 5 at 2pm, Thursday Nov 9 at 4pm & Saturday Nov 11 at 7:30pm. Performances are at the Palo Alto High School Performing Arts Center, 50 Embarcadero Rd. 
Heaven Can Wait is a romantic comedy and delightful fantasy rolled into one.  The story centers around aspiring boxer, Joe Pendleton.  The young prize fighter is accidentally taken to heaven before his time and then forced to switch bodies in order to live out his destiny back on earth, where he finds true love. You're invited to laugh, sympathize, cheer, and celebrate as murder, ambition and greed meet their match in lighthearted and unexpected ways. Playwright Harry Segall won the Academy Award for Best Writing and Original Story for the 1941 movie adaptation,  Here Comes Mr. Jordan. The 1979 movie remake of Heaven Can Wait, starring Warren Beatty, was nominated for numerous Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Director.  The movie won the Academy Award for Best Production Design. Tickets are $15.00 adults, $10.00 students/seniors. Tea and snacks donations for the Wellness Center 
Our students are very happy when there are tea and snacks available in the Wellness Center! We seek your help in providing decaffeinated tea bags, cocoa, healthy nut free foods, fresh fruit and vegetable trays to support all these activities. If you are interested in donating these items, please drop them off in the Wellness Center, located in the Tower Building, anytime during the school day. College Rep Visits for Seniors (and Juniors, if space is available) 
Students must have their teacher's permission one day in advance if missing class. Pick up a form in the C&CC, or download it at admit-class-form-college-and-career-center . Bring the signed form the day of the visit to ensure the absence from class is cleared and marked as an activity rather than a truancy. College visits scheduled for the next two weeks are listed below. ALL of the Palo Alto PTA Council (CA PTA approved) bills on the Click My Cause app were signed into law by the Governor: 
  • Protected - immigrant students (AB 699). An important step to ensuring no child fears coming to school. School campuses are no places to conduct raids or investigate children.
  • Banned - guns in school zones (AB 424)
  • Fed - school meals for low income students (SB 138). Hungry children can't learn.

Financial Analysis and Management Education (FAME) Investment Conference - Sat., Nov. 4, 8 - 4, SFSU NEW! 
Students from all over the country attend this event each year in order to extract valuable insight from professionals and entrepreneurs from different avenues of Finance including Private Equity, Fixed Income, Global Markets, and Investment Management. Keynote speakers this year are Charles Brandes and Chris Larsen.

Cantabile Chorus Registration and Auditions (Grade K-9)

Play Palooza - The Children's Theatre Ten Minute Playwriting Contest 
Submission Deadline:  Fri, Dec 22 @ 12AM
The Children's Theatre is pleased announce the 2017-18  Play Palooza Ten Minute Playwriting contest .  Play Palooza gives young writers an excellent opportunity to showcase their talents.  Students can submit original work in three categories:  Elementary School (3rd-5th grade), Middle School (6th-8th grade), and High School (9th-12th grade).  Winning plays receive a staged reading at the Children's Theatre, and winning playwrights receive prizes donated by the Friends of the Palo Alto Children's Theatre.  Submissions can be submitted electronically to  christopher.luciani@cityofpaloalto.org

Silicon Valley Boychoir Auditions
Fri, Nov 3, 10, and 17 by appointment, Palo Alto
Auditions for the January semester will be held at the choir's rehearsal location near downtown Palo Alto (600 Homer Ave).  Open to 2nd-5th grade boys.  High school and middle school boys with choral experience may audition for upper levels.  SVB provides a personalized approach to teaching singing, music theory, and sight-reading, while providing flexible scheduling for busy families.  In addition to their own winter and spring concerts, SVB performs for local events including appearances with Stanford University Symphonic Chorus and Orchestra, West Bay Opera, Schola Cantorum of Mountain View, and singing the national anthem at sporting events. 
 
Stanford's Center for Interdisciplinary Brain Sciences Research (CIBSR) Social Skills Study
CIBSR is recruiting for a Social Skills study and is looking for boys aged 8-18 with a developmental or intellectual disability to take part in a research study investigating the effect of behavioral training methods on duration of social gaze. Participation includes a visit to Stanford for 3-4 days, cognitive testing, two optional MRI scans, and social skills training with a behaviorist. Basketball Coaches Needed
The City of Palo Alto is looking for basketball coaches for the 7th and 8th grade season.  Practices are Monday-Thursday, with Friday's being optional.  Practices run for 90 minutes and can fall between the hours of 3:15-7:30pm.  Games for B teams are all played in Palo Alto at our 3 middle schools, while the A teams play games from Palo Alto to Half Moon Bay.  Pay is negotiable depending on experience, and volunteers are strongly encouraged and greatly appreciated.  The City of Palo Alto is looking for coaches who can commit to their practice and game schedule, and who are dedicated to advancing these athletes skills on and off the court.  If you are, or know anybody who would be interested, please email  Patrick.Rode@ CityofPaloAlto.org  to begin the hiring process. 

Festival of Lights: A Diwali Celebration

We'll have music, dancing, henna, crafts and lots more for the whole family to enjoy! Join us at the Rinconada Library on Sunday, October 29 as we celebrate the cultures of our community. Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights celebrated every autumn in the northern hemisphere. This free event starts at 12PM and features a variety of performances and activities that reflect the celebration!

The Palo Alto Unified School District is offering a free series of parent meetings open to all parents and caregivers.  Join Project Cornerstone's engaging workshop - Take It Personally, starting Monday, October 30 th  from 8:05 to 9:35 AM at Hoover Elementary School.  You do not need to be a parent from Hoover, just an adult who cares about all kids.

Whole Foods (downtown Palo Alto) Nickels for Non-Profits

Each time you shop at the Whole Foods Market downtown PA between Oct 15 to Jan 15 and bring in your own bags, Whole Foods will donate 5 cents per bag to our Palo Alto PTA Council.  The PTAC will be able to use these funds for more programs and events for our PAUSD students, staff, and parents!

Paly Math Club's AMC 8 Workshop

This workshop offers individually paced training and one-on-one teaching, with rigorous curriculum taught by former USAMO/USAJMO and AIME qualifiers as well as a math teacher, all from Palo Alto High School.  The AMC 8 is a middle school mathematics competition designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills.  The workshop provides an opportunity for middle school students to develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers.  Students will apply classroom skills to unique problem-solving challenges in a low-stress and friendly environment.
