Active Shooter Training

Join us Sunday, February 18th at 11:15am for Active Shooter Training in the Community Room (106/108).  The training will last roughly 90 minutes and it is open to anyone in the congregation who would like to participate.

Recent tragedies are a reminder to us that there is a real risk of a situation like this happening any place and at any time. The best thing that we can do, for ourselves and our loved ones, is to receive training from experts so that we can react quickly when every second counts.

Our Safety Ministry volunteers have been forming a great working relationship with the  Shelby County Office of Preparedness over the past few months. A member of their team met with Priscilla & Darin Hughes and Tim Flohr to perform a safety assessment of our Church back in December. As an Exploratory Committee, we are gathering all of the resources possible so that we can present our findings to the Church Council in the coming months.

 Please feel free to call Tim Flohr at  (901) 800-7142 if you would like more information.

M ore Than a Meal

"More Than A Meal" Sunday, Feb. 18, 3pm at Grace St. Luke's Episcopal Church - Midtown. Contact Dave or Susie Carlson (351-1453 or 486-9972).

More Than A Meal provides a hot meal and, in addition, provides the dignity of table service, fellowship, and a break from the invisibility that many of our guests live.
Every Sunday, Grace-St. Luke's Episcopal Church invites the homeless and hungry to dine in side-by-side with parishioners and other members of the community. St. Luke Lutheran along with Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church support this ministry the third Sunday of every month by planning, cooking and serving the midtown guests.

Primary goals of this ministry include: getting to know our less fortunate neighbors, so that we may see the Christ in them, and they the Christ in us; acting as instruments of God's love to our community; assisting those suffering from economic hardship; Volunteer Your Time & Talent! Volunteers are always needed and welcomed whether for a single Sunday or on a regular basis. There are many ways to help! Ron Todd, Dave and Susie Carlson need support from the St Luke's Saints to prepare the meal
either on Saturday afternoons or Sunday mornings in our kitchen.
Help is needed in midtown for set up between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m. on Sundays and with serving meals to our guests between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m. This activity is a meaningful way for students to earn community service hours.

LifeBlood - March 4, 9am-1pm

Lifeblood is the Memphis region's only non-profit volunteer blood center, dedicated to meeting the needs of patients, healthcare facilities, medical professionals and the community at large. Every year Lifeblood supplies more than 100,000 units of blood and blood products for local patient transfusion.  The donation process only takes about 1 hour and takes place entirely at St. Luke. Each donation of whole blood can help as many as 3 recipients - all of them our neighbors.    A sign-up sheet will be located on the bulletin board outside the office. Alternatively, you can sign up and complete your health questionnaire in advance at  clublifeblood.org .

LifeBlood is in greater need than usual at the moment.
If you cannot make the drive on March 4th, please try to donate individually (you can still list St. Luke as your sponsor!).    Please contact Jon Klein ( [email protected]  574-250-2597  ), the St. Luke Lifeblood Coordinator, with any questions.

Sunday Synopsis - Feb. 11

We have a great opportunity to learn about our safety in our church facility, next Sunday. The Sheriff's department will tour our facility and speak to us about being safe during activities at St. Luke. Please plan to stay next Sunday, for a little while, after the service.
Beautiful Music! This Sunday was a treat, with Nancy Lendman playing "What A Wonderful World" on the harp. Then we were roused with Maggie and John Carkeet and Luke and Madeline Wright's version of "In The End." What great talent we have here! Bless all who share with us!

We will be sharing our Lenten offering with Heifer International. This organization donates animals, water purifiers, etc. to people all around the world who are in need. A family will be given a cow, and when that cow has a calf, that will be passed on to another family in need. God provides so we can feed the world.

Cliff Notes: On this Transfiguration Sunday, we were given a glimpse of heaven, a spark of hope, before the season of Lent begins. Jesus shines as divine, accompanied by the two greatest prophets, Moses and Elijah. The voice of God defines Jesus and tells us to listen to Him. We are to listen and follow; from our will to God's will. This is not easy! In order to be first, we must be last, a servant. Let us stand in awe, listen, believe, serve, and be generous, as God is generous with us.

OVER 70-1/2?
Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD's) have been permanently extended to individuals 70-1/2 and over. These are direct contributions from a qualified IRA (traditional or Roth) to a qualified charity (St. Luke). They do not first go to the owner of the IRA, but instead go directly to the charity from the IRA trustee or custodian. So what are the advantages?
QCDs are included in meeting the test of Required Minimum Distributions (RMD's) from your IRA upon reaching 70-1/2 years of age;
deductibility limits do not apply to QCDs up to a maximum of $100,000;
If you do not itemize you could possibly still get a tax deduction for charitable contributions through lower income assuming that you would otherwise withdraw your charitable contribution from your IRA;
If you pay taxes on a portion of your Social Security, QCDs may reduce reported income below the RMD. This may also help in cases where you are subject to tax on Net Investment Income, or phase-out of personal exemptions or itemized deductions.
If you feel that this is something that would be of advantage to you, talk to your tax advisor. QCD's only became permanent this year so a lot of folks are not familiar with the new law.
