"The time has come for peace in Iraq."
~ Video for UN HABITAT/UNICEF 2018

Hopefully, Lent provides us among other things a jolt. A jolt out of habit. A jolt of need. A jolt of awareness that opens a new more vivid experience of God. Perhaps a jolt of conscience or compassion. I just received the short video below from my good friend and SWIC collaborator Sinan, who lives in Baghdad and works with Fr. Faiz at St. George's Church- one of our primary partners there. It was made by a friend of his working for UN HABITAT/UNICEF. This short video sums up beautifully what our mission to Iraq and its people is all about. Creating new possibilities of hope, reconciliation and peace in a land torn apart largely by the greed, violence and indifference of the Western world. As the video expresses: "They need assistance, they deserve assistance." In the coming weeks we will be bringing you up to date on this amazing mission and how together we can move forward with our sisters and brothers toward Easter and beyond.

Bible & Beer
TONIGHT!

We will gather tonight, Thursday, February 15th at 7PM for informal (non-political) discussions of how faithful people can interact with the world: how our view of the Gospel impacts our views of people and the challenges of our time, and how events also shape our faith.

We will meet at Pietro's Pizza at 236 N. Radnor-Chester Road- only 1 mile from the church! Parking is plentiful around this new, reasonably priced bar/restaurant.

To get there from the church, follow King of Prussia Road south toward the train station, bearing right after going under the tracks onto Radnor-Chester Road toward Route 30. The entrance to the restaurant parking area is on the right, just across from the Radnor High School athletic field. Go in the side entrance and turn right. Come, share from your heart, and bring a friend!

Lenten Outreach Soup Cook
THIS SATURDAY!

We will once again prepare homemade soup for the clients of The Great Valley Food Cupboard during Lent.  Please join us at our first Group Cook at Bolingbroke this Saturday, February 17th from 1:00pm until 4:00pm.  If you can't make it or would prefer to cook individually at home, sign up in the Gurley Room.  Containers and instructions will be provided. Cupboard clients are already asking "Will there be soup this year?", let's respond with a resounding YES! If you have any questions, please contact Pam Faber.

Sunday School

Over the next six weeks our Sunday School classes will focus on Lent. This is a time to reflect on Christ's teaching as well as prepare for Holy Week and Easter. The forty days of Lent are a journey extending from Ash Wednesday through Holy Saturday (but omit the seven Sundays.) The children and youth will continue to interpret New Testament bible stories, assist with outreach, and learn more about the Last Supper. Classes will begin each Sunday at 9:30 a.m. and the nursery will continue to be open weekly. Adults are welcome to join the children on this Lenten path. Contact Ms. Deb ( [email protected]) if you would like to participate.

The nursery will be open this Sunday starting at 9:30 a.m.

Lent Madness

Lent Madness begins TODAY! It is not too late to make your vote count. Go to Lentmadness.org and sign up. What is Lent Madness? Like March Madness, it is a chance to see your favorites progress in the standings. The Episcopal Church provides you (via email) with enlightening information on each holy man or woman, and you will help make a decision on who moves to the Round of the Saintly Sixteen, to the Elate Eight, and to the Faithful Four. Ultimately the award is the coveted Golden Halo. Pick up your own copy of the Lent Madness chart to track the winners and losers. We will also keep track of the competition on the chart downstairs in the hall, across from the Education Bulletin Board. Sign up now and participate!

Pilgrim's Prayer

As a child I learned to give something up for Lent: chocolate, or a favorite toy, or TV time. In my adult years I tended to take on something that would use more of my precious time. Maybe volunteering, or teaching a Lenten series at church, or adding prayer practices. With Ash Wednesday immediately behind us, I now think about simplifying my life. I will continue to "downsize." At the same time, I am going to take on more joy and more hope. This will be a daily practice to break negative habits. The world is full of darkness so Christ as the light beckons me. I start this Lenten journey by sharing one of the prayers from the "The Pilgrims Way" Website. And PS: I'm still keeping it simple and am going to give up chocolate, too.

Lord, you know our beginning and our end.
Help us to realize we are only pilgrims on this earth and save us from being too attached to worldly possessions.
May we experience the freedom to wander, the freedom to hope, and the freedom to love as we journey.
Amen.

Read and Ponder
this Week's Scriptures

The scripture readings for this Sunday are:

Genesis 9:8-17
Psalm 25:1-9
1 Peter 3:18-22
Mark 1:9-15

The Collect
Almighty God, whose blessed Son was led by the Spirit to be tempted by Satan: Come quickly to help us who are assaulted by many temptations; and, as you know the weaknesses of each of us, let each one find you mighty to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Old Testament
Genesis 9:8-17

God said to Noah and to his sons with him, "As for me, I am establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you, and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the domestic animals, and every animal of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark. I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth." God said, "This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth." God said to Noah, "This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth."

The Response
Psalm 25:1-9

1 To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul; my God, I put my trust in you; let me not be humiliated, nor let my enemies triumph over me.
2 Let none who look to you be put to shame; let the treacherous be disappointed in their schemes.
3 Show me your ways, O Lord, and teach me your paths.
4 Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; in you have I trusted all the day long.
5 Remember, O Lord, your compassion and love, for they are from everlasting.
6 Remember not the sins of my youth and my transgressions; remember me according to your love and for the sake of your goodness, O Lord.
7 Gracious and upright is the Lord; therefore he teaches sinners in his way.
8 He guides the humble in doing right and teaches his way to the lowly.
9 All the paths of the Lord are love and faithfulness to those who keep his covenant and his testimonies.

The Epistle
1 Peter 3:18-22

Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, in which also he went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison, who in former times did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were saved through water. And baptism, which this prefigured, now saves you-- not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him.

The Gospel
Mark 1:9-15

In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased." And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him. Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news."

Optional parts of the readings are set off in square brackets.
The Bible texts of the Old Testament, Epistle and Gospel lessons are from the New Revised Standard Version Bible, copyright 1989 by the Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Church of Christ in the USA, and used by permission.
The Collects, Psalms and Canticles are from the Book of Common Prayer, 1979.
